Madison Democrat, 09 Nov. 1898, pg. 10, col. 6: "DEATH'S HARVEST - McCready, - At the residence of her daughter, Mrs. John S. Stewart, 1409 Second street, Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1898, Mrs. Melvina C. McCready, aged 65 years, 4 months and 17 days. Deceased was born in Adair county, Ky. Her maiden name was Melvina C. Montgomery. She came to Iowa in 1852 and on May 13 of the same year was married to Wm. McCready, who died July 29, 1884, in Washington township, where deceased made her home until three years ago when she came to Fort Madison and made her home with her daughter. She is survived by three daughters and five sons, namely: Mrs. John S. Stewart, this city; Mrs. Mary Gregg, Greenwood, Nebraska; Mrs. Minnie Hubley, Macedonia, Iowa; John, Columbus, Ohio; George, Walker, Mo.; Charles, Macedonia, Iowa; Fred, McVeigh, Iowa; Clyde, who is with the First Washington volunteer infantry, now en route to Manila. The deceased was one of Lee county's old settlers, highly respected by all who know her. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Interment in Cherry Grove cemetery, north of this city."
