Farmer, a former prominent Wapello citizen who owned and managed the Farmer Canning company here, died suddenly at Tucson, Ariz, according to word received here. Mr. Farmer's death, which occurred Tuesday morning, was attributed to a blood clot. Mr. Farmer left Wapello several years ago and had been making his home at Story City, Ia. He had spent the winter in Arizona. Survivors include a son, Verdon LeRoy Farmer. The body will be returned to Story City for final rites and burial. unknown newspaper

Mrs Gray was born near Centerville, Iowa, on November 21, 1857, the daughter of Alfred R. and Mary E. (Gunter) Dawdy. Her earlier years were spent in Illinois, coming to Louisa County with her parents in 1875, where she taught school for several years. On November 22, 1877, she was united in marriage to James Edward Gray. They set up housekeeping at Evergreen Farms, where she resided until her death. At the age of 16, Mrs. Gray united in membership with the Christian Church. She was of the sturdy pioneer stock that settled this state and country and she was true to the courage and high ideals that caused them to lay excellent foundations for the generations to come. Her interests were wide and she maintained a strong hold on life until the very last. Because of the many interests that held her attention and the duties to which she was devoted, it can be well said of her that she was not yet ready to go. As a mother, she was very devoted to her home and family, and as a neighbor, she was beloved by everyone. The passing of Mrs. Gray leaves a great vacancy in her home, neighborhood and commnity. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edith Pierce of Evergreen Farm and five grandchildren: Mrs. Harold R. Piercy of Burlington, James G. Pierce of Des Moines, Robert E. Pierce of Columbus Junction, Mrs. S. Emerson Best of Berkeley, California, and Mrs, Jesse Rea Calvert II, of Grants Pass, Oregon. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren. In addition to the above-named close relatives who will mourn her passing are two sisters-in-law, a number of nieces and nephews and a whole host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband who died in August, 1923, and one daughter, Ethel in infancy and one son, Chester Earl, who died September 19, 1944. Services for Mrs. Gray were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edith Pierce, at Evergreen Farm, at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 8. The last rites were in charge of Rev. E.C. Sears, pastor of the Methodist Church. Mrs, Mildred Jones was pianist and Wendell Morgan soloist, sang "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Abide With Me." The floral tributes were vey profuse and beautiful and were in charge of Mrs. E.W. McWilliams, Mrs. Raymond Lewis and Mrs. Edgar Fortune. Casket bearers were: R.J. Peters, A.R. Wrede, J.D. Helmick, Stephen Hawkins, Walter Marsden and James L. Edwards. Interment was in the Columbus City Cemetery. Among those in attendance from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Toms and Mr. and Mrs. David Williams of Mr. Pleasant; Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Niccolls, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Bozman, Richard and Roger, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mewhirter, L.R. Mrs. Harold Davison, 66, well-known Wapello resident died of a heart attack at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Restopia Nursing Home in Columbus Junction. The former Mary Esther "Mayme" Murphy was born March 31, 1884, at New Boston, Ill., the daughter of Thomas E. and Alice Belle Murry Murphy. She came to Wapello from New Boston in 1904 and taught in the rural schools of Louisa County for five or six years. She was married to Harold Davison in Wapello on June 24, 1908. Mrs. Davison was an active member of the Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, in which she was a past matron, of the Tarry Awhile Club and of the Rebekahs, of which she was a past noble grand. She also belonged to many other organizations in which she held offices. Survivors include her husband and one brother, Roy E. Murphy of Burlington. Her parents, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Wapello with the Rev. L.E. Tinker, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Wapello cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of the Dudgeon Funeral Home.

Farrie Gast, 80, of Grandview, long-time resident of Louisa County, died at Hershey Hospital in Muscatine at 2:10 a.m. Friday. Death resulted from complications, following an operation. Mr. Gast, son of Herman and Sarah Stineman Gast, was born a half mile east of Grandview Feb. 17, 1870. Much of his early boyhood was spent as a helper in his grandfather's grist mill. He attended the Grandview school and at the age of 15 began his career as a wage earner, but later completed his education at Brown's Business College at Muscatine, and became the owner and operator of a general store at Grandview. He married Margaret Kallenberger Jan. 6, 1898, at Grandview, and two years later the couple purchased a farm three miles east of Grandview, where he lived until his retirement. He was a member of the Brethrer Church. Surviving are his wife; four children, Dan Gast and Mae Gast and Mrs. Howard Cocklin, all of Grandview, and Floyd of Burbank, Calif.; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The body is at the Ross Dugeon Funeral Home in Wapello and will be taken to the family home in Grandview late Saturday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted from the Grandview Community Church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery.

