Thank You for the information on SARGENT & ADAMS from your index cards. I have another question. 8-) From the Louisa Co. GenWeb site I found this listing of marriages for: 1841 Adams, Nancy Eleanor to Sargent, Abraham - 11 March 1841 The state says that their records start in 1880. Where is the above information kept, and how do I get copies? Also, are birth records available for the 1840s and 1850s? Jim Cook Bellingham WA jimcook@memes.com
Hello: This book has been mentioned on this list. Apparently it has been mentioned before, but today was the first post I saw about it. Does anyone already have the book? If there is someone who does, could I please ask you to see if my GRAVES ancestors are even listed in the book? Some of the names I am looking for are Delatus, Rhoda, Robert Lincoln, Ira, Horace Greeley (Tim), William, and Charley. I don't want to spend $67.00 if my ancestors are not even listed in the book! Here's the info on the book that was on the website: ORTRAIT & BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF LOUISA COUNTY, Containing Full Page Portraits Biographical Sketches of Prominent Citizens of the County. 658p. (Acme Pub.; 1889); 1993; $67.00 Thank you in advance, Judy
Hi, I'm not. I need to concentrate on the ones I have and get them finished and filed. I have a letter from someone searching for John MOORE who lived in Louisa County intermittently between 1868-1880. He was married to Maria Elizabeth HINKLE. Are either of those names in your file? Jan H.
Hi all, Is anyone researching the GRISWOLD surname? Three members of the Giles Oliver Griswold family were early settlers in Louisa County. Henry (Harry) Griswold bought land in 1841 from the Burlington land office and was the first owner of record. He bought 320 acres and his address then was Meriden, New Haven County, Connecticut. Half of the land went to his brother, Franklin Griswold or Benjamin Franklin Griswold. I had only one Griswold record in my index, and I received a query on the name, so I am researcing it. Thanks Keith Street ckcasey@netins.net 325 Franklin Ave, Wapello, IA 52653-1515 319-523-8164
Are there books that would help with suggestions for these locations? There were 4 brothers who served from Louisa Co. I know where 2 are buried but one was killed in war and I have been trying to locate his grave. Does your research give you an idea of how often a body was returned to "home" or if they were usually buried nearby the death site? The last name was Merrill. If they are not on your list, I'll be glad to give you the two know. Thanks Jan
I've been working on a project for about 2 years now of recording the burial sites of Civil War soldiers from Iowa and could use some help with Louisa County guys. This database includes soldiers who died and are buried in IA regardless of what state or side they served, as well as men from Iowa who served in or are buried in other states (example-there were a bunch of West Liberty guys who joined the MO Cavalry and are buried in MO-they were FROM Iowa though) I have picked through the Roll of Honor and hundreds of cemetery books and transcriptions looking for these guys (Iowa alone had over 75,000 men serve) and have actually located only about 5 thousand so far (including those who served other states and are buried in IA, like my ggg grandfather Daniel Grimm who served in OH and is buried at Parr). Part of the problem is that many of them did not get "government" stones and there is nothing on their marker to indicate their service. One of the purposes of the project is that those who have no stones or stones which are illegible are entitled to receive a new marker from the Veterans Administration..but we have to know where they are BURIED first!! If you have such a soldier in your family tree, serving from or buried in IA and would like to have them included in the database, the info needed is: NAME RANK UNIT BIRTHDATE and PLACE DEATH DATE and PLACE CEMETERY and LOCATION misc: if you know pension number, wife's name, discharge info etc If you don't know everything, you can submit what you DO know and I'll eventually research the person and try to fill in the blanks. I will tell you up front that I do earn a nominal sum (less than $300 for 3,000 men) in doing this by allowing ancestry.com to have the electronic rights to my database. This helps me pay for copies from the roll of honor, pension and other books and documents. Since each group of 3,000 takes hundreds of hours to research, comparing names to rosters, etc, I am NOT getting rich off this thing. I however retain any hard copy publishing rights, therefore I can GIVE the darn list away to anyone I want, including the group who is working on the replacement markers, libraries, etc. I have a guy right now making me NUTS who is buried in Louisa Co. MAPES (no first name given) NY 44 Inf G Fredonia Fredonia, Louisa, IA G.A.R. Does anyone know what Mr. Mape's 1st name was???? _____________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Click here for FREE Internet Access and Email http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html
