N. Janes, living a mile and a half east of Atalissa on the Fred Kaufman farm, died in a hospital at Iowa City about 10:30 oclock Monday night, within a few minutes after his arrival there. The boy had been ill for the past two weeks of flu-pneumonia and had been treated at home. His mother had been heating water jugs in the oven of the stove in an effort to keep him warm. Monday evening two jugs were placed in the oven, but other duties claimed the attention of Mrs. Janes, and they had become overheated and as they were removed both jugs exploded. Mrs. Janes was seriously scalded about the face, shoulders, arms and legs by the boiling water, and fragments from the jug pierced her face, cutting a number of deep incisions. Nine stitches were required to close the wounds. This morning Mrs. Janes was suffering considerably, but it is believed she is in no danger. It was following this accident that it was decided to rush the boy to the hospital. He was given oxygen treatment, but failed to rally. A younger brother, Keith Janes, was taken to the hospital a week ago, suffering from an attack of flu-pneumonia. He was reported improving this morning. Muscatine Journal & News Tribune, Thursday January 10, 1929 pg 10 Atalissa, Ia., Jan. 10 - Funeral services for Forest Lemar Janes, the 14-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Janes, who died in the university hospital at Iowa City a few minutes after he was rushed to that institution, will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 oclock in the Musserville Methodist church in Muscatine. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Victor Bloomquist. He was born in Grandview Jan. 18, 1914, where the family lived until he was five years of age. They then moved to Muscatine, where they made their home until last September, when they moved to a farm near this city. He was taken ill with flu which developed into pneumonia. He was cared for at the home until an explosion of water jugs seriously scalded his mother, making home care impossible. He was rushed to Iowa City, but lived only a short time. He was a member of the freshman class of the Atalissa high school and is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Janes; two sisters, Garnet and Thora and two brothers Noral and Emory
Thanks for thinking of me, but my only Cook was a Margaret born in England (no parents known) about 1740, she married a Stephen Haight in the 1760's and the family ended up with a Fletcher Matthias Haight grand child of Margaret Cook Haight who was born in New York and died in San Francisco, looks like going for gold time 1866, and a wife who died in 1827 in New York. Way out of line, I would think.. Hope you find someone close to the Cook family.Joan Luetzowjoanluetzow@sbcglobal.net On Friday, March 10, 2017 9:40 AM, Shelley Cardiel <cardiels@comcast.net> wrote: I've "rescued" an old photograph of William J. Armbright, was born in Stowe, Lamoile county, Vermont, March 19, 1851. At the time of her death she was sixty-nine years and five days of age. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Columbus Junction, Iowa, and in the fellowship of the church she was happy. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Russell. October 25, 1867, at the age of sixteen years, she was married to Charles Agustus Armbright, who was a close soldier friend of her only brother, Henry H. Russell. Seven children were born to this union, six of whom survive their mother. They are, Mrs. Elizabeth Mattert of Sibley, Iowa; Henry H. Armbright of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Bertha Davis of West Branch, Iowa; Paul L. Armbright of Peoria, Ill.; Mrs. Orleana Hafner of Letts, Iowa; and Mrs. Marie L. Nash of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After a lingering illness, Mr. Armbright passed away one year and eight months ago. Mrs. Armbright came last fall to spend the winter with her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Davis. Although there were evidences of declining health ever since the death of her husband, Mrs. Armbright was able to be about until the first of January, when she was taken ill with diabetis, from which she has been a constant but patient sufferer. Her trust has been in her Christ and her prayers were that she might recover and stay a little longer with her loved ones. She was a kind and loving mother and numbers many among her friends and acquaintances. The morning of March 24, 1920, she fell quietly asleep and passed into her eternal rest. She will always be remembered as one of those who passed through great tribulations and had the victory of faith. Besides her children, she leaves eleven grandchildren and a host of people who have known her as a neighbor and a friend. She was a member of the W. R. C. of Columbus Junction, Iowa. A short service was held at the Davis home Wednesday afternoon, March 24, at five o'clock. Rev. W. G. Rowley of the Methodist church read the seventy-first Psalm to comfort those who mourned because it had often comforted this one who had lived. To this union six children were born, of who the following survive: Mrs. Mannon, East View, Mo.; Mrs. Aurelia Burkoe, Mackintosh, Minn.; J. E. McKelvey, Kansas City, Kan.; S. B. The family hold the father in loving remembrance. The aged wife patiently awaits the Masters call to join the loved ones who have preceded her. The family extends their sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors who ministered to their necessities in their time of sorrow. I was a stranger and ye took me in.
