    3. Dear Janice, Patricia and LC list, I didn't see an initial query on the TEAS name. Family members were in Des Moines, Louisa, Henry and Washington counties, that I know of. There was more than one George Washington Teas. I have a collateral connection to the descendants of one of them, and have a little information I could share. The above is in reference to a George Washington and Lovey Teas, parents of Joseph Bartlett Teas, born 4 July 1800 in Tennessee, married Martha Morgan 13 June 1822 in Sangamon County, Illinois. I have names of their children and further descendants, if anyone is interested. 3. Dear Melissa, There are a lot of Louisa County people descended from this family, but I don't know how many are actively researching. There is a lot of information in the courthouse, libraries, Heritage Center, etc. I'll refer you to someone you may have been in contact with, a former postmaster in Morning Sun. He may be able to put you in contact with descendants--there are several Hamilton families in Louisa County, and relationships between them have not been established. Contact: Eugene Hamilton, 101 S Washington St., Morning Sun, IA 52646. Telephone # is 319-868-7902. Hope for the best! 2. Jim Cook
    3. Keith, thank you very much. That is the SARGENT family I am researching, although as usual with this family, some of the information conflicts with other records. Reson is my wife's gr grandfather. If this census information is correct, Abraham & Nancy were married in Louisa Co. in 1841 and had their first child there in 1844. They then moved to Indiana for five years or so and had their next three children there. Then came back to Louisa Co. in time for the 1850 census. With this family this is very possible, they moved across the state of Oregon about six times between 1858 and 1880. The John Adams family is also the one that I was looking for, although I haven't made the connection yet. I think that they may have been Nancy's parents. If they are, they also ended up in Oregon in 1852. Are there any earlier records that might give a clue as to when these families first arrived in Louisa County? As with most questions answered, more questions are asked. Thank you again. 3. Dear Jim, Yes, there is a published index of the 1850 Louisa County, Iowa, Federal Census, available through the Iowa Genealogical Society. In Residence # 122 Family # 123, in Grandview Township, is Jesse L. Adams, age 42, a farmer, born in Ohio. His wife is Sarah, age 36, also born in Ohio. Other household members, presumed children, are William, age 20, born Indiana; Martin F., 13, born Illinois; Melissa J., 10, born Illinois; John F., 8, born Illinois; Catharine, 5, born Illinois; and Jesse L., age 2, born Iowa. In Residence # 2, Family # 2, in Grandview Township, is John F. Adams, age 52, farmer, born North Carolina. His wife is Rebecca, age 45, born North Carolina. Children in household are Abraham H., 21, born Indiana; Jesse S., 19, born Indiana; Amelia, 15, born Indiana; John Q., 10, born Iowa; Rebecca S., age 7, born Iowa. In Residence # 174, Family # 175, in Grandview Township, is Joshua Adams, age 30, day laborer, birth state unknown; his presumed wife, Sarah, age 18, born Ohio. In Residence #89, Family # 90, in James Neel household, in Grandview Township, is Joshua Adams, age 34, born in Virginia; presumed wife is Sarah, age 20, born Ohio. These are the only Adams families listed in the county in the 1850 Federal Census index. In Residence # 14, Family # 14 in Grandview Township is the only Sargent family listed in this census for Louisa County. Abraham Sargent is 30, a cooper, born in Indiana. Nancy E. is 28, born in Indiana; John T. is 6, born in Iowa; Reson T., age 5, born in Indiana; Mary C., 3, born in Indiana; Oliver C., 10/12, born in Indiana. A Luther C. Cotingham, cooper, born in Indiana is also listed in this household. Hope this helps. Adam Alexander Butcher, my link, was born August 4, 1873, in Louisa County. His siblings were William, the oldest, b abt 1870, Ada b abt 1883, she never married, Margaret and Eva. William Sr died about 1883 when Adam was 10 years old. His mother supposedly remarried a retired Union soldier by the name of William Orr. At the time of her remarriage the grow children apparently lived in Conville, Iowa. I found a Harriet Orr listed in the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, index. It listed her age at time of death to be 78 years. I have not been able to find any information on William Butcher SR. I am not sure if he died prior to the birth of his last child Ada. 1. Re: GRISWOLD family--Misc. records
    2. Keith/Connie Street
    3. GRISWOLD family records Louisa County, Iowa Searched by Keith Street in April, 2000. The Census Records have not been searched by me for Louisa County Griswold family members, with the exception of the 1850 Federal Census. In that census, in Columbus City Township, Residence # 9 and Household # 9, is listed the family of Franklin Griswold, age 47, born in Connecticut, and a farmer by trade. His wife is Eliza, also listed as age 47 and born in Connecticut. The children listed are Grace, 17; Benjamin F, 15, both born in Connecticut. The remaining children, born in Iowa, are Edward O. and Edgar H., 13, listed as twins; Frances A., 10; Ira M., 6; and Virginia, 4. For those interested in this surname I would recommend searching the Federal and State censuses through 1925. I did search some of the Louisa County military censuses from 1862 onward. Franklin's children are mentioned, but he (head of household in the 1850 Federal Census in above paragraph) would not have been of military age and therefore is not listed. Ira is consistently listed from 1863 through 1880, first in Marshall Township and in 1871 and later in Elm Grove Township. Benjamin Franklin is listed in Marshall Township from 1865 through 1878. Edward (E. O.) first appears in Marshall Township in 1866 but soon disappears. In 1874 he appears in Columbus City Township, but again disappears after 1876. A son of Ira M., a M. Oliver Griswold, appears in Columbus City Township from 1879 through 1884. I did no searching after 1884. The Louisa County Genealogical Society has had only one person expressing interest in the Griswold surname in the past. The query then was from a Shirley Payton. She provided information about a Catherine Slaughter, daughter of Richard and Frances Slaughter, who first married John Payton and had children : (1) William Payton, born 1839 (2) Richard Payton, born 1840 (3) Frances Payton, born 1842, married Franklin Fowler (4) James M. Payton, born circa 1845, married Pauline Dix; (5) John W. Payton, born 1848. Catherine Slaughter Payton then married a second time to Ira M. Griswold and had one son, M. Oliver Griswold. I will place additional information in the GRISWOLD file about cemetery burials, obituaries, etc. Contact me by e-mail if you wish copies. From Marriage Records in Recorder's Office, Louisa County Courthouse, Wapello, Iowa. A-217 Marriage of Ira Griswold and Catherine Peyton. License was issued on March 9, 1852. Marriage occurred on April 11, 1852, at Catharine Payton home. Married by Joel C. Parsons. (Catherine/Catharine and Peyton/Payton spellings in original record.) D-19 Marriage of William Gambell and Frances Griswold.. License was issued on September 9, 1867. Marriage occurred on September 15, 1867.. William was listed as 21 or over; Frances was listed as age 18 or over. Marriage took place at the home of the bride's father, in Louisa County. by R. R. Riner, Minister of the Gospel. Edward Griswold, of Marshall Township, signed as knowing the couple. D-120 Marriage of William C. Webster and Virginia Griswold. License was issued on February 4, 1869; marriage occurred on February 7, 1869, at the Louisa County Courthouse. John L. Webster, of Louisa County, testified as to knowing the couple. D-185 Marriage of Ira M. Griswold and Mary Jane Urich. License was issued August 13, 1870; marriage occurred on August 23, 1870, at the Henry Murray house in Louisa County. Marriage was performed by Elder Henry Murray. Frederick Bates testified as to knowing the couple. G-95 Marriage of B. F. Griswold and Elizabeth Johnston. License was issued October 19, 1888; marriage occurred on October 23, 1888, at the J. B. Johnston home in Columbus City. Marriage was performed by Milford Tidball, Minister of the Gospel. B. Franklin Griswold was a farmer from near Cairo, in Marshall Township, age 52 at time of marriage, his first. He had been born in Connecticut, his father being Franklin Griswold and his mother Eliza Jane Chine. The bride, Elizabeth Johnston, was age 47 at the time of marriage and had been born in Ohio. The marriage was also her first, and she was the daughter of John Johnston and Mary Louisa Long. Prior to the marriage she had a Columbus City address. G-394 Marriage of James R. Rickey and Bertha G. Griswold. The license was issued on November 10, 1891; the marriage occurred on November 11, 1891, near Columbus Junction at the Edward Griswold home. James was 28 at the time of marriage and was a farmer living near Wyman, where he had been born, a son of Thomas and Maggie Rickey. Bertha was 21 at the time of marriage, had been born near Morning Sun, a daughter of Edward Griswold and Mary Cunningham. H-164 Marriage of John Henry Wilson and Virginia Avonia Griswold. The license was issued May 16, 1894, and the marriage occurred on May 16, 1894, near Columbus Junction. John was from West Liberty, where he had been born, and was age 26 at the time of marriage, a son of Matthias Wilson and Ruth Mosher. Virginia was from Columbus Junction, had been born near Wapello, was age 25 at the marriage, and was a daughter of Edward Griswold and Mary Cunningham. J. R. Rickey, of Louisa County, testified that he knew the couple. Keith/Connie Street ckcasey@netins.net 325 Franklin Ave, Wapello, IA 52653-1515 319-523-8164 -