If you are dealing with Higginson, here's a "buyer beware". Many of the books they offer for sale are not the real books as you would expect to see them, but are photocopies of the books. If you are going to buy from them and it matters to you if you are getting a hardbound or a xerox, you should always ask them if it is a xerox copy. Also, be aware that sometimes the quality of the xerox copies in the past have not been the best. I had a couple of bad experiences with this company a few years back (in fact in one case I never DID get my money back or the book I ordered and they argue that they shipped it so they don't owe me the money) Other folks LOVE this company, so I'm just letting you know my personal experiences. > > > Dear Louisa Co. Regarding the Portrait and Biographical Album of Louisa County, Iowa (1889); it is a great book with a lot of history and genealogy, but it's poorly indexed. A complete, 83 page "everyname" index is available, however, from the Iowa Genealogical Society, PO Box 7735, Des Moines, IA 50322. My recollection is that the index costs about $10. You can probably find out more precisely on their web page. Dave Eckberg Highlands Ranch, Colorado "J,A, & M Schulz" wrote: > Dear Louisa Co. Deb, I need to make a correction in the E-mail I sent you January 17. The J. P. Patten, age 8, M, listed in the Huston Patten family in Columbus City Township, 1856 Census, should be J. P. PRICE. This might be the Pelec Price, age 28 in 1880, as ages are hard to read, and census' information is notoriously incorrect as far as ages are concerned. I happened to run across the Patten/Price marriage certificate while looking for something else--they were married in Joseph Brown's home. Also, I don't remember whether I ever sent the information I found in the cemetary book for Joseph Brown. Long Creek Cemetary: Brown, Joseph d. 1 Jan. 1866, 88 yrs. husb. of Diantha Brown, Diantha d, 1 Apr. 1856, 64 yrs., wife of Joseph. Jan
Angela, The Portrait and Biographical Album of Louisa County for 1889, lists Daniel and Mary Hill, in an article about William Wall. (page 301). Partially quoted as follows: "In 1874 Mr. Wall was again married, Elizabeth Hill becoming his wife. This lady is a native of Indiana, and a daughter of Daniel and Mary Hill, who were also natives of that State, but came to Iowa during the early days of its history. They located in Oakland Township, Louisa County, where Mr. Hill engaged in farming for some time. He then removed to Kansas, where he still resides. His wife died several years ago. By the second union of Mr. Wall, two children have been born--Maud and Ella." Also, Daniel Hill is mentioned in the biography of Adam Hill, as one of his children. The eight children of Adam Hill were: John, George W, Lucretia, Thomas, Chalmer, Daniel, Lorena, and Howard. I copied the pages and would be glad to send them to you, but it would have to be by regular mail, as I don't have a scanner, and the pages are quite a bit of typing. I'll check again on a Robinson/Robison family, but don't recall seeing anything in the P&G Bio. Re: Daniel Hill, Mary Elizabeth Robison marriage: I made a copy of the microfilm, but it was too dark to read very well. The original at the courthouse shows the "Miss" written over to change it to "Mrs" Mary Elizabeth Robinson. Also, the "n" is crossed through leaving it as Robison. They were married at the home of the bride. So it looks like your first idea is correct, this was the second marriage for her. However, I suppose she could have been Hiram Robinson's second wife. The children are too old to be hers, but it was not uncommon for a man to take a second wife many years younger. Jan -
Dear Louisa County List, I just found a website that is selling a book called "Portrait and Biographical Album of Louisa County for $67. Do any of you have this book? I am looking mainly for my HILL and ROBINSON families. If someone has this book, can you tell me if it has my families in it before I spend $67 for it. Thanks, Angela arsmms@kornet.net
Angela, The local library has a copy, as well as the library at the Historical Society. I'm going to the library in a few minutes to work on transcribing the 1856 census, so will take a look, and let you know if the Hill and Robinson families are listed. Jan
I don't have the book, but happen to know that my family is in it. Could you post the address of the website where it can be purchased? Thanks! Hello listers, I have been corresponding with a newly found cousin and a question of mutual interest has come up. One of my maternal gg grandmothers, Alice E. BENNINGTON (nee EDGINGTON) is buried in Cedar Bethal (or is it Bethel?) Cemetery. Where is this cemetery located? In Louisa County? She died in Columbus Junction. Her husband, Henry BENNINGTON, died in Letts. Would he be buried in the same cemetery? And the last question, how can I find out if Alice's grave is marked? Thanks in advance for any help that anyone may be able to give. And special thanks to Vicki Teel for connecting this cousin with me! Bless you! Best regards, Willa Griffin
