    3. Steve: I would like you to see if you have any information on any of the Graves family during this time. I cannot prove who belonged to who, and maybe there are some answers here, I hope. Jesse Graves died 22 Oct 1857 and is buried in the Oakland/Carpenter cem. His wife is known only as Lucinda and she died 17 Feb 1856, also at Oakland/Carpenter. Francis Hill died 31 Jan 1860, Elizabeth d. 18 Feb 1871. I cannot find any background on any of these Grandparents. The other Graves are: Erastus; Sylvester; Electra; Delatus; Benoni; Elias; and Samuel. Benoni and Elias were both in the Civil War. Benoni married REBECCA and I have names of children MARY, MARTHA, MARVIN, ISOBELL, AMANDA and EVA. He married Elmira Day, 3 Mar 1865, and have children named: Anna Bell; Jennie Amelia: Laura Estella; Clara; Grace; Elma; Charlie; and John Wesley Graves. I really need proof of connections and hope you can find something for me. I want to thank you for any help and would be most appreciative of any ties you find for this group of relatives. Sincerely, Bj bjlarson@uswest.net -----Original Message----- From: Steve Harrison <raleighwood@juno.com> To: IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com <IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, April 29, 2000 11:16 AM Subject: Research assistance offer I have a microfilm of the "Muscatine Weekly Journal" on interlibrary. The roll contains August 1, 1857 thru December 28, 1860. While primarily Muscatine County news, there are some references to Louisa County citizens. There are brief announcements of marriages and deaths. I have the roll until May 14 and would be glad to look up a marriage or death for anyone. Please send a request to me by email with name and date (as specific as possible) of the person you are looking for. I did find the following interesting notice in the October 12, 1860 issue: Reuben C. Latta was killed in a landslide at his mining claim at Alpha, Nevada County, California. The remains were taken to his brother, R.W. Latta's home in Napa City. There father, James Latta, was a resident of Grandview at the time. [Anyone doing LATTA family research?] Steve Harrison P.O. 3. Carol Ann, Have you checked the 1905 Obituary abtracts from newspapers? If he died in Oakville, it could be in the Oakville Sentinel (1902-1945), or it could be in Wapello's papers. What name are you looking for? Jan

    3. Harlan, To answer your letter of April 16, 2000, to the Louisa County Genealogical Society. So far, I have not been able to find any information on the Pace and Ritchey names you mentioned. There are some Ritchey families, but not with the names you mentioned. Your other questions: Ainsworth is in Washington Co. The cemetary just east of Columbus Jct., is Fredonia Cemetary. It is listed in "Cemetaries of Louisa County". However, I checked the listing and did not find any Pace or Ritchie names. If I should find anything in the future, will let you know. Jan

    1. re:Lookups/Research
    2. Norma F. Jennings
    3. All of our local researchers are incredibly busy with requests piling up for them. I would like to urge all of you who have requested information to Louisa County to be patient. Again, I urge you to post your requests to the IALOUISA mailing list whenever possible instead of writing directly to one researcher. That way, someone else may pick up your request and find info for you. If you want to ask about fees or policies of the individual researchers, then you need to write directly to the researcher's e-mail address listed on our Lookup page. We can't post fees, etc on line so this needs to be handled privately. You will in all cases be expected to pay for photographs, documents, photocopying, etc. that can't be sent e-mail. Even if the researcher does not request payment, a reasonable donation is always appreciated as they go out of their way to help you and do a tremendous amount of work on the list that does not include any remuneration.. They do have unaccounted for expenses traveling to the library, courthouse, paper, stamps, etc. etc. If it were only one request they might be able to absorb the expenses, but your request is only one in hundreds of requests received in a year's time so don't take advantage of their generosity. While our data that is on line is all free according to Rootsweb policy, please do not ask people to do extensive research for you for nothing and remember you are only one of many of their clients so they can't devote full time to you alone. They courteously do the best that they can, but we all get turned off by a demanding party. As an example of what may be required to look up one single person's listing in a single book, I am including an example below of a poorly indexed book albeit there were two different indexes in it. Request for information on