Born June 28, 1928, in Muscatine, he was the son of George and Dorothy Pettis Blake. Mr. Blake was a truck driver. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. Survivors include one brother, George Blake of Burlington; one sister, Nancy Blaylock of Donnelson, Ill.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Visitation will be from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Prugh’s Chapel. The funeral for Mr. Blake will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh’s Chapel, with the Rev. William Trump officiating. A general memorial has been established. Mrs. Wykert was born Jan. 31, 1900, the daughter of William and Mary Marshall McConahay at Carroll, Iowa. On Sept. 25, 1923, she married H. Russell Wykert at Wapello. He died on July 30, 1986. She was a member of the Columbus City United Methodist Church and had been a homemaker. She is survived by her two sisters-in-law; Opal McConahay, and Margaret (Peg) McConahay, both of Columbus City. She was preceded in death by three brothers and her husband. He attended the University of Illinois and Bradley University and was the first Chinese Eagle Scout in Illinois. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during Word War II. He was past commander of Post 1115 in Sprinbay, Ill., and a member of Muscatine Rotary Club, Iowa Lodge No. 2, AF&AM, Eastern Star, Elks Lodge No. 304, the Iowa Restaurant Association, and the Hotel-Motel Association of Iowa. She had worked several years at Thatcher Glass of Muscatine. She was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed her family and playing bingo. He was past chief of the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department and was a 50-year member of the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Lewis was of the Methodist faith. Funeral service was held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with Rev. George Yetter officiating. Phyllis McCulley was the organist. Casket bearers were Bill Breuer, Elmer Bergquist, Fred Brown and Dick Murray. Flower attendants were Stella Wilson and Henrietta Bergquist. ROBERT STANTON BELL Dr. Robert Stanton Bell, 72, of 116 Orchard Place, died at 3:10 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Burlington Medical Center. He was born Sept. 26, 1913, in Keokuk County, to Frank and Bertha Jo Wickersham Bell. He married Bessie Evelyn Soucek on July 26, 1938, in Minneapolis, Minn. Dr. Bell graduated from medical school at the University of Iowa in 1939 followed by a year of internship at St. Mary Hospital in Madison, Wis. He was on active duty as a medical officer in the Army Air Corps from July 1940 to August 1945. After World War II, he returned to Iowa City for a residency in radiology. He came to Burlington in December 1948 to be the first Board Certified Radiologist of Mercy and Burlington Hospitals and practiced until he retired from the Radiology Department of Burlington Medical Center in 1983. Dr. Bell was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees during the time the sanctuary was extensively remodeled and the stained glass window behind the altar uncovered. He was involved in community affairs including Burlington Community School Board, Area 16 Community College Board, City Plan Commission, Board of Adjustment, Past President of Des Moines County Medical Society and Hospital Staff, chairman of the Building and Planning Committee of Burlington Medical Center during the last major building program. Past president of Iowa Radiologic Society, member of Rocky Mountain Radiology Society and member of American College of Radiology. He was also a member of the board of United Way. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Barbara (Samuel) Bell-Abt, Paris, France, Mrs. Karen (Fred) Horner, Waco, Texas, and Mrs. Deborah (Mark) Blaedel, DeRidder, La.; two sons, Robert C., Betterdorf, and Thomas G., Long Beach, N.Y.; one brother, John, Black Mountain, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Foster, Sheffield, Mrs. Frances Mezger, Scottsdale, Ariz., Mrs. Margaret (Raymond) Koester, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and three grandchildren. The daughter of Orpha Edith Maddux Lang and Charles Paul Lang, she was born in Wapello on April 12, 1911. She had recently been employed as a waitress in the Capitol café in Wapello. She was a member of the Wapello Methodist church and the Royal Neighbors of America lodge. Surviving are four sons, Charles Allen and Robert Dean of Rock Island; Neil Duane, in the U.S. Army; and Walter Chester, of Wapello; one daughter, Mrs. Janet Bozarth of Yarmouth, Ia.; and two grandchildren. A daughter, Delores, preceded her in death. The body is at the Dudgeon Funeral home where it will remain for the services Thursday. The Rev. L. E. Visitation is today at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home. Loren Jackson was born July 15, 1933 in Grandview, the son of Fay and Vera Walker Jackson. He was a life resident of the Wapello area and was a 1952 graduate of the Grandview High School. His marriage to Valeen Schaper took place Dec. 27, 1955 in Wapello. He had been in the U.S. Air Force and had served in the Korean War. He had farmed and had also worked for 17 years at the I.A.A. P. in Burlington. The son of Emery Bailey and Ophelia McCulley Simmons, he was born May 5, 1903 at Huntington, Tennessee. He married Elsie E. Grubber on November 23, 1932 at Dubuque. She died August 31, 1974. He married Frances Boling on December 18, 1979 at Morning Sun. He was a farmer in the Morning Sun area and had previously operated a service station in West Liberty and also in Dubuque. He was of the Protestant faith. He thoroughly enjoyed big band music and dancing and also enjoyed reading. Survivors include his wife, Frances; two sons, Charles and Betty Simmons of Morning Sun and Allen of Sarasota, Florida; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Elsie; a brother, Ezra; five sisters, Ruth, Macey, Grace, Ruby and Lucy; and a granddaughter, Jill. The funeral service for Ben Simmons was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 1996, at the United Methodist Church at Morning Sun, with Rev. Chris Ebbers officiating. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun. Friends called on Sunday with the family meeting friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, Morning Sun. A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Morning Sun Community Ambulance Service. Burial will be in the Conesville Cemetery, Conesville, Iowa. Fred died on Monday, March 18, in Muscatine. Visitation was held on Wednesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home. A memorial has been established at the funeral home. Fred Alvero Criss was born January 23, 1907 in Conesville, Iowa to William and Minnie Nolind Criss. He married Marjorie E. Mincer December 7, 1946 in Muscatine, Iowa. Fred was a meatcutter and had worked at the Airport Supermarket near Conesville. Fred also farmed most of his life in the Conesville area. Fred is survived by two sons, Rick Criss of Charles City, Iowa and Randy Criss of Battle Creek, Michigan. There are six grandchildren, Zach, Marjorie, Heather, Crystal, Danyelle, Jim and Holly.
