You have provided some astounding information. I've seen lots of Emig records back in York County PA,, but have never been able to trace Ewings--now I see why--Harriet was an Emig--not a Ewing--obviously some one in the family garbled it a couple of generations ago. The data about the cause of Levi's death is also signifcant to us, so again thanks for educating us all on the process and for doing the legwork for me in particular!!! Can't thank you enough. (Will send check and adress by snail mail.) 3. Bobbie And Carol, Just a couple of notes. I have used * in census information to indicate a marriage record for that person and the * again in the marriage listing to indicate that surname is in the 1850 census. (this could be the mother of Marinda in Thos. Shellenberger's home; possibly the wife of Noah McNemar who is listed in #34\34 house of Philip Thompson. 1. Newspaper obits
    2. Jessie & Beverly Todd
    3. A quick question: When were the first newspapers published in Louisa County. Just wondering if there were any as early as 1859, if so if there is an obit for my ancestors, Nathaniel C. & Cynthia Vandevort who both died in 1859? Another question: Is there an index on-line for the wills & probate records for early Louisa Co? Thanks, Bev Todd

    1. re:Answering messages on the list
    2. Norma F. Jennings
    3. Keith is 100% correct in sending data to the list rather than privately to an individual. This is the whole purpose of this list to "share information". If you don't want to read information that doesn't pertain to your family, there is a delete key for that purpose. As the listowner I encourage you to briefly quote the question without forwarding the entire message and answer it on the list. It isn't necessary to copy the person's e-mail address and entire message on the list when answering a question, but you do need to quote enough so other's know what the original question was. 3. Keith, One comment about your sending info to a specific individual via the list instead of privately - the info you sent on the Gentzler family will help Ed, but also any Gentzler researcher who accesses the archived messages. I have been helped so many times by searching various mailing lists using the Rootsweb Interactive search engine, and I am ALWAYS thrilled to find exactly the kind of info you've sent to Ed via the list. So I say go for it! For those of you who do not know how to use this wonderful resource: 1. go to this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/ 2. scroll down to the Table of Contents and select - SEARCHES 3. scroll down and select - SEARCH A MILLION MESSAGES FROM OVER 16,500 MAILING LISTS 4. type in the name of the list you wish to research and hit ENTER 5. (if you don't know the EXACT name of the list you can find it under SEARCHES but instead of selecting SEARCH A MILLION .... choose (SEE ROOTSWEB MAILING LISTS FOR A LIST) - You can search surname lists or geographical lists - this is a wonderful source of information. Although not every mailing list has its messages archived, most do. Thank you, Rootsweb! Mari Nielsen Families I'm researching in Louisa Co. - Bedwell, Harnett, Honts, Wykert, Knight

    1. Re: Obituaries Where???
    2. Keith/Connie Street
    3. Dear Ed, and List, I know some members object when answers to specific queries are sent to the list rather than to the requesting member, but I deliberately am sending this to the list, because someone besides Ed may be researching this same family. I think the purpose of the list is to exchange information, and I often would like to see the information that is sent privately to the public query--and don't have the opportunity. That is why I normally send the list any information that I have found when answering an individual query. There were no indexes to the obituaries Ed asked for. You get the information the hard way, by going to the microfilm copies of newspapers in the general area and using the dates, go through each issue of the paper near those dates. It is slow and time-consuming, but does produce results most of the time. I found obituaries in two different newspapers for each of the Gentzler's requested. If you, Ed, or anyone else, wish photocopies of the newspaper article, send me your snail mail address and a couple of bucks for copies and postage and I will send them. I typed the obits to include in this e-mail, as that is just as fast as scanning and then correcting the scanned image. From the Columbus Gazette of November 6, 1891. Levi Gentzler died at his home, two miles south of Columbus City, Saturday, October 31, 1891. He was born in Pennsylvania, January 15, 1826. He was an early settler in this county, a good citizen and a Christian man, being a member of the U. B. church. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor of that church, the Rev. Kelsey, of Columbus City, on Monday afternoon; remains were interred in the City cemetery. His death was the result of fatty accumulation at the heart. From the Columbus Safeguard of November 3, 1891. Father Livi Gentzler was buried today at 3:30 p.m. in our beautiful cemetery. Services were held at the U. B. church, Rev. Kelsey preaching the funeral. Mr. Gentzler was one of the pioneers of this county and is spoken of in the highest terms by those who were his neighbors and friends. We are told heart trouble was the cause of his death. We hope to give you a more extended notice in our next. (Later issues were searched, but no more information was found.) From the Columbus Gazette of December 23, 1909. Mrs. Harriet Emig Gentzler, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of this county, died at the home of her son, Adam Gentzler, near this city December 17, 1909, aged eighty-nine years, nine months and thirteen days. Deceased was born in York county, Penna., March 4, 1819 and early in life she was married to Levi Gentzler, who died some eighteen years ago. To them ten children were born, four of whom remain to mourn her death. They are Mrs. James Ogier, of Hedrick; Mrs. Ed McCoy, of Columbus City; and Reuben and Adam Gentzler of this city. She was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of the United Brethren church. Funeral services were held at the U. B. church in Columbus City Sunday, conducted by Rev. Mrs. Olive Stark, who preached from the text Job 5:26. Interment in Columbus City cemetery. From the Columbus Safeguard of December 23, 1909. Harriet Emig Gentzler was born in York county, Pa., March 4, 1823, and died in Columbus Junction, Dec. 17, 1909. She was united in marriage to Levi Gentzler in 1846. Ten children were born to them, six of them dying when small. Those living are Mrs. Jim Ogier of Hedrick, Ia.; Mrs. Ed McCoy of Columbus City; Reuben and Adam Gentzler of Columbus Junction. Mrs. Gentzler has made her home with her son, Adam, for the past thirteen years. Grandmother Gentzler was a kind, generous Christian woman and her death is deeply mourned by her relatives and numerous friends. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the U. B. church in Columbus City and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Olive Stark. Burial in Columbus City cemetery. Researched and copied at the Keck Memorial Libray in Wapello by Keith Street on August 25, 1999. Hope Ed and others can use this information. 3. Hi Judy, I can't remember if I posted this through the mailing list or not. I neglected to mark it iff my list of "done" things. I have checked the varient spellings-found Creswell spelled Cargell in the marriage book and found Rush also spelled Ruch. If they are listed in the marriage book I have used * to indicate that and also used it if the surname in the marriage book is on the census. 3. Dear Bev; I hate to say this because you never really know if you have everything, but when we were visiting my cousin Lorraine Willis in Muscatine this past July she kindly loaned me a hardbound copy of THE McKEE FAMILY - 1927, prepared by William Shakespear McKee, son of Leander McKee and a former Postmaster of the Muscatine Postoffice. He researched and compiled the family history. It is no longer in print and that is why I have a borrowed copy (which I am copying for my own use). My grandfather, Edgar Sangree Smith, who married Susannah Jane McKee was the only Smith by that surname who came to Iowa. There are no Smiths of his line in Louisa or Muscatine Counties. However, the McKees are probably all related. Would you send me what you have found of the McKees/McKays? Thank you. Pat P.
