One way to get things started on a an email list is to have a roll call. If each person would list the surnames they are researching, it would be a good way for everyone to see whether they share an interest in families. I have no Louisa County ancestry so I cannot start the ball rolling. Who wants to be first? Connie Street ckcasey@netins.net
I will start the ball rolling. Small ball however. My surnames are: GETTS PHILMAN Pat Kratz West Des Moines, IA
Roll Call Time: Owens, Willis

BEAUCHAMP MCKEAN CHERRYHOLMES RICHARDSON HAHN FOX These are the main family lines that I am researching in Louisa Co. I recently visited the courthouse in Wapello. The probate records are fantastic and easy to go through, if you have the chance check it out!!!!! Wendy McKean Thomas-Conroe TX wkthomas@vonl.com
How much does the Louisa Co. Historical Society charge for lookups? It seems that my mother's whole family came through Louisa Co. But, they are elusive there. My ancestors were: Simon Wisor WARNER (born 4 July 1811 in OH, died in IA) and his wife Nancy MILLER (born in OH in 1814, died in CO) They are on the 1850 Louisa Co. Census They were married in Louisa Co. in 1836; Martin DILLER (born ca 1814 in PA) and his wife Susan SMITH (born ca 1868 PA) They are on the 1860 Louisa Co. Census; James Bruce Pinkerton married Mary Ann DILLER (born in Bethlehem, Stark Co., OH in 1856, died in OR) Louisa Co. on 26 Dec 1867. James B. Pinkerton served in the Civil War from Louisa Co.; David Pinkerton ATWOOD and his wife Arvila GOWEY MILLER. They were in Louisa Co. because their daughter Harriet ATWOOD maried Simon W. WARNER's son, Simon Taylor WARNER in Louisa Co. The only person I know a lot about is Simon Taylor WARNER. He is my Gr Grandfather. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jim Hubbard
Hi Jim, I am interested in your Nancy MILLER. Do you have where in Ohio she was born and where in Colorado she died. Where is Simon WARNER buried? I have a John B. MILLER, born Preble co. Ohio, m Ann PAISLEY in Louisa co. IA, died Canon City, Fremont, CO. John B. also lived near Monmouth IL and in Anderson co. KS. Any of this indicate they are members of the same family? I am still trying to find siblings of John B. MILLER. Apparently everyone is sending look up requests directly to Bev Todd and it is wonderful that she is willing to look up information. to Linda Hurt re surnames Gilmore, Hunt, Bucher, Slade & Hamilton. Do you have a time frame when they were in Louisa Co? I just learned tonight that there is an index to the Louisa Co Marriage records which I intend to purchase as soon as possible. That will make the marriage look-ups much easier. I purchased my books in the early 1980's I believe. I did find 3 Hunt families in the 1850 Louisa Co. Census Book. h\h#15\15 Hunt, Charles age 59 farmer b NC Florence Twp. Hannah 58 PA Stephen 25 IN Sterling, Lucenia (sic) 10 IN (there are 2 other Sterling fam. if you want them) h\h#96\96 Hunt, Huron 40 wagonmaker NY Wapello Twp Harriet 37 OH John E. 17 farmer OH Charles 15 " " Eunice 12 " William C. 10 " Lua A. 8 " Henry V. 6 " h\h#14\14 Hunt, Jonathan 27 farmer IN " Elizabeth 28 NC There are 8 different Hamilton families but nothing for the other surnames. Would you like the list of all the Hamiltons? Bev
Connie--Thanks for the information. I was taking my information from my Handybook for Genealogists--the 8th edition. Thanks again, Bev
Nancy--I didn't find anything in the Census book I have for either of the two surnames you gave. Do you have a specific time frame? I would be able to check the marriage records easier & faster if I have an idea of when they were in Louisa Co. If you don't know I can still check, it will just take longer as the 116 page book is not indexed. Will be glad to check for you though. Bev
Hi gary--I only have the marriage record books however I can cross check them with the 1850 Louisa Co Census & Mortality Schedule--I have that book also. I did not find a marrige listed for Frank Tustison & Minnin Mann nor for he & Sophia Hook. I checked the listings for 5 yrs prior to the dates you gave & 5 yrs after in both cases. Checking the census records, I found no Tustison. For Hook I found the following-the page number in () is the pg number of the book I am checking: h\h#53\53 Hook, Elisha age 57 farmer b VA Jefferson Twp (53) Martha J. 17 " William B. 14 IN George W. 24 merchant VA Davis, Hester 22 " (54) Mallory, Harmon 31 machinist CT " " " " Mary A. 23 VA " Elisha A. 8 IA " Samuel W. 6 " " Lowley B. 4 " " Lorenzo G. 3 " One other Davis is listed; Oscar 19 laborer OH in h\h#105\105 William Gregory in Florence Twp. there are 5 other Gregory fam. listed if you want that information. There is also one other Mallory fam. In the Mortality Schedule: Mallory, Charles R. age 3 b IA d Apr of Inflamation caused by burning ill 7 days res. of Jefferson Twp as are the next two. Mallory, Jane T. age 5/12 b IA d Jul of whooping cough ill 40 days. Hook, ---?--- Jane age 57 married b VA d May of lung fever ill 10 days. For Mann in Census: h\h395\95 Mann, John age 35 millwright b PA Wapello (69) Jemima H. 31 " William H. 12 " Mary A. 9 " John T. 5 OH Imogene 5/12 IA I hope this information is of some help to you. I will be happy to check for any other marriages. Bev
To Bev; Would they make a copy of a marriage license for a fee and send it ? Or, it is necessary to write to the State Office of Vital Statistics in Des Moines? Please reply. Pat P. I don't know the question, but there is an obit for J.K. Pickett and a John Lucas. If those would help let us know. Keith/Connie Street ckcasey@netins.net >Hi Marcia; Checking my 1850 Louisa Co. Census, I find one WEBB, Iven C. age 22 farmer, b PA res. Grandview with Ellen C. b 26 b VA. they are in h\h# 108\109. Nothing for Lucas or Prickett. I will check the marriage records book I have & see if there is anything listed & get back to you. Bev
My experiences with records on computer in another county were not good.I finally searched the old book index myself and found my names.Sometimes i think the typos in the "new versions" that counties are transcribing are also misleading.I realize these old books have been used to the point of having them redone but when i look in the new versions at the information i am wondering what happened when the computer says one thing and the original is the reliable.I had 3 family surnames totally misspelled-i almost wrote a correction on the new version page. carol

To Patricia: I don't have vital statistics records themselves, only the books showing the groom\bride & the date of their marriage. The Clerk of the Louisa County District Court (117 S Main St, Wapello, IA 52653-1547) has birth & death records from 1880 & marriage records from 1842 & apparently divorce, probate & civil court records.
