About 20 years ago our board of supervisors, in its infinite wisdom, decided there was no reason people would want to look at old newspapers and carted the oldest ones to the dump. We only have extant newspapers back to about 1880. We do however have cemetery listings, land records, wills and tax records that could be checked. I am seeking info on Isaac Moore Jr. or his father, Isaac Moore Sr. Isaac Jr. m. C/Sharlotte Chambers on 9/3/1835. Have no spouse for Isaac Sr.; his other children are: Nathan Moore, b. 2/4/1813; Leital Moore, b. 2/25/1815; Charloty Moore, b. 12/18/1817; and Elizabeth Moore, b. 3/30/1822. Isaac Jr. and S/Charlotte Moore had the following children: Sarah Jane (my g.g.grandmother), b. 1852 (m. Thomas Hall Bousman 1/10/1870 in KS); George W., b. abt 1853; Samuel A.; Martha (m. Edward Blair); James Riley (killed in Civil War); Allen; and Wilbert. I have a letter dated 1864 from Isaac Jr. and C/Sharlotte Moore with the name of Columbus, Iowa at the top. It states that one of the children (Wilbert) had typhoid fever in 1864. It also mentions Allen Moore and Lib (possibly Elizabeth, his sister). Mentions someone by the name of Dubois. Others mentioned include: Samuel Moore and family, Sam Chambers (possibly C/Sharlotte's brother) and Aunt Sharlotte). If anyone has any connection to these folks or any suggestions on where to look, please email me. Thanks. Lois in CA
You might try contacting Royce Bonnichsen, RR 1, Columbus Junction 52738 (Phone 319-729-2321) and ask if there is a plat of the cemetery. He is a township trustee. I am searching for any information about Rev. Richard Hughes who married Sarah Rees May 21, 1847 in Llandebie, Carmarthenshire, Wales. They celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1897 in Cotter, Louisa Co., IA. He died Aug 22, 1898 and she died Sept 7 1897. They are both buried in the Cambrian Cemetery in Louisa Co. I know they are related somehow to my Grandmother Jennie Barnes Graves but I don't know any thing else about them.
Yes, there are places to stay. It kind of depends on what you are looking for. Wapello has a motel and hotel and there is a newer hotel in Columbus Junction. There are two bed and breakfasts in the county, another will be opening soon. No fancy eating places. Be sure to eat at least once at the bait shop (and have a piece of pie!). There are two cafe's down town and a deli at the grocery store, plus a pizza place, a sub shop and a sandwich/ice cream shop. You won't go hungry. Plan ahead and make an appointment to do research at the Heritage Center. There is also genealogical information at all four public libraries in the county. If you are here the fourth Tuesday, be sure to attend our LCGS meeting. Richard Malachy Ward died in Morning Sun in 1861. Any census information on him, or cemetery records--I've tried the local cemeteries and haven't had any luck. Also I would love to have his obituary, but the Morning Sun Library said it was not in the Morning Sun newspaper. Thanks in advance for ANY help. Patty

Information and addresses are on the following web site. Please remember that legislators ignore messages that are sent to a bunch of people at one time, so send one letter to each person. I know it is a little more time consuming, but will have a bigger effect. If the ones you are writing to, don't represent your area, tell them what part of Iowa you are concerned with. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iagenweb/index.htm Keith/Connie Street ckcasey@netins.net 325 Franklin Ave, Wapello, IA 52653-1515 319-523-8164 -----Original Message----- From: Ms42son@aol.com <Ms42son@aol.com> To: IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com <IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, February 11, 2000 6:11 PM Subject: Re: Iowa Records >In a message dated 2/6/00 8:51:20 AM Eastern Standard Time, >ckcasey@netins.net writes: > ><< The state wants to close birth records held in the counties, which are now > open for inspection, for 75-95 years. Dear Carol, I am glad you found a cousin and are now jointly sharing and researching. To answer your questions: The Louisa County Recorder, in the courthouse at Wapello, has vital records such as birth, marriage and death, but also has all of the land records showing land transfers before Iowa became a state, this being the transfer of Federal lands to private individuals. The office is open from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. There are some days when it closes during the noon hour. There are affidavit indexes that often contain genealogical information. These affidavits were used to clarify title to property, and often contain valuable genealogical information. So there are records here to research. On the wall of the Historical Museum a large map of Louisa County in 1858 shows the names of the property owners. This is the only 1858 map or plat book that is available for researching, as far as I am aware. The one we have is a composite made up of at least 2 maps. The original maps were promotional ones that professional peddlers used in Europe to entice people to come to Burris City and Louisa County. You can locate places etc. on this map, but you can't make copies from it. Keith, your phone numbers for the Utter's worked wonders!!I thank you so much..We have connected with a "cousin" also looking, found out there is a Bible for the Cole line and now have another question. Which office would have this??.There is also a J.H. Cole listed by Columbus City in the section the Mississippi&Missouri Railroad tracks ran thru to Clifton?? Seems to be a lot of JR Duncan family listed by them. Do you have an 1858 plat map intact at the Museum that is not split up like this one on film. Carol
No. It is best to stay away from genealogy but talk about not punishing the innocent, but punishing those who steal identities. It's best if we do not send form letters. Thanks for your offer. If you would rather talk about genealogy, talk about the pocketbook and the considerable amount of money you spend in Iowa when you come here to research!! To Pat Walker; I am forwarding a message I received from a fellow genealogist in Indiana that you might find of interest concerning the proposed legislative action to close certain public records. I would be interested to know your thoughts on the matter. Pat P. Dear Norma and List Members: Once again our government has found the wrong solution to the right problem. Take away from all the good people of this land and punish them, so the guilty ones are not tempted to do ill deeds. Don't punish anyone for stealing these records, just take them away so no one can have them. Richard Harrison was right in his message when he talked about sending money for a record, they will come back and say NONE WAS FOUND and charge you the fee whether they looked or not. It happens in Illinois. Below is the address for Governor Vilsack. There is a place on his website for emails. Let's go to the TOP MAN with our complaints. http://www.state.ia.us/governor/comments/index.html Verna May -- Alone we can do little, together we can accomplish much. ....Helen Keller http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawayne/index.htm Mailing List: IAWAYNE-L-request@rootsweb.com
