I found several messages to/from Stephen as late as May in the rootsweb archives. Does anyone know how he can be contacted? I'm curious about the Bartenhagen/Creswell that he lists. Thanks, Judy
These were done by the historical society. We were told that members walked the cemeteries and the records were supposed to have been compared with previous records. Len Bowen who is putting together and index of the book and its supplements has found numerous errors in the book. The genealogical society hopes to make the index available when it is complete. Dear List, I here present limited LOCKE and DALLMEYER information that was requested by Helen Marie Jones, 118 Hilltop Road, Columbus Junction, IA 52738-9581, and which I recently researched--over a year after the request, unfortunately. Josiah Homer LOCKE was born 5 May 1846, in New Jersey; he died in Louisa County on 5 January 1923 and is buried in Indian Creek Cemetery. He married (1) (Unknown) and married (2) Emma Dallmeyer, daughter of Claus and Anna (Schlichting) Dallmeyer (see bios on this web site), born 9 February 1866; died 2/4 November, 1919. He came to Louisa County as a young man, then left for Ringgold County in Iowa and later moved on to Kansas. He returned to the Pleasant Grove church area circa 1893, and lived there almost thirty years. He leaves one unmarried sister, Miss Fannie Locke, living in Camden, New Jersey, a son, Howard, and two step-daughters. Children are: 1. Hazel Irene Dallmeyer was born 14 March 1899 and died in 1 December 1988. She was married to Ira E/T. Jones (1891 - 1968). 2. Mabel Dallmeyer lived as a single woman in Muscatine; she later married a Johnson and lived near Columbus Junction. 3. James Howard Locke, born 15 November 1907, in the Indian Creek area of Concord Township; died 24 January 1974, in or near Columbus Junction, and was buried at Indian Creek Cemetery. He married Catherine Schabilion at Kahoka, Missouri on June 20, 1941. He went by the name of Howard and worked for years for the Farmer's Supply Company of Columbus Junction. Howard and Catherine had two children: (1) James Howard Locke, Jr. and (2) Robert DeWayne Locke. Josiah Homer Locke's presumed 2nd wife had 4 half-sisters and a half-brother, they being: 1. Minnie M. Dallmeyer (1873 - 1967) who was married 18 August 1887 (at 14?) to John G. Richley and lived in Muscatine. 2. Matilda C. Dallmeyer (1873 - 1967) was married to Lewis B. Lee (1869 - 1926) on 25 July 1894. . 3 Lewis Madison Dallmeyer (23 November 1877 - 5 Feb 1966) married (1) Tracy Weise born 10 May 1881; died 4 February 1903; on 21 December 1898, and had children Harlan and Lois Lowe. Lewis Madison married (2) Gertrude and had children Lola Tremont, Kenneth, Helen Thompson, Floyd, Lewis, Carl, Agnes, Minnie, Francis. 4. Ida M. Dallmeyer (1884 - 1968) married Harry E. Littrell (1881 - 1931). 5. Dora A. Dallmeyer (1887 - 1974) married Arthur D. Crumly and lived in Columbus Junction area. Children are (1) Lloyd (2) Edwin (3) Leo (4) Robert (5) Max (6) Lester (7) Merle (8) Vida, who married a Hetzler. The above five Dallmeyers are half-brothers and sisters to Emma Dallmeyer, who married Josiah Homer Locke. Claus Dallmeyer (1818 - 1892) married (1) Anna Schlichting (1826 - 1869) and had Henry, Emma Locke and Mary. Claus married (2) Dora Wilkens (1845 - 1920) on 23 June 1870, and had children Minnie, Ida, Tillie (Matilda), Dora and Charles. OK, that is the basics. Much more could easily be fleshed in. I composed this as I went along, so hopefully don't have too many errors. Please let me know if there are errors! Dear list, I have seen several questions repeated by different members desiring to purchase Louisa County materials, and feel that a little clarification is needed. This is the official web site of the Louisa County Genealogical Society and the Webmaster is Norma Jennings. Neither the LCGS nor Norma sell ANY books or other research materials, for Louisa County or anywhere else! Neither has a policy of researching queries that are submitted--individual list members respond to such queries and requests for lookups. The LCGS has no one assigned to monitor and answer any requests. List members do not have to be LCGS members. LCGS members receive society newsletters. Norma Jennings produces them and is co-editor of the publication. LCGS members, by snail-mail, may request research on family names. Addresses and policies and prices are on this website. LCGS has prepared and has produced numerous books providing research materials for Louisa County. The merchandising and publishing of these books has been done by the Iowa Genealogical Society. Click IGS Publications on this website and a complete list of available books to order, prices, etc. will come up. There is also a Louisa County Historical Society, separate from and independent of the LCGS. The two societies share ownership of co-mingled materials in the Heritage Center Library; the Genealogical Society