She was born May 20, 1928, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Verne and Harriet Pangborn Thomas. On April 28, 1946, she married Malcolm E. Baird in Cairo. He preceded her in death on September 18, 1996. She graduated from Wapello High School in 1945. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, The Prebyterian Women and, for many years, the Explorer Mariners. She also was a member of P.E.O. Chapter NI of Burlington and the Burlington Women's club. She enjoyed reading; playing games, especially bridge; and traveling. She is survived by four daughters, Candy Stineman of Winfield, Phyllis Baird of Denver, Becky Wear of Burlington and Jennifer Reynolds of Davenport; one son, Kevin Baird of Denver; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Hazel Storm of Pittsburg, Kan., Janet Aldrich of Cedar Rapids, and Judy Bunney of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Glen and Lyle. The funeral for her was held on Monday, January 31, 2005 at the First Prebyterian Church in Burlington. The Rev. Forrest Krummel officiated. Burial was in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlibngton. A memorial has been established for the First Presbyterian Church and the Alzheimer's Association. He surved in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Hospital Corpsman and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1959 after 20 years of service. He farmed in the Muscatine area for more than 25 years and served on the Muscatine County Board of Supervisors for four years. Betty Lou Allen, 74, of Letts, Iowa, died February 27, 2001, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine, Iowa. Betty Lou Erhardt was born May 23, 1926, in Mishawka, Indiana, the daughter of Norman and Iva Hartman Erhardt. Following her parents' divorce, her mother married Vernon Dale, who raised Betty. Betty married Wayne Allen on October 11, 1946, in Gladbrook, Iowa. Betty had been a homemaker all her life. She raised horses and belonged to and rode with several saddle clubs. Survivors include her husband, Wayne, Letts; two daughters, Sherry Fults and her husband, Paul, Muscatine, and Karen Koppe and her husband, Jeff, Letts; and a son, Rodney and his wife, Rhea, of Nichols. There are four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, 4-7 p.m., at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, with the family present. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial in the Letts Cemetery. A memorial has been established at the funeral home for the American Diabetes Association.

Henry Burdette Allen, 81, formerly of Burlington and rural Morning Sun, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Integrated Health Services at Mediapolis. Henry Burdette Allen was the son of Henry and Hallie Hooper Allen, born Feburary 9, 1919, near Winfield. He married Melba G. Wykert on February 14, 1947, at Burlington. Henry was a graduate of Winfield High School and served in the US Army during WW-II. He was of the Methodist faith, had served as the Marshall Township Clerk, and was the caretaker of the Cairo Cemetery for several years. Henry was a farmer and also a rural mail carrier for Winfield for several years. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening, especially working with flowers. Survivors include his wife, Melba, of Burlington; a son, Jerre Allen of Oakville; five nieces; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John; and a brother, Jack. A graveside service was held Monday at the Cairo Cemetery, with Rev. John Gaulke officiating. The body was cremated. The Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Mediapolis has provided the care and arrangements.

She moved with her parents to Columbus Junction in early girlhood. She was united in marriage to James Allen, May 21, 1916, who preceded her in death Dec 7, ????. She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Allen of Iowa City, and one son, James Allen of Columbus Junction. One brother, Halle H. Hanft, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Stacy Funeral Home and were conducted by the Rev. Hubert Sunderman. Music was by Miss Donna Belle Hughes. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Muscatine where she taught a Sunday School class for 40 years, was superintendent of the Home Department for 49 years and a helper in that department for one year, member of various church organizations and the WCTU. Survivors are a twin sister, Mrs. Bertha Dickinson of Letts and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, four brothers and her parents. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. May 15 at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home in Muscatine with Dr. J. Henry Teele officiating. Mrs. Floyd Scott was organist.
