Within the last two years, the birth, death, marriage, etc. records were moved from the Clerk's Office to the Recorders office. This was a statewide move so you will now find these in the Recorder's Offices in any county in Iowa. Norma Jennings
Marni and List, I have made notations in my census book regarding the parents of Lavina BEDWELL's parents. Too bad the book doesn't indicate the relationship as the film does. We can't expect everything I guess--would make our research too easy. All the input I appreciate very much and will make the notes in the books I have. Thanks again. Bev
Mari and list, There isn't much on the 1850 Census for HUNT and nothing for YOUNG but here goes. To clarify, the town\twp following the place of birth is the residence at the time of the census. As before, I use * to indicate a marriage listing for that person and in the marriage listing, to indicate that surname is on the census, not necessarily that person. For my notes, I will use **. #15\15 HUNT, Charles age 59, farmer, b NC, Florence Twp; Hannah age 58, b PA; Stephen age 25, b IN; (also in same house) STERLING, Lucenia age 10, b IN. Willa & all, In reply to your query of 9/7/99 regarding where to send for probate records--I am referring to my copy of The Handybook for Genealogists, the 8th Edition, which was published in 1991 so some of the information may be out dated. It is published by Everton Publishers, Inc. and very handy to have. I understand there is a newer edition out now. For Louisa County it states the following: Clerk of District Court has birth and death records from 1880, marriage records from 1842 and divorce, probate and civil court records. The address given is Louisa County, 117 S. Main St. Wapello, IA 52653-1547. Maybe Keith or Connie has more current information. Bev
First of all, I really am sorry I repeated my messages, due to a problem, that I hope I've corrected! Yes, Mari, I would like to get anything on the YOCUM, GRAVES and HILL lines that I am working on. Hi Bettijane and all listers, As most researchers are aware, handwriting in the various original records, census, marriage, etc. were not always the best and at times nearly impossible to decipher. The letters I,E, O, A, M, N, U--on and on can be miss-interpreted by the person extracting those difficult to read records. Therefore, what is written in the books I am using is what I post--if the spelling looks odd to me I will indicate it by (sic). I know first hand about names being mis-spelled. VANDEVORT (my maiden name) has been spelled every way possible and then some. To this day, my birth certificate is spelled VANDERVORT yet my father's name is spelled correctly. Go figure. Anyhow, any corrections any of you send me I will note in my books & give both what is in the book & the correction whenever I post the information again. The person who extracted the marriage records made the comment " the spelling was very hard to make out on some names. I, J-C-, H-W and M sometimes are nearly alike. Keep this in mind if looking for a name and a letter is wrong. These names and dates have been carefully checked, but interpretation of spelling can be in error." (p 32 of marriage book). I do appreciate the input. Thanks, Bev
Marilyn Allerton is indeed in Wayne County. These two you are seeking are buried in the Allerton Cemetery. William J. Grimes 1849 - 1904. Margaret A. Grimes 1850 - 1921. Also an infant Charles D. Grimes son of W. J. & M. A. Grimes died Jan. 2, 1882 age 11 months. You might check the Wayne County Genealogical Society or Prairie Trails Historical Museum at Corydon, Iowa for another obituary which may have more information on relatives. Both addresses are listed on the Wayne County website. Hi again: Perhaps you could put a note beside Young, saying it was Yocum, rightly. This is my Grandmother who married my Grandfather, so I mentioned the Marriage Record that I have a copy of, to let you know I wasn't coming from left field somewhere. They were married on 3 March 1889, Oakland Twp, County of Louisa, IA. It is Certified by W.P. Davis, Justice of the Peace. Etta Viola Yocum was born the same place mentioned above. -----Original Message----- From: Keith/Connie Street <ckcasey@netins.net> To: Bettijane Larson <bjlarson@uswest.net>; IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com <IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, September 08, 1999 11:41 PM Subject: Re: Pat re marriges for surnames >It could only be done by court order, so you would have to have proof enough >to satisfy a judge. > >(I witnessed a woman once (not here) who ranted and raved and threw a >tantrum because her grandmother's middle name was not in her birth record. >The clerk finally changed it just to get rid of her. Hi Mari, Just reading over your post of 9/5/99--what I have on the census is #15\15 SMITH, George age 29, farmer, b Canada, Fredonia; his wife, Nancy (nee BLAKE), age 33, b VA. (the marriage listing shows they were married 3 Aug 1843 --Bk "A" p 16). Also in that household is M. Joseph McCLARY. I didn't find him listed at all either under that spelling or under McClurg--apparently it was missed when the book was published. These are the George SMITH marriages listed: Bk "A" p 16 3 Aug 1843 George SMITH\ Nancy BLAKE (6) Bk "B" p 149 24 Dec 1857 George SMITH\ Katherine WINKLEMAN (25) Bk "D" p 365 26 Nov 1873 George A.SMITH\ Mary E. Mc AVOY (58) Bk "D" p 396 22 Apr 1874 George B. SMITH\ Lettie SAMPLE (59) Bk "E" p 53 14 Sept 1876 G.W. SMITH (George W. on 1850 census, s/oJohn & Rachel in Jefferson Twp?)\ Adeline FRIZZELL* (65) Bk "E" p 227 18 Sept 1879 George SMITH\ Amanda SIVERLY* (72) Bk "I" p 8 11 Dec 1898 George H. SMITH, 30\ Vina I. NEWELL,* 27 (114) There could very well be another George & Nancy SMITH however they are not listed on the 1850 Louisa Co. census nor is there a marriage listing for a Nancy BEDWELL in Louisa Co. There quite a number of SMITH marriages which I will post in a few days. This information probably will only add to the mystery for you. Bev
Bev (and others who are researching these names), Thanks so much for posting all this info on the mailing list! I admire your perseverance and dedication and am extremely grateful to you for spending all the time I know it takes to extract and then post this stuff so we can have the information. A big thank you! I have a couple of corrections to the info that you posted on MILLER and BEDWELL: Here is what you've posted: Bk "B" p 26 11 Nov 1855 Alexander MILLER*\ Lavine BEDWELL* (20) (s/o Henry & Lydia\ d/o Daniel & Jane CANNON BEDWELL) Correction: Lavina Bedwell (b. November 1840) was the niece of Daniel Bedwell (she was the daughter of Daniel's brother, John Bedwell, and Eliza Jane Harnett). In the 1850 census she was living in the home of Daniel Bedwell, his wife Jane, and his mother, Rachel Bedwell whose husband died in Jan of that year. He was the James Bedwell who is listed on the mortality index. Daniel was only 22 at the time of the 1850 census, and Lavina was 9. And this one: Bk "C" p 70 11 Sept George W. HUNT*\ Lavina MILLER* (38) Correction: This should read George W. HONTS and Lavina MILLER. They married in Louisa Co. in 1865, after her first husband Alexander MILLER died in 1863. As a HONTS researcher I can tell you it is a frustrating name to research (as Gary Honts, another list member and my 3rd cousin once removed, can attest!) because it is spelled so many different ways in records of that era - Honts, Honce, Hance, Haunts, Hons, Houts, Houtz, Hants, Hontz, etc. On George and Lavina's marriage certificate it is spelled three different ways - on one document! Again, thanks for posting all this info for us. If anyone has any BEDWELL info to share please post it. I'm working with Norma Jennings to post the BEDWELL info to the Louisa Co. website. Thanks. Mari Nielsen

It could only be done by court order, so you would have to have proof enough to satisfy a judge. (I witnessed a woman once (not here) who ranted and raved and threw a tantrum because her grandmother's middle name was not in her birth record. The clerk finally changed it just to get rid of her. The next day the woman realized she had given the clerk the wrong name. Too late, it's in ink and generations down the line with think the middle name is Francis when it was really Elizabeth.) (This woman also put up some gravestones with dates that she guessed at - they were wrong, too.)