provides the research assistance according to policies laid down by the Historical Society, owner of the building. The Historical Society has several publications about Louisa County that provide genealogical information. The Historical Society has self-published these books. The most important for all genealogists is the 1990 Cemetery Book, which lists all known burials in Louisa County Cemeteries (albeit there are some known errors and omissions). Each of over 60 cemeteries is indexed alphabetically--but there is no overall index. Len Bowen has a rough draft made of an every-name index for the entire 1990 volume plus the yearly supplements published. He is waiting for local society members to re-walk many cemeteries to clarify dates, spellings, names, ages, etc. and the end is not yet in sight for that. The objective, on completion, would be to have this published by the Iowa Genealogical Society in order to make the 1990 Cemetery Book easier to use. The Historical Society address is also on this Website. You must write them to get a list of the publications they currently have for sale. Our Genealogical Society used to list their publications, but they have criticised us for doing so. You now place your orders directly to the Historical Society. The Genealogical Society cannot be used as a go-between any longer. Please let me know if any of you have further questions. I would like to get the list of grave names for this cemetery. Please advise. I think they may be in the Columbus Junction library at 20cents a sheet. I do not know the address or the number of sheets. thanks, Ingrid

Dear Dennis and List Members; Jan M. Banicki, 451 S. Phillipa Street, South Bend, Indiana 46619, is searching for information about LONGSHORE, LITSEY, PETERS and WILCOX families in Louisa County. I think she is just beginning on her genealogy search and can benefit from the experience and advice of any who share the same family lines that she does. Dennis, thank you for donating your LITSEY, WATTS, VANHORN and HELMICK genealogies to the Louis County Genealogical Society Heritage Center Library. They have already born fruit. Your information, Dennis, is far more complete than what I have found, so I am referring you to Jan and her to you. I made one interesting find that may add some information to what you have. In the Louisa County Recorder's office, in order to clarify title to land transactions, an early common practice was to solicit affidavits from individuals who had personally known the grantee or grantor in a particular transaction. Mary E. Selman, granddaughter of Anthony Litsey, made such a deposition on August 5, 1907. I present here all the information in the deposition in the order it was given (most of it) and hope it adds a few tidbits to what you have. These are the heirs of Anthony Litsey, who died 30 July 1959 in Louisa County, Iowa, and are named as of 1907 with the home locations given in some cases. 1. Mary E. Humiston, widow, of LaSalle, Illinois. 2. Harriet S. Allen, wife of Leonard Allen of Illinois. 3. Emeline E. Way, wife of Leonard Way of Defiance, Iowa. 4. Susan A. Smith, wife of James Smith of Orchard City, Washington. 5. Gertrude M. E. Wilcox (1846 -1920), wife of Henry Wilcox of Cairo. 6. Lunetta Marshall, also called Annetta, wife of John F. Marshall, of Cairo. 7. Sarah J. Helmick (the affiant), wife of William A. Helmick. 8. Laura A. Burns, wife of Lewis Burns of LaSalle, Illinois. Numbers 7 and 8 above were both deceased, and so their heirs are named. Sarah, #8, was born in 1831 and died 15 December 1882. Her husband, William A. Helmick, was born in 1818 and died on 10 December 1890. Children were: 1. Estella Helmick, wife of William H. Nellis of Missouri. 2. Mary E. Helmick, wife of George Selman of Columbus Junction. 3. Olive A. Helmick, wife of George Watts of Nebraska. 4. Josie M. Helmick, married a Bishop, now a widow from Cedar Falls. 5. Francis R. Helmick, married a McAvoy. She died circa 1880, but had a son, Frank P. McAvoy. 6. Henry A. Helmick, died circa 1880; his widow, Margaret E. Helmick is still living in Louisa County, as is her son, Glen Helmick. Glen married Olive (Unknown). Laura Helmick, # 8 above, was also deceased. Children of Laura and her husband Lewis Burns, of LaSalle, Illinois, are: 1. Luella Burns married Mack Hughes and lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. 