Burial was in the Cambrian Cemetery. Visitation was Friday at the funeral home with the family present from 3 - 8 p.m. Masonic Rites were held at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Hayden died at his residence on Wednesday. A memorial has been established at the funeral home. John Hayden Davis was born May l, l9l5 in Cotter, Iowa, to John and Anna Griffith Davis. He married Elizabeth Arline Lyle, June 8, 1939, in Indianola, Iowa. Hayden had been a lifelong farmer in the Columbus Junction area and the owner and operator of Davis Trucking Service. Hayden was a member of the Columbus City Masonic Lodge #107 A.F. & A.M. the Davenport Consistory, Kaaba Shrine and President of the Crazy Ford Unit. Hayden was a member of the Cotter Presbyterian Church and past Elder and Trustee. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Columbus Junction State Bank. Hayden was an avid bicyclist and had ridden on RAGBRAI for the last l0 years. Hayden had also served on the Cotter School Board and was a member of the Louisa County Pork Producers, the Louisa County Cattlemen Association and the Louisa County Beef Producers. Hayden is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Thomas(Bette A) Harris, Jr., Yorkville, Illinois. There is one granddaughter, Mrs. Hunnando (Shea L.) Brim, Aurora, Illinois, and 2 great-grandchildren, Shaylyn and Hunnando T. Brim. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Plett, and a brother, Burdette Davis and his wife Anita; two nephews, Bob and Lori Davis, Columbus Junction and Dr. Randy and Cindy Davis, Dallas Texas. He was a 1924 graduate of the University of Iowa. He was a principal and teacher at Morning Sun from 1926 until 1929, superintendent of schools at Conesville from 1929 until 1947, and at Wyman from 1948 until 1951. He was a member of the Columbus City Lodge No. 107, A.F. & A.M. Surviving are three sons, Clyde Crawford and James Crawford, both of Columbus Junction, and Daniel Crawford, Columbus, Ohio; a half brother, Harry Cooper, Pensacola, Fla.; three half sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Wieser and Mrs. Iona Francis, both of Waterloo, and Mrs. Noma Ramos, Riverside, Calif.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The service for Mr. Crawford will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, with the Rev. Denley Ganfield officiating. Burial will be in Oregon Township Cemetery.

She then married Henry Bruce April 6, 1942. He died Jan. 1, 1963. She had been employed as a banking clerk in Pennsylvania. She was employed as a state capital employee in Harrisburg. Pa., and as an assistant with the certified public accounting firm of Bruce and Bruce, Harrisburg, Pa. She was a 60 year member of the First Church of God, Harrisburg, Pa., and a member of the Y's Menettes, the WCSC and the First Presbyterian Church, Morning Sun. Shelley Dotson is survived by her one month old daughter, Kayla Michelle; her parents, Delbert and Linda Dotson of Wapello; her brother Michael Dotson and his fiance, Sherrie Kimball of Morning Sun; a longtime friend John Richardson of Morning Sun; grandparents, Lora and Sam Wayne Dotson of Wapello; great-grandmothers, Gertrude Dotson of Des Moines and Emeline Lee of Centerville; aunts and uncles, Jeanie and Walter Kaszubski of Orland Park, Illinois and JoAnn and Dave Wehmeyer of Conesville; five cousins; and several great aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Ronald Elliott and grandmother Mary dotson. The funeral service for Shelley Dotson was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 1992, at the First Presbyterian Church at Wapello, with Rev. Bill Young officiating. Betty McChesney provided the organ music. Special taped music included 'Unanswered Prayers' by Garth Brooks, 'Angels' by Amy Grant, and 'How Great Thou Art' by Elvis Presley. The casket bearers were Reed Dowell, Ross Dowell, Lee Lundvall, Craig Schoonover, Kerry Kline and Jesse Stamper. Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery. She was born September 28, 1914 at Columbus Junction, Iowa, the daughter of Scott and Maude George Blankenhorn. She married Keith B. Hiller on May 27, 1939 at the home of her parents in rural Columbus Junction. She was a graduate of Columbus Community High School and also attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She was then a teacher in the Louisa County Country School System and then taught at Wyman School. Along with being a homemaker, she worked for 20 years at the Wapello Sale Barn Cafe. Martha Hiller was an active member of the Wapello United Methodist Church incliding being a Sunday School teacher and also holding offices in the United Methodist Women both locally and in the district. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #257 of Wapello, the Louisa County Farm Bureau Women, the Oakland Socal Club, the Otter Creek Women's Club, the Louisa County Health Board, and for several years active as 4-H Club Leader. Survivors include her husband, Keith; four children, Dr. Larry K. Hiller of Pullman, Washington, Shirley M. Eyers of Montrose, Iowa, Sandra K. Lippincott of Ft. Madison, Iowa, and Steven L. Hiller of Chanhassen, Minnesota; thirteen grnadchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Bennett of Columbus Junction and Mary Darlene Burgraff of West Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, Max Blankenhorn of Mesa, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Forrest Blankenhorn. Funeral service for Martha Hiller was held at the United Methodist Church at Wapello at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 16, 1991. Rev. Ed Philgreen officiated. Music was provided by Elsie Stephens as organist. Casket bearers included Howard Gieselman, Warren Kemper, Jack Samuels, Lee Harris, John Hayes and Jim Justice. Flower attendants were Shirley Kemper and Shirley Samuels. Honorary attendants were Gib Marshall, Gene Hamilton, Dorothy Gieselman, Ruth Fletcher, Pauline Humiston, Lois Hamilton and Exxa Harris. The burial followed at Parsons Cemetery. An Order of Eastern Star service was held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home. The family met with friends following the O.E.S. service. A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church at Wapello.