Priscilla Cummings b. 1767, d. September 10, 1837, Palmer, Hampden, MA. Priscilla married a SLATE, a MAGOON (Not sure what order) and lastly Samuel LEMON. She also went by the name Priscilla PEPPER at times. This was my reply: My research was basically unfruitful. I checked the index for Priscilla Cummings and found five listings in the index, p. 5, 15, 39, 57, 199. Page 5, no Priscilla, turned the page over to page 6, and found Priscilla b. October 1, 1689; d. Sept. 13, 1728 Page 15, no Priscilla, but on page 17 was a Priscilla, no data Page 39, no Priscilla, checked three pages forward and three pages backward and even tried 93 in the event numbers were transposed. Still no Priscilla Page 57, no Priscilla, checked three pages forward and three pages backward and 75 in event the numbers were transposed still no Priscilla. Page 199, no Priscilla, checked three pages forward and three pages backward and 189, 198 in event of a numerical typo, no Priscilla. Checked under collateral lines under persons who married Descendants of Isaac Cummings, in the event she was listed under one of her four married names, no Slate, or Magoon, or Lemon or Pepper surnames even found in this particular book. I do know that some lines are missing entirely from this book and more can be found on them on the Internet GenForum site. Since none of her married surnames are listed in the book in the spouses index, she apparently is not in the book, "Isaac Cummings of Ipswich and his Descendants, published in 1904. Isaac Cummings birth record was found in England, and I believe the Louisa County Cummings go back to a much later immigrant from Ireland during the 1800's so they would not be found in the Isaac Cummings book.. Many of these later Cummings are found buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun. Some info on this family is also in the card file in the Washington County, Iowa Genealogical Library but none of these would date back as early as 1765. http://www.genforum.com Type in the surname Cummings in the search engine to go to the Cummings pages. I'm sorry I couldn't produce Priscilla Cummings for you. Sincerely, Norma Jennings.

    3. Marilyn, Couldn't wait for the envelope to let you know that I was able to obtain a better copy of Charles' naturalization papers at the Clerk's office. I have also obtained copies of Thomas and Amanda's marriage certificate, and the death register entry for Catharine. Also, I copied marriage certificates for Thomas and Amanda's daughters, Mary Ethel Gallagher (m. George Mark Peters), and Katherine E. Gallagher (m. Mark M. Peters). The certificates for the daughters show a lot more information. Especially of interest, Katherine was born in Maryville, MO., ca. 1890, and Mary Ethel was born in Ringold Co., Iowa about 1881. I have not been able to find death information for Thomas and Amanda, except they are buried in Wapello cemetary. Perhaps they died in some other county??? or state? There are also some copies of an appointment of Charles as Thomas' guardian in 1856 (for a sale of land ), the original and final filing of Catherine's will. Do you want me to get a copy of Catherine's will? It might be several pages, but since it is not certified, the Clerk of Court charges only a minimal amount for photocopying. Eagerly awaiting your SASE, so I can mail all of this to you. This has been such fun! 2. Norma F. Jennings
    3. Connie: I found this piece on my computer that Eleanor wrote while we were working on the newspapers. I thought it was on line, but didn't take time to look as I am writing this off line right now. I might add that this project is NOW COMPLETE and we are no longer soliciting funds to purchase film. This piece is for information purposes only. MICROFILM PROJECT: LOUISA COUNTY NEWSPAPERS LOUISA COUNTY NEWSPAPERS The microfilming of all Louisa County newspapers is now complete, thanks to donations and the Historical Resource Development Grant we received. We have prepared, transported and returned over 120 years of county newspapers. Volunteers worked for three days rebinding them before replacement on the shelves. The Keck Memorial Library in Wapello has purchased a microfilm reader-printer. Rolls of the papers that were microfilmed a number of years ago were ordered to complete the collection of Wapello newspapers and census records. The rolls were listed for memorial donation and the Louisa County Genealogical Society issued a challenge to individuals and organizations; that the Society would match all donations and purchase one roll of film for each roll donated. The collection is now complete and available for use in the new Family History Section of the Keck Memorial Library. The Morning Sun Library also has microfilm copies of the Morning Sun newspapers and a reader, but no printer. The Columbus Jct. Library has