2. Flora Burns married Philo Henry Head. 3. George burns lives at LaMoille, Illinois. OK, that is all from here at the moment. This is written August 12, 1999 and gives the list some information about sources of information in Louisa County for the given surnames. It was written as a response to a query by Vivien Andrews, and is a copy of the snail-mail letter I have sent to her. Contact her if you have information on any of these surnames. Thanks, from Keith. Vivien A. Andrews RR 1, Box 22 Cimarron, NM 87714 Dear Vivien, The Clerk of Court employees do no research for genealogists and your letter to them has eventually worked its way around to me as a member of the Louisa County Genealogical Society. There are DANIELS probate records for Nellie E., William, Frank, Johanna, Joe, Leo and J. Frank. There are RICHARDS probate records for Richard, Margaret, Hugh, Sarah, John, Ann, R. L., Elizabeth J., Edwin M., Edith J., and Evelyn. There are ARTHUR probate records for Wm., Hugh, William L., Clifford, Anna, Richard, Shirley, Margaret, Esther E. and Stanley. You never know the size of a probate package until you look at it. The bigger ones are well over 100 pages; the smallest might contain only one paper that gives you useful information. Some offices in the courthouse charge $1 per page copied; others are less. You would have to look at the probate records to determine the age--the list I present is from the first record up to the present time. Our cemetery records for the county show 7 Daniels, 28 Richards and 26 Arthurs. Before 1900 are 5 Daniel marriages, 4 Arthur marriages and 11 Richards marriages. You can see that copying things would be very expensive! There is also a wealth of information stored in Louisa County for these surnames, and, if you are able, you should come and research in person. Many of the records have been filmed by LDS and are available on microfilm. Hope this is of help to you. Sincerely, For the Louisa County Genealogical Society 607 Hiway 61 North Wapello, IA 52653 Keith/Connie Street ckcasey@netins.net 325 Franklin Ave, Wapello, IA 52653-1515 319-523-8164
Hi! I'm trying to find information on my 4th Great-grandparents: Harry HOSFORD and Hannah COX. This tis the information that I have on them: Hannah was born 30 Dec 1804, the family Bible doesn't list a location, but all Census references to her state that she was born in Virginia. Her granddaughter wrote some additional information stating that her maiden name was COX and her parents were Ezekiel (I think, the handwriting was difficult to read) COX and Mary HOFFMAN. Hannah had siblings: Isaac, Sarah, Caroline & Ezekiel. Apparently before Hannah and Harry HOSFORD married, she had been married to a HUMPHREY or HUMPHREYS, because she also lists a son named William H. HUMPHREY(S) in the Bible, with a birthdate of 1828 (again, she did not put in place of birth). Harry HOSFORD was born 10 Dec 1811 in Connecticut (according to Census references). Harry and Hannah were married 9 Jun 1835, possibly in Indiana. They had the following children: Mary Ellen b. 13 Nov 1837 possibly in Indiana. She married J. G. HOLLAND on 9 Sep 1860 in Story Co, IA. Sarah Ann b. 14 Oct 1839 in Indiana, d. 14 Oct 1916 in Blaine, Whatcom Co, WA. She married first Daniel LOOMIS 17 Jun 1860 in Linn Co, IA; and second Abraham N. HESS 11 Mar 1869 in Polk Co, IA. Hannah Isabell b. 8 Nov 1842 in Iowa, possibly in Linn Co. but not sure, d. 6 Aug 1901 in Bellingham, Whatcom Co, WA. She married Thomas Martin Van Buren DAWSON on 27 Jan 1859 in Story Co, IA. I have these questions: I found a Hannah HOSFORA in the 1850 Iowa Federal Census Index, could this be Harry's wife? Was Harry dead then, or was he still alive. She is listed in Louisa County, Columbus (Twp?) page 089 according to the index. Is there a transcription of this Census online? In the Story County GenWeb site I found the following household in the 1856 Census for Story Co: Hannah WARD, age 51, Widowed, b. VA, lived in IA 13 years Sarah A. HOSFORD, age 16, b. IN Hannah I. HOSFORD, age 13, b. IA This looks like my family, but I'd never heard of a third marriage. Is there a record of this marriage of Hannah to a man named WARD? I didn't find it in Story Co's database. Also, in the HOSFORD Genealogy book there is a Harry HOSFORD, son of William HOSFORD II & Sally WRIGHT? who was allegedly a pioneer of Council Bluffs, IA, could this Harry HOSFORD be MY Harry HOSFORD? I know that Council Bluffs keeps popping up in family stories. Thomas DAWSON allegedly ran a hotel in C.B. before moving west. Does anyone know where Harry HOSFORD is buried? It seems like he died before Jun 1850. Any help would be great! Brenda Hébert

ARINGTON family August 1999 I present the results of the limited research I did in Louisa County records for the surname ARINGTON. This could be a starting place if you are researching this name or collateral lines to it. I consulted records in Louisa County; I have not examined census records, nor read most probate and/or land records and have not researched outside Louisa County. I researched the ARINGTON name because of a query a year ago by Veronica Arington, RR 3, Box 53, Humboldt, NE 68376-9309. I finished what research I did today. I could not find the the obituary that was requested, but thought this family information should be made available in some form, hence this e-mail containing some family information. James Madison Arington, father unknown, was born 4 August 1817 in Ohio; he died on 28 March 1874 in Louisa County, Iowa, and