JOHN MCGILL DIES AFTER ONE YEAR OF INTENCE SUFFERING Resident of This City for Five Years - Fuenral Service to Be Held in Grandview. Having suffered intensely for more than a year from a complication of diseases, Mrs. Elizabeth Erwin McGill, wife of John McGill, died at the family residence, 108 Madison street, yesterday afternoon shortly before 5 o'clock. All hopes for her recovery had been given up some time ago, while death, because of the suffering incident to the disease with which she was afflicted, was welcomed by the deceased. Mrs. McGill was 57 years old. She was married to John McGill in Louisa county in 1879, where the family made their home until about five years ago when they came to Muscatine. Of the seven children of Mrs. McGill, five preceded her in death. Those of the immediate family to survive her are her husband, one son, Lee McGill of Bloomington township, and one daughter, Miss Nellie McGill, residing at home. The funeral service will be held from the church at Grandview on Friday at 12:15 o'clock in the afternoon, where interment will be made in the cemetery of that place. Source: LCHS scrapbook

The Louisa County Sheriff’s Department said David Austin Korn died while sitting in a car parked in a closed garage. The incident was reported to the sheriff’s department at 4:58 p.m. Officials have not ruled the death a suicide. Louisa County Coroner Dr. Robert Carlton was not available this morning. His telephone answering machine indicates he is on vacation and refers emergency calls to Burlington Medical Center. David Korn David Austin Korn, 37, of rural Wapello, died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 8, 1990, at his home. Born July 30, 1953, in Burlington, he was the son of John R. and Ida Mae Adams Korn. He farmed the past three years with his parents and before that worked at Bandag Corp., Muscatine, and a medical supply company in Des Moines. He was graduated in 1971 from Wapello High School. Mr. Korn is survived by his parents; a brother, Brian Korn, Dallas, Ga.; and two step-nieces. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello. Born July 19, 1914, in Yarmouth, he was the son of Chlode and Ruby Holsteen Oberman. He married Mary Griffin Feb. 20, 1960, in Oquawka, Ill. He was a 1934 graduate of Yarmouth High School. Mr. Oberman owned and operated Oberman Trucking Lines in Danville until 1959. He was employed with the Morrison Knutson Company connected with the Minuteman Missile Program in Aurora, Colo., and the Defense Warehouse in Santa Maria and Modesto, Calif. He moved back to this area and was the service manager at the Ford Motor Company. He later moved to Wapello and ran the Shell Station for 10 years, moving back to Burlington and retiring in 1981. He was a Methodist and was a member of the Danville Masonic Lodge No. 48, A.F. & A.M., the Kaaba Shrine, the Eagles, the Moose Lodge and the Humane Society. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Minnie Ann Frazer of New River, Ariz., and Janet Kolkman of Danville; two sons, Jerry Oberman of Golden, Colo., and Ronald Oberman of Somerset, Ky.; his mother of Morning Sun; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel. Masonic rites and a memorial service for Mr. Oberman will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Wesley Lawrence officiating. The body has been cremated. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery. Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Born May 31, 1914, in Chicago, Howard was the son of Trygve and Harriet Jacobsen Pedersen. He was a graduate of New Trier High School, Winnetka, Illinois, and Bryant-Stratton Business College, Chicago. He married Jocelyn McRoberts on June 11, 1945, in San Diego, California. Pat enjoyed bridge, reading, contesting, and was a life-long fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Felix (Rebecca) Hoover, River Grove, Illinois; and Carol Pedersen, Altoona; and a sister, Mrs. LaVergne Anderson, Eureka, California. He worked for Stanley Consultants in Muscatine, retiring in 1980. During World War II he served in the Navy. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and had served as a trustee. He had been secretary for the Louisa County Fair Board. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Roger, who was killed in World War II. He had worked on a river dredge and also the construction of the Keokuk dam and the farmed before he worked and retired from Murray Iron Works at Burlington as a machinist. He was of the Presbyterian faith and had belonged to the Operating Engineers Union. Survivors include his wife, Nellie; three daughters, Darlene Venard, Mary Watson, and Sue Martin, all of Burlington; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Harry Venard of Zephyr Hills, Florida; a step-sister, Marjorie Mellinger of Yuma, Arizona; a step-brother, Robert Johnson of West Covina, California; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Opal Venard; three half-brothers, Pat, Perry, and Charles Venard; and two step-brothers, Kenneth and Ross Johnson. Graveside rites were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 1994 at the Wapello Cemetery with Rev. Jerry D. Brown officiating. MOHNSSEN Funeral services for 88 year old Rose Evelyn Mohnssen, of Columbus Junction were held on Friday, May 6, 1994 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa. Rose died on Tuesday, May 3, 1994 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa after a short illness. Visitation was held Thursday with the family present from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for the United Methodist Church. Burial was at the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine. Rose Evelyn Trautman was born January 14, 1906 at Nichols, Iowa to Willis & Helen Book Trautman. She married Peter Jacob Mohnssen March 29, 1925 in Muscatine, Iowa. Peter preceded Rose in death on March 29, 1971. She was a homemaker and a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Rose was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Old Clifton Club. Survivors included: a son, Walther Jack Mohnssen, Letts and a daughter, Mrs. Royal (June) Jennings, Winfield, Iowa. There are eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-step-grandchild. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, three grandsons, three brothers and four sisters. Rev. Walden Paige of Columbus Junction United Methodist Church officiated at the services. Donna Belle Hughes was organist. Honorary Casket Bearers were: Annette Scieszinski, Cynthisa Phillips, Barbara Buck, Linda Mohnssen, Patricia Mohnssen, Sheree Garner, Rich Garner and Alan Buck. Case for 15 years and an independent truck driver for the Rock Quarry near Kingston. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Burlington; four sons, Daryl, James, Melvin, all of Burlington, and Larry, Tucson, Ariz.; 2 daughters, Linda Sue Smith and Donna Heland, Burlington; step-daughter Audrey Klinkerman, Denver, Colo.; a brother, Robert Ashby, Burlington; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Services were Friday, May 6, 1994 at 1:30 p.m. at Lunning Chapel with Chaplain Shirley Bliven officiating. Burial at Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established. FLETCHER Lucy Pauline Fletcher, 85, of the Bethesda Care Center, Mediapolis, died at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 1994, at Burlington Medical Center. Born June 1, 1908, in Columbus City, she was the daughter of Clyde and Bessie Hanft. On Aug. 11, 1929, she married Harlan Fletcher in Columbus City. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Fletcher was a homemaker. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Dean of Mediapolis and Linda Fletcher of Kansas; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Helen Snyder of Columbus Junction, Dorothy Hanft of California, Marion Kulp of Burlington and Mildred Nischwetz of Muscatine. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a son. Mrs. Fletcher has been cremated. There will be no memorial service.
