She was the last surviving member of the first graduating class of the Winfield high school. Grace Emma Pierce, daughter of L. B. and Leah Bandy Pierce, was born at Manhattan, Kansas, on February 7, 1868. The family settled in Winfield in 1862, and on December 16, 1892. She was married to William H. Price, who died June 23, 1946. Mrs. Price was the oldest living member of the Winfield Presbyterian Church, and was a charter member of the Winfield PEO chapter. She was also a member of the OES and the White Shrine, and had served for many years as a member of the Winfield Library Board. Surviving are a son and a daughter: William Harold Price, Westfield, New Jersey and Mrs. Louise Scott, New Orleans, and a sister, Mrs. Kate Baker of Wapello. Four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. A sister died previously. Last rites were held at the Barton funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial was in Winfield Scott Township Cemetery.

Martie was a graduate of the Burlington High School. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed crafts and decorating. She enjoyed golf and was a member of the Indian Hills Golf and Country Club. Survivors include three sons, Larry and Mark Minnis, both of Morning Sun and Mike Minnis of Madison, Wis.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Springsteen of Morning Sun and Sue Brown of Burlington. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, infant John, Wendell and Earl. The funeral service for Martie Minnis was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun with the Rev. Chris Thomas officiating. Visitation was from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at Grace United Church of Christ. A memorial service was held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Church of Christ. The Rev. Rick Crooks officiated. Burial was in the Conesville Cemetery. Following the services a time of food and fellowship was held at the Conesville Community Center. A memorial was established at the funeral home in Kelly's name. Arrangements were by the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Kelly was born December 21, 1943, in Del Rio, Texas, the son of Prajedis G. Zuniga Sr. and Maria de la luz Gonzales. On May 20 2, 1966, Kelly was united in marriage to Rachel Dominguez. He was a lifelong resident of Conesville. He worked for the Rath Packing Plant for many years. He then worked at Oral-B in Iowa City, until his retirement. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for several years in Conesville. Kelly had a great sense of family, his children and grandchildren always came first. He enjoyed raising chickens, watching NASCAR, spending time with his grandchildren and having coffee with the neighbor. Kelly will be dearly missed by his wife, Rachel of Conesville; four sons, Kelly Zuniga III and special friend Lisa Garrison of Conesville, Eddie Zuniga and his wife Denise of Iowa City, Telly Zuniga and his wife Carol of Columbus Junction and Dan Zuniga of Columbus Junction; one step-brother, Tony Gonzalez and his wife Robyn of Iowa City; seven grandchildren, Tony, Ceci, Bailee, Rylee, Viri, Dante and Gabriel; seven brothers and sisters-in-law; and special nieces and nephews, Anita Valenzuela, Joe Salas, Rosie Watkins, Dora Roush and Janie Holmes. She retired as the school cook in 1987 from the Wapello Community School District. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Wapello and a charter member of the TOPS at Wapello. She enjoyed her grandchildren's sports and school events as well as reading, baking, and flowers. She received her bachelor's degree in 1964 from Iowa Wesleyan College. She was a fifth grade teacher for 30 years for the Wapello School District. She retired in 1978. Prior to teaching, she and her husband operated the Shell gas station and the HiWay Pantry in Wapello. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello, Chapter ET, P.E.O., Louisa County Retired Teachers Association, and a life member of the NEA. She loved playing bridge, flowers, watching and feeding birds, cooking, and reading. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Jean & Donald Williams of Wapello; her son, Michael Carl & Janet McChesney of Fairview, Texas; five grandchildren, Jennifer & Greg Rose, Amanda & Nick Brown, Keeley McChesney, Beth Belger, and Audra & Cameron Parker; four great-grandchildren, Riley, Lillian, Eleanor, and Corwin Michael Brown; and her sister, Ethel Askren of Wapello. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; an infant daughter, Judith Lee; a sister, Barbara Jordan; and a brother, Donald Murray. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Mediterranean Theatre. Jim was a farmer. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Sperry, Iowa, the WBCCI (an international airstream trailer group), and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He enjoyed flying and scuba diving. Earlier he had farmed, operated the Shell Station at Wapello and as family owned and operated the Grandview Service and the Grandview Country Cafe. John was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Masons at Ainsworth and Washington, the KAABA Shrine at Washington, the I.O.O.F. at Wapello, the Crappie Masters, Crappie USA, Crappie Unlimited, CAST, and Pheasants Forever. He had been a little league coach, enjoyed auctions, hunting, woodworking, and playing cards. His life and activities were always centered about his family. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his mother, Margaret 'Peg' Schantz of Wapello; six children, a daughter, Cindy & Mike Singleton of Wapello, a son, Greg & Cathy Greiner of Wapello, a daughter, Jeanne & Rod Fry of Winterville, Georgia, a daughter, Chris Spate of Belvidere, Illinois, a daughter, Julie Rich of Columbia, Missouri, and a son, John, Jr. & JoEllen Schantz of Wapello; his sixteen grandchildren; a brother, Don & Mary Schantz of Ainsworth; and a sister, Judy & John Grover of Washington. He was preceded in death by his father. The funeral ceremony for John Schantz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m.Friday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 5:45 p.m. by the Washington Lodge. A Memorial Fund has been established.

Mrs. William Dayton pased away on Wednesday morning at her home north of Bard. Although in poor health for a year or more, death came suddenly as she and her husband were preparing for breakfast. Mrs. Dayton, whose maiden name was Nellie Keever, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Keever, and a sister of Bert Keever of Wapello. She is survived by her parents, two brothers, one sister and the husband. We hope to give a complete obituary next week. Funeral services will be held from the late home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by J.R. Hammond, and interment made in the Wapello Cemetery.

A message from Grand Junction, Colo., announces the death of B.F. Bain, a former resident of the county who succumbed to a week's serious illness following a year of declinging health. Surviving are his widow, seven children, four sons, and three daughters all married; one brohter William of __ Idaho: one sister, Mrs. Della Adams, of Oakville. Mr. Bain was born in Janesville, Ohio, about 73 years ago.