is buried in the Fredonia Cemetery. He married (1) Ruth Lockna and had 3 children before they separated, namely James Clinton Arington (ancestor of Veronica), Amanda Arington and Thomas Arington. James Madison Arington married (2) in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1856 to Sarah Pommell/Pummell. Sarah was born 8 July 1848 in Danebridge, Ohio and died 13 November, 1909, in Columbus Junction. Iowa. James and Sarah came to Iowa in 1860. James served in the Civil War in Company I, First Artillery Regiment, but military records have not been sought or examined. James and Sarah had 8 children; they are dealt with separately in succeeding paragraphs. No attempt was made to trace descendants past the second generation, though some are named. Nothing has been entered into a computer genealogy program, this report being manually typed from the collection of raw data in Louisa County, for the most part. 1. Elizabeth Arington, born circa 1857, probably Fredonia, married Hiram J. Owens in Louisa County on 12 March 1884 and lived near Wapello. They had a son, George Arington, possibly more. 2. John C. Arington was born in 1859 presumably at Fredonia and died in 1936. He married Clara M. Worley (1869 - 1939) on 6 August 1887 in Louisa County. Known children are Kenneth M. Arington, Earnest D. Arington and possibly another John C. Arington. 3. Florence Adelia Arington was born 14 June 1861 at Fredonia; died 16 March 1911; was married 14 January 1884 in Louisa County to Joseph A. Warthman ((1857 - 1010) Florence and Joseph had a daughter, Ola, who married a Hafner, and a son, Cosson Wartham. 4. Harriet (Hattie) F. Arington was born in 1864, probably Fredonia; died in 1933; was married on 4 July 1888 in Louisa County to Samuel M. Harmon. The family lived in or near Farmington, Van Buren County, Iowa. They had at least one child, Lynn Harmon. 5. Martha (Mattie) Arington was born in 1866, probably Fredonia, and died in 1917; was married in Louisa County on 10 October 1884 to George E. Brackett (1857 - 1916). The family moved to Seattle, Washington, and had at least sons Lionel Guy and Glenn. 6. Alice May Arington wasborn, presumably at Fredonia, on 29 January 1868 and died ion 19 February 1868. 7. Joseph Bowers Arington was born in Louisa County on 15 March 1870; died 13/15 December 1949; he was a carpenter and lived in Columbus Junction. I have no record that he ever married, as he and his sister Fredonia lived together in the same house in Columbus Junction for over 50 years. 8. Fredonia (Dona) Almeda Arington was born in Fredonia on 30 January 1873; died on 3 March 1940 in Columbus Junction. Arington cemetery entries are primarily in Fredonia Cemetery and Columbus City Cemetery. There are Arington probate records, that have not been looked at, for Sarah J. Arington, Zelma May Arington, K. M. Arington, J. B. Arington, Earnest D. Arington and Fredonia A. Arington. I have obituaries for Sarah Arington, Florence Warthman, Joseph Wartham, J. B. Arington and Fredonia Arington. Hope someone can use this. From Keith Street Keith/Connie Street ckcasey@netins.net 325 Franklin Ave, Wapello, IA 52653-1515 319-523-8164
GRASHAM family I present limited GRASHAM material just researched for an old query that never got answered in a timely manner. Mary E. Hart, 1712 Grande Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403-2204, requested obituaries for George Graham and Jane Ann Morris Graham. While there were GRAHAM families in Louisa County, there were also GRASHAM families, and the two are often intermixed. George E. Grasham was born in Yarmer, Lincolnshire, England on 15 May 1818; died in Port Louisa Township, Louisa County, Iowa on 13 March 1909, at the age of 90 years 9 months and 28 days. RAWHOUSER family I present limited RAWHOUSER information that was researched while answering a query from Joan Lurvey, 2020 E Sunset, Springfield, MO 65804. No information Children of the second marriage, for David and Sarah. 1. Dr. C. D. Rawhouser, of Salem, Iowa. I have not been able to help Joan Lurvey. Joan wishes information on Caroline (Calla) Rawhouser, presumed daughter (but not listed above) of David Rawhouser. Caroline married (1) Arthur J. Glidden, had four children, and left him. She had at least two other marriages. A family with the surname of LONG is connected. Any member of the list who can help Joan? Information on this family has been sketchy. The Louisa County Genealogical Society has had no inqueries on the RAWHOUSER name until this one of Joan's. There are 2 probates that were not consulted, for Martha W. Rawhouser and for Joel Rawhouser. I believe Joel to be a son of David, but I have not found documentation to prove that. That could be easily proven by looking up census information. Presumably there is more information on the collaterals available in Louisa County records and elsewhere, but I do not have time at present to search them. Hope this helps someone.
