    2. Kathy Scott
    3. Keith, Pardon my delay, I don't think I ever thanked you for this last message full of information. There's some valuable things here for me. Thank you, Kathy ---------- From: Keith/Connie Street[SMTP:ckcasey@lisco.net] Sent: Saturday, March 14, 1998 2:41 AM To: Kathy Scott; 'IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com' Subject: Re: Osborn Dear Kathy I'll add a little again, and answer some of your questions. Lydia Ann would not be listed if there were no gravestone with her name on it. Your John O/Q may have died in Webster County, Nebraska. There were several trains a day running out of Louisa County in 1899; his body could have been easily returned here. That was a common practice then. Clara Dodder has a grave marker in Grandview Cemetery. Dates are 1861-1935. There are no other Osborne, Gould or Quick listings in the cemetery book. There are four Gould females married in Louisa County prior to 1900 and no males. The women were:Eliza Ann Gould to Edward Colton on 4 March 1866 (Book C Page 88); Maria A. Gould to Ellis R. Duncan on 20 November 1873 (Book D Page 363); Nellie A. Gould to John H. Sellers on 20 August 1890 (Book G Page 267); Ella Amelia Gould to Charles Henry Hetrick on 29 November 1898 (Book I Page 9). An obituary for your Elijah Osborne is in the Wapello Tribune of Friday, February 1, 1901. The community area heading is Sand Mound, which is in the northern part of Louisa County. He had been born in Buttsville, Warren County, New Jersey, on November 8, 1832, and died aged 68 years 2 months and 18 days on January 26, 1901. He was unmarried and left one sister and a brother in New York; a sister in New Jersey; and a sister in Nebraska. Rev. Fouse of Columbus Junction conducted the services and burial was at Swank Cemetery. Swank Cemetery is over 20 miles from Grandview, and is located in Johnson County. Hope this helps. Keith Street ---------- > From: Kathy Scott <kscott@kdsi.net> > To: 'Keith/Connie Street' <ckcasey@lisco.net>; 'IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com' > Keith - Thank you! > This was both helpful and surprising. I knew about what ages Sarah & Alice died, but not exact dates. Infant Lydia Ann should have been buried there, also. Is it possible she didn't have a stone therefore was not in the cemetery listing? The surprise was I thought John Q. died in Webster Co. NE. Clara Dodder should be buried in Grandview Cem ca 1935? Can you tell me if you see any other Osborn(e), Gould or Quick? John Q's brother, Elijah, a jewelry salesman, was supposed to be buried in Swank Cemetery at Grandview in 1901. Is Swank the same as Grandview Cemetery?

    1. re:Silbaugh's
    2. Norma F. Jennings
    3. Boy, do I have egg on my face. Recently, I forwarded a query on the Silbaughs to the Louisa County list as I did not recognize the name. I later checked it out and found it is in my own database. Although I did not research that branch of the family, a third cousin of my husband's, a descendant of Enoch Jennings had sent me her family history and that is where the Silbaugh name entered in. When the Jennings Family came West from Ohio and Pennsylvania in 1854, they travelled in a wagon caravan with the Mifflin Jeffries Family which settled in Louisa County, Iowa. Benjamin, Henry, and Elijah Jennings were in that group. However, two brothers Enoch and Jared separated from the caravan in Illinois and travelled north to Wisconsin where they bought land and raised their families. Enoch's daughter Elizabeth married William Bush Silbaugh, the son of William Silbaugh for whom more information was needed. My records, of course, had stopped with William Silbaugh since this is a more remote branch of the family. As my mother used to say, someone threw a rock over the fence into a neighbor's yard. Elizabeth Jennings Silbaugh therefore does have relatives in Louisa County, but none of the Silbaugh's ever lived here. Mystery solved. Norma