Barnes, 94, died Sept. 6, 1991 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. He was born Feb. 1, 1897 at What Cheer, to Joseph Vore and Antoinette Sale Barnes. He graduated from Wapello High School in 1917 and began working for the Rock Island Railway. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1918 and serving in France. Returning home in May 1919. He then resumed working for the railway. On Nov. 25, 1919 he was united in marriage to Ella Mildred Drake at Kansas City, Mo. In 1924 he was appointed Postmaster at Wapello and continued in that capicity until July 1, 1936, when he began working as assistant cashier at the State Bandk of Wapello. He remained with this position until moving to Keswick in 1945 as ass't cashier of 1st Truct & Savings Bank. In 1946 he was appointed as cashier of 1st Trust & Union Savings Bank of Sigourney. He was a 25 yr. Charter member of Wapello American Legion, a member of the Masonic Lodge for 35 yrs, a member of the United Methodist Church of Sigourney and was secretary of the Sigourney School Board for 14 years. Survivors include: his devoted wife, Ella; a son, Joseph Marion Barnes of Mason City; a daughter, Dorothy Calvert of Anamosa; two granddaughters; 3 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and 36 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Joseph and two sisters, Louise Barnes and Josephine Grouwinkel. Funeral services were held Sept. 9, 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Sigourney with Rev. Danny Lemons and Rev. Raymond Moore officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church. Reynolds Funeral Chapel was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Gaylord H. (Doc) Gilmore, age 74, died April 1 at Letterman's Army Hospital in San Francisco, CA. He was born in Morning Sun, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Clark Gilmore. He is survived by his wife Kathleen Collins Gilmore; a son, Richard Dirk of San Bruno; and daughter, Mary Ann (Mrs. Robert) Tomasi of San Jose; two grandsons, Robert and Michael Tomasi; and a sister, Joyce Elliott of Wapello. A vigil service was held April 5 at Willow Glen Funeral Home. Services were held April 6 at St. Frances Cabrini Church in San Jose. Burial was in Los Gatos Memorial Park, San Jose, with Full Military Honors. Gilmore was one of the original officers assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a U.S. Army outfit that froduced the most decorated soldiers of WWII. Members of the 442nd were known as the Go for Broke soldiers because they gave so much to the war, suffering devastating casualties. Most of them were not much more than 5 feet tall and weighed little more than 120 pounds, yet they fought with fury. They were unusual in one other way; most were nisei, second-generation Japanese-Americans. Members included Hawaii's Sen. Daniel Inouye, who lost an arm in Europe. Lt. Col. Gilmore fought with the 442nd from Naples to Rome, through the Po Valley and into the Rhineland, receiving the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Italian Cross of Military Honor, Purple Heart, and the Medaille de la Liberee from France. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1941 and joined the Army that year. Midway through World War II, then-Lt. Gilmore was sssigned to Camp Shelby, Miss., to help organize a regiment of soldiers made up of Americans of Japanese Extraction. He served with the Allied occupation forces in Japan after the war and returned to the United States in 1957 to serve as adviser to the 2nd Battle Group, 179th Infantry, at Tulsa, Okla. Upon retirement from the Army in 1961, Mr. Gilmore moved to San Jose so that both he and his son could enroll at San Jose State University. He completed graduate work there the following year and took a job teaching at St. Francis High School in Mountain View. He remained at that school until retiring in 1876.