Williams, a well-known trap shooter, operated an oil businee at Oakville for many years before moving to Grinnell. He died Aug 1, 1944. Mrs. Williams is survived by her mother, Mrs. E.J. Woodburn, a resident of the Holland nursing home at Mount Pleasant, and a brother and four sisters; John Boden, West Liberty; Mrs. Lorena Martin, Mount Pleasant; Mrs. Edna Paxton, Wapello; Mrs. Letha Hale, Columbus Junction, and Mrs. Mina Creelman, of Mediapolis. Pease was the son of Henry and Fernanda Jackson Pease, and was born April 14, 1866. He was married to Clara Archibald on Sept. 24, 1902. They were married at Wapello. Mrs. Pease survives, as do a son, Sharon Pease, Phoenix, Ariz., a musician and writer on music subjects who is the author of the piano column in Down Beat magazine, and a daughter, Mrs. Lola Murray, of Mediapolis. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Henrietta Kemp, St. Petersburg, Fla., and two grandchildren. The body is at the Dudgeon funeral home. WAPELLO BUILDER TAKEN BY DEATH Services Held Friday Harry O. Pease, 89, retired architect and contractor, died at his home Tuesday, February 28, at 11:30 p.m. following a lengthy illness. Mr. Pease was a lifelong resident of Wapello. He was born in Wapello April 14, 1866, the son of Henry and Fernanda Jackson Pease. On Sept 24, 1902, he was united in marriage with Clara Archibald in Wapello. Mr. Pease is survived by his widow, two children, Sharon Pease of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Lola Murray of Mediapolis; a sister, Mrs. Henrietta Kemp, St. Petersburg Fla., and two grandchildren, Mrs. Eleanor Stone and Sharon Murray. There are five greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Eugene H. Pease. Mr. Pease was a member of Wapello Lodge No. 5, AF&AM. Services were held at the Dudgeon Funeral Home Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Rev. Floyd L. Shepherd officiated, and music was by Mrs. Phyllis McCulley at the organ. Flowers were in charge of Grace Bayne and Vira Sheafor. Members of the local Masonic lodge attended the services in a body. Members of the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department were honorary and active pallbearers. Casket bearers were Fred Brown, Bob Perryman, George DeVore, Doug Langstaff, Everett Webb and Robert Fletcher. One of my big brick walls is William Booth Smith who later moved to Keokuk, Lancaster, KS. William has become a mystery after about 1855. Pine, a highly respected resident of this community for many years, died at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday evening, February 11, 1959 at Bellevue Hospital in Muscatine where she had been taken the previous afternoon. Mary Eveline Skipton, daughter of Joseph and Eliza Skipton was born in Iowa, April 7, 1870 and was aged 89 years, 10 months and 4 days. There were two daughters and two sons in the family. While still a small girl she came to Iowa with her parents and they settled on a portion of land where the town of Ainsworth now stands. Later the family moved to other farms in the vacinity of Columbus Junction. She was united in marriagea to Alex F. Pine, May 31, 1887. They lived on many different farms in Union township and on one near Conesville until 1906 when they purchased the Col. John W. Garner property in Columbus City. Mr. Pine farmed until he decided to quit farming and they purchesed the Bent property, a nearby home where they lived the remainder of their lives. Mr. Pine died February 24, 1945. She is survived by the following children: Earnest A. Pine, William T. Pine, Harold L. Pine of Columbus Junction; Gertrude May Spaethe, Eldon, Iowa; Walter L. Pine, Knoxville, Iowa; Herbert H. Pine, Caney, Kansas; Virginia Jane Cutkomp, Davenport; Dimple Dolly Shearer, Portland, Oregon; Helen Aletha Lewis, Waterloo, Iowa. She is also survived by 33 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Ethel Grace Schahilion and one son, Floyd J. Pine preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at the Stary Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. George Thorp of Davenport. Organist was Mrs. B.O. Roundy, Soloist was Mrs. Kathryn Bright, who sang "Rose of Sharon" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Skipto DATE: 2/21/2009 at 21:37:41 Surnames: BURKS,DEVORE,SKIPTON,PINE Mrs. Samuel Burks, one of the pioneers of this community, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs, Alex Pine, at 8:00 Sunday morning. Eliza Jane Devore, daughter of William and Elizabeth Massie Devore, was born in Cumberland County, Ohio, April 30, 1845. She was united in marriage to Joseph Skipton November 20, 1862 and several years later they came by steamboat to Muscatine and then to Louisa County which has since been her home. To this union four children were born, two of whom survive to mourn her death, Mrs. Alex Pine and Harvey H. Skipton, both of Columbus City. Two preceded her in death, William Skipton of Fredonia and Mrs. Laura Rickby of Washington State. Mr. Skipton died in February 1883. In 1890 she was united in marriage to Samuel Burks and to this union one daughter, Norma, was born who died July 1, 1908. Mr. Burks passed away December 15, 1936. Mrs. Burks united with the United Brethren church in early life. She was devoted to her home and was a kind and loving mother and will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends. Besides the two children named above, she is survived by 21 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alex Pine, conducted by the Rev. C. S. Ramsdale. He was born November 29, 1894, the son of William and Hannah Adams Skipton. Mr. Skipton was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the American Legion. He had worked as an electrician. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Nettie VanDyke of Muscatine and Mrs. Mary Carlisle of Columbus Junction and several Nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Hasel officiating. Miss Donna Belle Hughes was organist. Casket bearers were Richard Pugh, Everett Henson, Ralph Snyder, Arthur Soloman, Gene Duncan and Randy Griffin. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, August 17, at the Columbus City Cemetery. Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Rev. Tom Woodin officiated. Casket bearers were Kenneth Petersw, Jerry Williams, Marvin Kistler and Richard Hills. Mary Carlisle was born December 1, 1896, at Fredonia, to William and Hannah Adams Skipton. She married Dean Carlise on March 16, 1914, in Columbus Junction. He died on March 27, 1966. She had worked as a food processor at Columbus Canning. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Griffin, and Lorraine Colbert, both of Columbus Junction; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Carl; and two sisters, Nettie VanDyke and Mabel Hannan. A general memorial has been established.