    3. I am working on the Buffington Family from Louisa County. My greatgrandmother was Clara Bell BUFFINGTON. Delilah LUNBECK was her mother. Does anyone know who her parents were. Also Clara Bell was married to John A. HOUSEAL. I have that he was from Penn. Does anyone know where in Penn and who his parents were. My mother was Grace Lorene Leffler. Her father was George Leffler m. to Nellie Katherine Houseal. My mother was adopted out of the family, so I have limited information on my mother's brothers and sisters. 3. I'd be interested in finding out more, too. I have several photographs taken in the Davenport area around the turn of the century. I, on the other hand, have most of the names of the people in the pictures. I just wonder if the businesses exist still, or if they have passed on their equipment, negatives, etcetera to businesses currently operating. What can we learn? 2. Rita Hallett
    3. I have come in possession of a photo album belong to my GGrandfather's brother, Milton Oliver Griswold. It is full of studio pictures from IA & NE, supposedly of his family, but no names on any of the pictures. I was wondering if someone out there could guide me as to finding out when these studios were in business so I could at least date the pictures. Two in particular was taken by the Photographic Studio of Thomas V Gibboney in Columbus Junction, IA. I beleive these may be my GGGrandparents, but could tell more if I knew dates. Several are by Huebingers' located at 119 W. 2nd Street, Davenport, IA. There are some wedding photos taken by Malaur, Eagle Gallery in Des Moines, IA. There is one of a young woman taken by Bruetts of Davenport, IA. Quite a few of them were taken by Jno. Buell of Geneseo, IL. (I don't know where this is, so if anyone out there knows where Geneseo, IL is, please let me know & I will submit a query there as well.) There is a photo of two teenage (?) girls taken by Haynew' Palace Studio Car - Northern Pacific Railroad, branch studio, Yellowstone Park. One photo says Hostetty 1918 on the front side of the photo, with no location. Some are by Hakelier, Vienna Studio in Rock Island, IL. There are at least 50 photos in all. If anyone can give me any leads, there are other studios in the area on some of the photos & I can give a complete list if you need. Any help in dating these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rita ritah@edumaster.com

    3. Dear Connie, If you have a couple of the same pictures, that should be proof we're on the same family! Did you have the picture of your grandmother with her grandmother? I'm sending, through the U. S. Postal Service, copies of the other pictures, and hope you can identify some of them. I'll number them, so through email we'll both know what pictures we are referring to. 3. Dear Rick I don't find much on your McSweeney family. There were no McSweeney marriages in Louisa County prior to 1900. There was a Lillian Sweeny marriage and ones for J. D. Sweeny, John L.Sweeny, Samuel W. Sweeny and David M. Sweeney. The only McSweeney burials in the county are in Columbus City Cemetery. They are for Edward W. and his wife Ella. Edward's dates are 1844 to 1888; Ella's are 1853 to 1939. Ella and Edward are listed as parents of Helen and Florence Orcutt. There is an Elmer and Eleanor Sweany buried in Columbus City Cemetery. The only McSweeney listing in either the Springer History or the Portrait and Biographical Album of Louisa County is a Catherine McSweeney who married a James Colton. There are some Sweeney and Sweney entries that I did not look up. I didn't check any land records in the courthouse. 3. Keith, Good to see you're online now! Did you finished updating the Buffington database that you were soliciting info on last Fall? I snail-mailed you a packet and heard from my Aunt Jean (Allen) that you had copied her with the preliminary f\data. Thanks for doing that and for all your efforts. Anxious to see the final result. 3. The Grandview Cemetery is on-line thanks to Greg Arihood and Susie Martin-Rott. The link to the Grandview Cemetery is on the Louisa County cemetery index page, but Susie also has several other neighboring cemeteries on her site. So it might be useful to visit her pages as well as ours. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialouisa/cemindx.htm Susie's Cemeteries: httt://www.geocities.com/Heartland/8613

    3. Keith - Thank you! Thanks for looking. 3. Dear Connie, Change of plans--we didn't get to go to Des Moines and then Rochester, Minnesota, as we had planned, so I can reply to you a bit sooner. You have some questions I'll try to answer--but not all of them. I am not related to the Willis family here. I gathered the information I have in tracking down descendants of the people in the photographs. I haven't pursued this for several years--lots of things I start never get finished, as I get involved with something new. I have information on dozens of Louisa County families. Norma and I have spent years in gathering such information, and we are both members of the Louisa County Genealogical Society and help others as time and energy permit. We don't have a Corresponding Secretary and I partially fulfill that function, but not always on a timely basis. My mail address is 325 Franklin, Wapello, IA 52653 and telephone 319-523-8164. I am posting this to the entire list, because there may be someone else interested in the WILLIS name. Do you have the ability to receive a scanned photograph? What I have are commercial portraits prepared by a studio--not taken with a personal camera. Most have the name of the photographer or studio. I have a scanner, but haven't used it yet and don't know much about it--but should learn! One picture is of Mrs. E. Thompson and Mrs. Lairsa Willis (or it looks like Lairsa). They are both old in appearance--70's or so. There is a single picture that could be either Elizabeth or Lavisa--or neither. There is one that I think is Lavisa with a girl of about six or so, braided hair, with her arm around her grandmother, I would guess. There are pictures of the five daughters of Elizabeth; some are family portraits of their famililes. There is a picture of one daughter and family, Nancy, who married an Armstrong. Two young ladies are identified as Ida Hay and Sadie Dunn. There are baby pictures of Lila Clare Morrow and Glen Crawford Morrow. There is a picture of Sally Crawford, who later married John Morrow. I don't know if Robert Willis is pictured; there are several pictures of men, either singly or with parents, brothers, etc. How I identified pictures, gained familly information etc. is too long a story to relate here.
