    3. Does anyone on the list have copies of the histories of any of the Louisa County cemeteries that aren't already on line on the LCGS website?? Have you taken photos of any other cemeteries than we already have posted? If so I would like to have copies. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide for this project. Norma Jennings

    3. To Norma; I am delighted you have shared the experiences of a soldier of the Civil War through his diary writings. My own gr.grandfather served in Company I, 8th. Regiment of the Iowa Calvary, enlisting at Davenport (Scott Co.) Iowa, 10 July 1863. His experiences could have been very similar. Thank you. Pat P. FL ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norma F. 3. Merry Christmas! Family members and Civil War buffs alike have received a nice Christmas gift this year from Kansas. Ron Smith, an Attorney in Kansas, and a great, great grandson of Mifflin Jennings, has provided an electronic transcription of the Diaries of Mifflin Jennings (1843-1922) During the Civil War for use on the Louisa County Genealogical Society web site. Sixty pages of day by day accounts of his experiences of the war and of news from home. An original letter from his father Benjamin Jennings is included and accounts of boys from home joining the fight. Benjamin mentions the service to be preached for Mifflin's brother Elijah who had died from the war. Knowing that Mifflin, too, was ill, Benjamin requested he have a likeness taken of himself to send home in the event they lost him, too. Benjamin Jennings who was a deacon in the church addressed everyone as "brother" including his son according to his faith. It was a great privilege to have the opportunity to convert these for use on the Internet. I hope you enjoy them even half as much as I did in preparing them for you.. These diaries can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialcgs/mifflinj.htm Norma Jennings

Ancestry's ends January 4, 2000 and FTM's is for a week and Everton ends 12/31/99." I was able to successfully use the ancestry.com free access using Internet Explorer browser (ancestry.com had a problem with my Netscape 4.5 browser). I have not been successful gaining access to the FamilyTreeMaker or Everton's. There is lots of information to explore on ancestry.com. I recommend checking it out. You have to register for a userid and password (appears no strings attached) and then access is granted. You can use the global search to search all databases. Or if you want a list of their databases, on the first page at the top select the SEARCH tab, then select ADVANCED SEARCH, scroll down and on the left look for List of All Databases and select VIEW A LIST. This is convoluted to find, but I wanted to get an overview of the type of databases they carry. Remember you can use your browser's Edit/Find function to quickly find database names on this list of databases. Roberta R. This is not true. Our lists are filtered and no attachments are allowed. This virus sends itself out to the addresses in your address book using an address it found there as the sender's address. So if you have the address of a list in your address book, the virus may use that to make it appear it came from the list. It does not actually come through RootsWeb, it only looks like it did. Here is what Tim Pierce had to say about this recent virus: Hi, folks - We've had a lot of reports tonight about a virus being passed around on RootsWeb lists. I have looked into these reports and it does NOT appear that the viruses have actually been sent through our lists. I've included a semi-technical explanation of what I have been able to find out, for those of you who are curious. The only important message here is that RootsWeb's lists are NOT the source of recent virus reports. What seems to be happening is that the current flock of viruses do the following things when they infect a new computer: * The virus sends a copy of itself to everyone in the computer's address book; * It forges its own return address to look like it was sent by someone *else* in the address book; * and it uses the Subject line from a message that was recently sent from that machine. So if an infected person sent mail to BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com, the virus might send out mail like this to someone else in the victim's address book: From: BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com To: joe@example.com Subject: [BUMBLEROTTER] looking for Fred and Wilma Bumblerotter http://stuart.messagemates.com/index.html Hypercool Happy New Year 2000 funny programs and animations... We attached our recent animation from this site in our mail ! Check it out ! Even though the mail never was sent to RootsWeb, the return address is forged to make it appear as if it came from us. I will continue to work on figuring out if there is anything that we can do about this; in the meantime, please assure any concerned subscribers that subscribing to a RootsWeb list is not dangerous. :-) -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb.com lead system admonsterator and Chief Hacking Officer What can you do? Protect yourself by never opening an attachment from someone you do not know or that looks suspicious. Use a virus protection program. Know what viruses are out there so you will recognize one when if you get it. There are sites that will help you such as: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.stanford.edu/group/partners/hoaxes.shtml http://kumite.com/myths/ http://www.mcafee.com/centers/anti-virus/default2.asp and many others. Remember, if you do not open the attachment, you can not get infected with the virus. Delete it. Then empty the trash bin to make sure it is gone. If you are using an email program that stores attachments elsewhere on your computer, such as Eudora, find it there and delete it too. -- Richard Harrison/Encinitas, San Diego, California IAGenWeb State Coord.: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iagenweb/index.htm IAGEN-L List Owner: IAGEN-L@rootsweb.com IOWA-L List Owner: IOWA-L@rootsweb.com Jones Co. We don't pay anyone for this but there is a Pioneer Cemetery Commission that does some work...The main volunteer seems to only want to work where he wants to work, and the commission members won't stand up to him. If there is family member of a person in a cemetery who wants to donate money, he's more apt to get interested. He has spent a lot of personal time and money on the project and has been able to get grants and donations, but I get very frustrated with his attitude!! Do you have a particular cemetery in mind?? 3. Bill: I am just getting some information on the Francis and Elizabeth Hill family descendants, but I don't have very much yet on those in the 1900's, only those previous to that. Some of the names you mentioned are Family names, but I have been connecting those born mostly in the 1800's. My mother was born in 1896. I just got a book from a cousin in IA, and it is possible she follows through farther. When I find time, I'll check to see if you have a match with her, but if you don't hear soon after the Holidays will you please contact me again, as a reminder. 3. I believe that my great-grandfather, Jesse Justus Hill is buried in Oakland-Carpenter Cemetery. His wife, Sarah Long Hill may also be buried there with her infant daughter. Sarah and daughter died on Sept 1, 1860 and Jesse Justus Hill died in February of 1864. Jesse left three orphaned children who were cared for by their uncles, Samuel, Gideon and Israel Hill. One of the children, Howard A. Hill, was my great-grandfather and is buried here in Redmond, Oregon. Howard went with one of the uncles, Aenos Clark Hill to Clay Center, Kansas where he met and married my great-grandmother, Sarah Craig. Howard and Sarah had twelve children. Jesse Justus' father was Francis Hill and his mother was Elizabeth Truss Hill. Both Francis and Elizabeth are buried at the Oakland-Carpenter cemetery. My great-grandfather was born in Fredonia. Perhaps Jesse Justus was buried there. Keep up the good work, happy holidays from the Northwest. Diann Gentis Redmond, Oregon Diann Gentis