Born Oct. 21, 1888 in Fredonia, she was the daughter of William and Hannah Adams Skipton. Her marriage to Scott W. VanDyke took place March 7, 1906 in Fredonia. Survivors include one son, Albert of Muscatine, eight grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Mary Carlisle of Columbus Junction, also survives. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, one sister and two brothers.

Skipton, a well known and longtime resident of this community died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 1956 at University Hospital in Iowa City, where he had been a patient less than one week. Harvey Homer Skipton, son of Joseph and Eliza Jane Skipton, was born May 19, 1867 in Washington County, Iowa and aged 89 years, 2 months, and three days. Early in life he came to Louisa County. He was united in marriage to Edith May Boulton, October 25, 1899 and engaged for many years in farming, painting and decorating. He attended the Dixie Free Methodist Church throughout the years. He is survived by his wife and faithful companion and by two sons, Cecil Skipton of Columbus City and Roy Skipton of Chicago and by one daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Orris of Columbus City. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Evaline Pine of Columbus City and by twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews besides a host of more distant relatives and many friends. One son Frank, preceded him in death, also one sister and one brother. Funeral services were held at the Dixie Free Methodist Church at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Walter Vander Linden. Music was by Mrs. Opal Colton and Rev. Charles Keller. Flower attendants were Mrs. Walter Lucas and Mrs. Edwin Ford. Casket bearer were Clarence Skipton, Ernest Skipton, Harold Skipton, Robert Skipton, Lewis Skipton and Leonard Skipton. Burial in the Columbus City cemetery under the direction of the Stephens Funeral Home.

Gelatt has passed away at her late home in Highland Park near Los Angeles, Co. [sic]. on Saturday night, July 22. Interment took place there Tuesday. Mrs. [sic] Amelia A. Gould was born at Burton, Ohio, July 1, 1861. She was united in marriage to Homer H. Barnes, and in 1877 they came to Columbus Junction. Mrs. Gelatt was twice married. Her second husband being Hubert H. Gelatt of this place, who preceded her in death about 8 years. Mrs. Gelatt was the owner of the Safeguard block until a short time ago when she sold it. She at one time owned a great deal of property here. About four years ago she left Columbus Junction and bought a home in California. Skipton, one of the last known men of Fredona who had followed the trade of painting and paper hanging in this community for many years, died at his home in Fredonia at 8:30 Saturday morning following an illness of five weeks. William Harwood Skipton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Skipton, was born in Washington County, Ohio, February 5th, 1864 and came to Iowa by steamboat in 1866. He has since made this state his home. He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Adams, October 11, 1887 and to this union five children were born all of whom with his wife survive to mourn his death. These children are: Mrs. Nettie VanDyke and Mrs. Mable Hannan of Muscatine; Joseph Skipton of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Mary Carlisle of Columbus Junction and Carl at home. He is also survived by his aged mother, Mrs. Sam Burks and ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Alex Pine and one brother, H. H. Skipton of this community. Mr. Skipton was known and esteemed by a wide circle of friends and enjoyed the confidence of a large circle of patrons. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Fredonia at two o'clock Monday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Morris C. Dickey. The pall bearers were six nephews: Frank and Cecil Skipton and Floyd, Ernie, Ralph and Raymond Pine. Interment was made in the cemetery at Columbus City. Among those in attendance from out of town were: Mr. Martin Adams, Mrs Harry Ebert and daughter, Harriet, Mrs. Leonard Ferris and Mr. Cinir Ebert, all of Boscobel, Wisconsin; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Carpenter of Muscatine, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Skipton and family of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Albert VanDyke of Muscatine, Iowa; Mr. Chas. VanDyke of Moline; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wolford of Conesville.