On May 12, 1946, she married Armand Calvin at Creston. He died June 27, 1994. Mrs. Calvin was a homemaker. She was a member of the Christian Church of Creston and was affiliated with United Methodist Church of Morning Sun. She enjoyed embroidering, flowers, animals and everybody's children. Survivors include eight sons, Emanuel, David, Mark, Destiny, Mike and Robin, all of Morning Sun, Rick of Winfield and Jeff of Virginia Beach, Va.; three daughters, Becky Calvin of Fairfield, Margo Kracaw of Morning Sun, and Vicki Kephart of Winfield, 23 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a brother, Richard Konkler of Cozad, Ne. Besides her husbvand, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister and two grandchildren. There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated. The funeral service for Mrs. Calvin will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, with the Rev. Chris Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.

Eugene Godwin of Moline, Illinois; twelve grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; one grandson; one sister, and two brothers. Funeral service for Lloyd Godwin was held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 1991 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, with Rev. Bill Young officiating. Phyllis McCulley provided the organ Music. The son of John and Lola Keck Elliott, he was born June 1, 1918 at Wapello. He married Ethel Mae Raushenberger on April 12, 1942 at Kahoka, Missouri. He was a graduate of Wapello High School in 1937 and served in the US Army during World War II. He had farmed for many years and then worked and retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant of Middletown in 1982. He had attended the former Louisa Center Church. Survivors include his wife, Ethel; a son Douglas and Sandra Elliott of Elgin, Illinois; a sister Lola (Mrs. Danny) Ashland of Wapello; and a brother Gordon 'Jack' Elliott of Wapello. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mildred Creswell, and two brothers, Ronald and Ralph. The funeral service for Kenneth Elliott was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 5, 1995 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello, with Rev. Bill Moon and Rev. Robert Hamm officiating. Burial followed at the Grandview Cemetery with military rites conducted by the VFW Post 5166 of Wapello. Music was provided by Phyllis McCulley as organist and Mike Hagele as vocalist. The casket bearers included Delbert Dotson, Larry Bickford, John Creswell, Larry Ashland, John Elliott, and Donald Swanson. Friends called Sunday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.

Born sept. 18, 1909, in Benton Township, Des Moines County, he was the son of Clyde B. and Emma Suesens Holsteen. He married Gwendolyn Walker Oct. 7, 1931, in Kingston. He had been a farmer in Kingston, Mediapolis and in Illinois. He was a county chairman of National Farmer Organization for five years. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Martha Grafton, Oquawka, Ill.: two sons, John F. Holsteen Jr., Boca Raton, Fla., and Keith E. Holsteen, Morning Sun; one brother, Warren Holsteen, Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Bredes, Mediapolis, and Mrs. Marcella Peterson and Mrs. Sylvia Busse, both of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family met friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Lunning chapel. The service for Mr. Holsteen was 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Lunning chapel with the Rev. W.O. Talley officiating. The body was cremated following the service. Memorials have been established for the Mediapolis Ambulance Service and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