what Columbus Junction newspapers are available and has only the reader. There are 228 rolls of film available in Wapello. Following is the list of publications with the number of rolls in parentheses. Some rolls contain papers from more than one city, so this is only an approximate list. Columbus Junction: Safeguard (23), Enterprise (2), Non Pareil (2), Herald (1), Iowa People (1), Union Farmer (2) Gazette (49) Letts: Record (5) Louisa County: Times (5), Record (3), Democrat (1) Oakville: Sentinel (16) Morning Sun: Herald (6), News (1), News-Herald (37) Wapello: Intelligencer (1), Tribune (12), Republican (50) Iowa Census Records: (11) Everyone in the Louisa County Genealogical Society who attends meetings on a regular basis participated in this project in one way or another. This is teamwork at its best and it produced an end product that we can all feel good about. OTHER MICROFILMED RECORDS Fifty-two rolls of Louisa County records have been discovered in a catalog listing from the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. These records were filmed a few years ago by a Latter Day Saints crew who came to the courthouse in Wapello to do the work on site. They now hold the master filmed copies of these records. The Genealogy Sociey, the Historical Society and Keck Memorial Library have begun raising funds to purchase the microfilm of these records to place in Keck Memorial Library in Wapello. The cost for each roll will be $25.08 through Crest Technologies for a total of $1304.15. The Wapello United Fund Committee has supported this community investment with a $650 donation! This will cover half of the cost. The remaining cost will be collected through memorial s and donations. When all funds are in hand, the films will be ordered. Donations or memorials will have a commemorative sticker with the donor and/or deceased person's name inscribed, as was done in the newspaper project. The following Louisa County records are included in these 52 rolls of film. Marriage records 1842-1910; Probate records 1838-1881; Wills 1854-1905; Land records 1839-1901; Deeds 1839-1884; Births 1880-1910; Deaths 1880-1910; Naturalization 1839-1899; Genealogical recors- some cemetery records, some church records. LOUISA COUNTY MILITIA RECORDS A new microfilm is available at the Columbus Junction, Morning Sun and Wapello Libraries. The Louisa County Genealogical Society procured the film and paid half of the costs. The film lists, usually alphabetically by township, the men living here who were of military age. The age is usually given, and sometimes the occupation, also. The lists were usually prepared every two years from 1862 through 1908, but it is sometimes hard to tell what year you are in. This allows you to trace the residency of these men during these years and help pinpoint the year they may have died or left the county. The film is not complete for all years, does contain errors and contradictory information, and is time consuming to use. It may, however, provide the only documentation that your ancestor was here in a particular year. 3. JD, and Louisa Co. List, I found most of the information you requested below and made copies of the following: Fern Marie Barrick Deihl, obit, 1980. (While searching for another, I found the marriage announcement of Fern Barrick, and S. J. Deihl. 1916). Charles Gottlieb Blankenhorn, obit, 1951. Merritt J.Deihl, obit, 1935. Clarissa Amanda Brogan Deihl, obit, 1916. Francis (Fannie) Gipple Wagner, obit 1915. Eliza Jane Van Horn Brogan, obit, 1912, (and transcript.) Gottlieb Blankenhorn, obit, July 1893. Margaret Jamison Deihl, obit July 13, 1893. I was unable to locate obituaries for Jesse Wagner, (1903) and John Deihl, (1878), but did find information on them in the Louisa County Portrait and Biographical Album, which I also copied. In addition, the family of George R. Deihl, is included in the History of Louisa County. (1914). List, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe there is a "Deihl family history" available at the History Library? I spent an hour locating this information, and spent $4.50 in photocopying fees. I am sending the above copies, with a brochure about the Louisa County Genealogical Society. 3. Keith, Patricia and LC list, Patricia's initial inquiry was received April 13th. I had sent obituary information to Ed Gentzler, and in the obit, the name "Rev. G. W Teas" was included. I'm glad to hear you have some information on the Teas family, as I haven't been able to find much. In Churches of Louisa County, I found a brief reference to G. W. Teas, as mentioned in "conference minutes...1854". The 1840 Iowa Territorial Census Index, lists" Teas, G. W., Esq. pg. 211, Henry Co., IA Teas, J. B. , Esq. pg. 227, Henry Co., IA Teas, John, pg 601, Washington Co., IA Teas, John W., pg. 601, Washington Co. IA Jan