    3. I am not sure how my name ever became connected to the surname Winters. I have been receiving e-mails and letters with no SASE enclosed enquiring about this name. I have done absolutely no research whatsoever on the name Winters. My husband's sister was married to a Winters, now deceased, whom we loved dearly, but I know none of his family and only met his sister and nieces briefly at his funeral.... His own sons by a previous marriage did not attend the funeral. To the best of my knowledge none of these folks ever lived in Louisa County and may live around the quad cities. I don't know anyone to refer you to as his widow and his unmarried son and daughter that are related to us aren't into genealogy. There are no grandchildren or descendants to help spike that interest. Norma Jennings

    1. Software for uploading files

    3. I just learned about an FTP program that is very easy for amateurs to use. In transferring another web site over to a new coordinator, she told me she was using FTP Explorer. With my curiosity aroused I ran the program down and tried it out in case I would need to help her loading or downloading. I doubt if I will ever have to use it for that purpose but it was a great learning experience. Normally, I use WS_FTP95 for uploading, but it may not be for everyone. For the subscribers who are considering having their own website or are having problems uploading to an existing one, I would like to let you know about this very easy to use program for those familiar with the Microsoft Explorer. It works very much like the software you are used to using. It is FTP Explorer, a shareware program that is free. The URL is: http://www.ftpx.com/ Norma Jennings Listowner of Ialouisa Mailing List
