I was wondering if you would do a lookup on your index cards for me too. I plan to go to Wapello soon to do some more research. Surnames: McChesney McCleary/McLeary Grasham Archibald Thanks so much! 3. Janice I'm going to have to do some research on this and see where Leon & Chas. T. fit into the family, if indeed they do. Of equal interest to me is the name Harbaugh. I just lost my uncle Robert (Bob) Harbaugh this last summer. -- Don't know if there is a relationship here with Mrs. Richard Harbaugh or not. I do know that Bob had a brother -- Buzz, I think (a nickname probably) -- who ran a taxi service in Muscatine during the 40's and early 50's Thanks for the input. 3. Gary, Thanks a bunch for the help. I should have thought of that, as I have done it lots of times with other documents!!! I keep learning something about computer programs every time I start to work on something. Also using Excel for the transcription of the 1856 Louisa Co. Census. Progressing well, and hope to have the whole thing done and verified by summer. Jan

    3. Susie Martin-Rott -- If you were close by I'd give you a hug. WOW! I'd say when you're challenged, you're challenged. I thought I knew quite a lot about my family in Muscatine Co., but you just filled in a lot of gaps for me. Finding William and David (if they are indeed the ones I'm looking for, and I think they probably are) is the most exciting to me of all. I can't say thank you frequently and loudly enough to express my gratitude. Bless you. Gary James -- Oklahoma pentaby@alltel.net Gary James -- Oklahoma pentaby@alltel.net

From what I am seeing here, your research interest may be more in Muscatine Co than Louisa...lucky I do both (GRIN) I am NOT related to this line but when someone says a family "disappeared after 1853" it's a challenge... I don't know how much help this first part will be to you...it came from a gedcom file which had a lot of unrelated folks to me in it (but some of mine too) I DO know the contributor (he lives in Muscatine) and he may have more info (if you think this will help any, email me in private and I'll put you in touch with him). In his database he also had a bunch of "unconnected" James' as though he too was trying to hook them all together...if there is interest I will post an outline of those as well, though I don't know that they directly relate to Louisa Co. I did see one mentioning Henry Co IA I DID add two things to this list...since his data provided the wife's name for Wm Sr. I went over to www.familysearch.org and was able to find a marriage date/location for their marriage. I didn't look for the children, etc., just the marriage as I was trying to get a feel for the timeframe. He had only Gad and Stephen listed under the children, so I did add the "known siblings" from your message. Anyway, this post is INCREDIBLY long and I apologise to the rest of you but since others also had the JAMES name, I figured maybe someone else would see someone in this they connect to: Descendants of William James 1 William James b: in Wales .. +Elizabeth Phillips m: 24 Nov 1825 in Saint Dogmells Rural, Pembroke, Wales ........ 2 Stephen James ........ 2 Gad James ............ +Harriet Kyle m: 1866 ................... 3 Curtis William James (see below) ....................... +Nettie Mae Ripley ............................. 4 Harriette Barette James ................................. +Lorton R. 2. Keith/Connie Street
    3. Dear Deb and LCGS list. This is response # 14. BROWN-- there are 35 or so references to Brown, and many different families are represented, with no known connections to each other. It would be a kind of wild goose chase to send letters to all of the Brown families. Ask for the surnames of collateral families and that may help. A researcher in our Heritage Center could inspect each of the 35 folders in which the Brown name is mentioned, but should have the first names of the desired Browns before even doing this. Such a search would be long and tedious. PATTON--there are 4 entries, 1 with no address. Deanna Easthope Box 255 Elk Point, Alberta TOA 1AO Canada William C. 3. Hi Deb, I saw your message on the look-up for Patton and Brown. My gggGrandfather was Orlean Spafford married to Jane H. Patton. I won't be much help to you because all I have on Jane is her b. April 7, 1793 in NC. , married Orlean , April 3, 1822 in Madison IN. , d. May 6, 1871 in Louisa County. I have seen other Pattons in Louisa County and wondered if they were related. If you have any information you could share I would be very grateful, and would enjoy working with you. One other thing Benjamin Franklin Spafford, Orlean and Jane's son , my ggGF was married to Mary Jane Brown and all I know of her is her family migrated to IA. from IN. also . On the way her father died and her mother Sarah came on and located in Dubuque Co. with her family. I don't know who her brothers and sisters were, but it is possible they located in Louisa Co. , so maybe we might have a connection there, a long shot given the popular name of Brown Hope to hear from you, Margaret Stone

    1. Re: ROBERTS

    3. Janice No problem. I use Excel also and when I want to send part of it to someone, I copy and paste to Word, shuffle everything around to the way I want it, then either send as an attachment or copy and paste a second time directly to the E-mail I'm writing. I realize that that is a round about way of doing things -- that one doesn't have to do all that micky-mousing around with the various family tree soft war packages available -- but I started with Office when I couldn't afford the other and have learned to like, even prefer it, now. Especially Excel where you can click and drag and shuffle everything around the way you want. I'll let you know if I run across anything else. I also want to apologize for the way the names were listed. (In a long, long column.) I tried to "copy and paste" from the Excel worksheet, and didn't realize until I saw my message on the list that it didn't work. Still learning computer stuff, and didn't know I couldn't do that. > Jan > > ______________________________

    3. My husband's aunt married a Leon Thomas Hankins, in Muscatine Co., Apr. 8, 1934. He operated a hardware store in Muscatine for many years. He was also an antique car collector and exhibitor. A news article about him states that "his father and uncles taught him to work on cars, and one of his uncles studied to be a mechanic at the Ford school in Detroit...his family was mechanically inclined. His dad was the oldest of five brothers and they all liked to work on cars." His parents are : Chas. T. Hankins and Grace Carrier (not sure of her last name, it isn't too clear on the marriage certificate. One daughter of this marriage still lives in Muscatine. 3. As I recall, Theodore Gettert was an old man in the 40's and 50's. Of course, anyone over 40 was old to me in those days! However, I would guess he was in his 70's or 80's. I'll check around and see what I can find. Going to be gone for a few days, so won't get to it right away. Jan

My husband said he believes he had a son who lived in California, maybe Los Angeles. I could probably find out more about this, if you wish. > > Jan Definately the right family--but I am wondering if the one in Wapello was a Jr. to the Theodore I have or he would have been an older gent when you knew him in the 40s and 50's. I can't connect the Theodore I have (b. abt 1873) to the rest of the group (he is mentioned in the will of one of his unmarried uncles but it doesn't state the relationship to the family.) I know this Theodore was married on 09 Jul 1899 in Muscatine County to a lady named Effie Parker and that SHE is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine. He does not appear on the Greenwood records. I don't have any idea who their children were except for the fact that Effie apparently died as the results of childbirth complications at age 34. She and an unnamed infant were buried the same day. I don't know if they had other children before this infant (which is possible- they married in 1899 and she died in Dec 1907) I would guess this gentleman may have remarried after Effie died. Anything you could find out would be greatly appreciated. There are so few folks with the Gettert surname left that it's hard to track the descendants. __________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Get your FREE Internet Access and Email at http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html