The son of James and Anna Lou (Leonard) Kelley, he was born February 7, 1927 at What Cheer, Iowa. On April 29, 1944 he married Rachel Hillyard at Burlington. He attended grade school at What Cheer and High School at Burlington. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW-II. He worked as parts manager for Hillyard Implement in Winfield for 21 years and as a service technician for Fox Appliance in Burlington for 13 years before retiring. He was a member of the Wapello Masonic Lodge #5; a life member of the VFW #5166, and an active member and employee of the Louisa County Historical Society. He was a former Cub Scout Leader and Little League Coach. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and his hobby of late was golfing, being a member of the Indian Hills Club at Wapello. He was a former member of the Winfield United Methodist Church and a current member of the Kingston United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Rachel of Wapello; two sons, Michael Kelley of Burlington and Dennis Kelley of LaCross, Wisconsin; one daughter, Patricia McCosh of Bellbrook, Ohio; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ellen Fouts of Fort Myers, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Mr. Kelley has been cremated and there was no visitation. Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 1998, from the Winfield United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mel Miller and Arthur Brent officiating. Interment of his cremains will be at a later date at the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Iowa City Hospice or the Kingston Methodist Church. Honts Funeral Home in Winfield was in charge of the arrangments.

The son of William and Florence Pearl Hutchcraft Myers, he was born April 19, 1916 at Sperry, Iowa. He married Edna Lane on July 11, 1936 at Herman, Missouri. She died August 15, 1980. He later married 'Davis' Kelly on December 11, 1982 at Mediapolis. Hugh was a graduate of Sperry High School in 1935. He was a lifetime farmer in the Sperry and Mediapolis area. He was a member of the Sperry United Methodist Church and served on the church board, had been a school board member of the Sperry Consolidated Schools, and was a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles, and the Elks, all of Burlington. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed dancing and reading, and greatly loved farming. The funeral ceremony for Hugh Myers was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 1999, at the United Methodist Church at Sperry, with Rev. John Gaulke officiating. The casket bearers included Andy Brader, Larry Anderson, Ron Fromm, Steve Mellinger, Larry Reif, and Craig Schmidt. The Honorary bearers were Floyd Buxton, Robert Myers, Donald Davis, Everett Clover, and Floyd Vance. Music was provided by Junellen Chiprez as the organist and special music by the St. Mary's Dodgeville Guitar Group. Burial followed at the Kossuth Cemetery at Mediapolis. Visitation was Tuesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Mediapolis where the family met with friends in the evening. A memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church at Sperry and the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service.

In August 1930 at Waterloo, he married Mildred Schenk who died in 1950. On june 4, 1959 at Cedar Rapids he married Mary J. Shaw who survives. Mr. Mathews was a lifelong resident of the Pleasant Lawn and Mt. Union areas. He was a guard at the Iowa State Penitentiary, Ft. Madison, for 10 years and had farmed most of his life. He was of the Methodist faith. Surviving in addition to his wife, are one son, John D. Mathews of Mt. Union; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Margaret) Long of Knoxville; one brother, John Mathews of Sun City, Ariz.; five grandchildren. His parents, one brother and one sister also preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at the Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant. Dr. Robert P. Robinson of the First United Methodist Church will officiate with interment in the Trinity Cemetery, Mt. Union. Friends may call as they desire after noon Saturday at the funeral home. The funeral service for Pete Kissinger will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 1992 at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Wapello, with Father Robert Brownfield and Father Joseph Pound officiating. Mucis will be provided by Eloise Kerr as organist and Rosemary Schneider as Vocalist. Funeral services for Jerry Hunt were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 29, 2000, at Lunning Chapel, Burlington, with the Rev. Shirley Bliven officiating. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun, IA. Visitation was Monday, Feb. 28 at Lunning Chapel, with the family meeting with friends in the evening. In lieu of flowers a memorial was established.
