He was born October 6, 1919 in Louisa County, Iowa, the son of Paul and Marian Stineman Kemp. He married Lila M. Downs on November 3, 1948 at New Orleans, Louisiana. Mr. Kemp was an Army veteran of WW II having served in the European Theatre. He was recalled from the active reserves in 1948. His service took him to Germany, Korea, Japan, Panama, Puerto Rico, and various locations in the states. He retired as Lt. Col. Neal R. Kemp in 1966 with 26 years of military service. Following his military retirement Mr. Kemp served as the Justice of the Peace in Wapello and later as Magistrate Judge of Louisa County. He also owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Wapello for several years, and most recently had worked for Tillmann Ford Motors. He was a member of the 3 Rail Billiard Club at Wapello. He was of the Methodist Faith. A native of Kirkville, IA, Richard was employed by the American Medical Association in Chicago since 1970. In 1988, he became Director of the Masterfile Information Department, and AMA division that maintains information on the physicians across the country. He relinquished that post in 1991 because of his eroding communication skills. Richard continued to work despite his illness at the AMA until his death. As his physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital states: Richard was an inspiration and role model to many people in demonstrating courage and determination while constantly battling cancer for 11 years. Richard received a BA from the University of Iowa in 1967 and earned an MBA from Loyola University of Chicago in 1983. He was member of the American Statistical Association and Omicron Delta Epsilon and International Honor Society of Economics. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Faye and Glen Odem of Ottumwa, IA, and mother-in-law, Joan H. Winter of Wapello, IA. Survivors include Robin, his wife; brother Daniel and family of Iowa City, IA, and sister, Nancy and family, of Portland, OR, and his many friends whose lives have been enriched by knowing him. A Memorial Service for Richard was held August 27, 1995 at the Newberry Library in Chicago with Rev. Mary N. Pugh, Wapello Presbyterian Church, presiding. Interment of the ashes will be Saturday, October 14, 1995 at 1 p.m. at the Wapello Cemetery with Rev. Pugh officiating. Music will be provided by Angela Odem, Iowa City, and Millicent Lou Bunker, Hastings, MN. Donations may be made to the Odem Memorial for cancer research at the Lurie Cancer Center, 710 N. RUBLE Robert Gene Ruble, age 65, of Wapello, Iowa, died Thursday evening, February 11, 1993 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Iowa City. He was born March 31, 1927 at Wapello, the son of James and Minnie Ament Ruble. He was a veteran of the US Army during WW II and then later served in the US Navy. He had worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant at Middlestown, Iowa. He also worked several years for Clarence Keltner and then several years for the Wapello Livestock Sales. He was a member of the Harness Racing Association and for a time he trained horses at the Quad City Downs. He had been a member of the Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166. Survivors include two brothers, William Ruble of Morning Sun and Tom Ruble of Winona, Minnesota; three sisters, Bessie Johnson of Columbus, Georgia, Mary Sue (Mrs. Allen) Woods of Washington, and Catherine Ruble of Wapello; one uncle, Raymond Ament of Herford, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James; and a sister, Lola Haislett. The funeral service for Robert Ruble was held at 1:30 on Monday, February 15, 1993 at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, with Rev. Ed Philgreen officiating. Bev Parsons provided the organ music. The casket bearers were Lyle Gillette, Mike Schneider, Roger Noble, Kermit Kinsley, Anthony Knight, and Harry Westfall. Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166. The family met with friends Sunday afternoon at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home. Sheriff Robert Lewis and Dr. J. H. Chittum, Louisa county coroner, investigated the case, pronounced the death a suicide, and stated no inquest would be held. The body was discovered about 6:30 by the driver of an Iowa Farm (?) Delivery truck. Griffith's family told investigators he left his residence about 6 o'clock, presumably to milk. He drove from his home, which is located at the southwest edge of Morning Sun, to the highway, where he turned his car around, heading it back towards town. He then apparently climbed out and fired the fatal shot. Sheriff Lewis said the suicide was without apparent motivation. The son of William and Mary Jane Greer Griffith, Griffith was born at Seaton, Ill., on June 25, 1885. He was married to Ella Stevens on March 20, 1910. After service as rural mail carrier for 36 years, Griffith retired in 1945. Surviving are the widow, 2 sons and 3 daughters: George and Robert Griffith, both of Morning Sun, and Mrs. James Holdinghouse, of St. Louis, and Mrs. Kyle Wilson and Helen Griffith, both of Morning Sun. Also surviving are 3 brothers: Milton and Albert Griffith, both of Seaton, and Omer Griffith, of Placerville, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Bessit Lingafelter, of Joy, Ill. There are 3 grandchildren. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and then taught in several rural schools near Marengo, Shellsburg, and Vining, Iowa before coming to Grandview where she taught kindergarten before she met and married Daniel Frederick Gast on May 14, 1938 at Muscatine, Iowa. She later spent many years teaching piano. She was active in the Grandview assembly of gospel fellowship throughout her life. Survivors include her husband, Dan; one daughter, Claudia Mae Gast of Davenport; two sons, Jerry Leon Gast of Wapello and Garth Frederick Gast of Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Clayton Lee, Daniel James, and Timothy Joseph Gast, Lynette Marie Hoopes, Jennifer Lyn Spurrell, Trista Kay Noah, and Rebecca Josephine Gast; and two brothers, Russell and Ray Shedenhelm both of Cedar Rapids.
