Thank you all who responded to my query. I really appreciate it. For Mary Sue, Many thanks for the leads. I have come across Keokuk and Van Buren a lot so there may be some connection. Thank you For Linda, Wow, there is a lot here to go on and a lot matches thoughts I have had. Patrick and Abigail are a definite match. The Parson's are new leads for me. Thank you For Bob and Sue My Watson-McKiernan line relationship is Patrick McKiernan married Abigail Watson Aug. 8, 1844. McKiernan is my fraternal grandmother's line so this couple is her grandparents. I am not, as yet, familiar with a Robert Watson but There is a lot I don't know. Thank you Thanks to all who answered my query. I would like to add Abigail Watson's obituary to this. It is a good one taken from the Farmington newspaper. Death of Aged Lady After a Long Illness Remarkable career of Mrs. Abigail Watson McKiernan, Lived 91 years and nearly 4 months The Great Achievements Witnessed by the Lady During Her Eventful Life Mrs. Abigail Watson McKiernan, an aged and highly respected woman of Farmington answered the final summons at an early hour Sunday morning, March 11, after a lingering illness, and was laid to rest in Croton cemetery Monday afternoon. Mrs. McKiernan was a woman who had many friends wherever she was known; her life had been an eventful one and during her more than ninety-one years here, she had seen this country grow from a struggling confederation of states to the greatest nation on the face of the globe. She was cognizant of all the wars since the early part of the last century; her son James being a soldier in the civil war and her father served in the Indiana Wars.; she witnessed the gradual improvements in all classes of business from the cradle to the scythe in the harvest field to the modern reaping and mowing machines, with all the accompanying agricultural machinery ; the development of the lighting system from the tallow dip to the latest improved electric lights; the sewing machinery the cooking stove and the improvements in household economy from the spinning wheel and crude loom , to the telephone, the telegraph, the steamboat, the railroad, the automobile, the flying machine, electricity in all its various uses, in fact she had seen more wonders than would have fallen to her lot in 91 years before her time. Following is a brief sketch of her career. Mrs. Abigail Watson McKiernan, was born November 29th 1825, at Elrod, Ripley County, Indiana. She was one of a family of 12 children, 6 brothers and 6 sisters, she being among the younger members. She married Patrick McKiernan, August 8th, 1844, and soon after, along with most of her father's family came by steamboat from Aurora, Indiana, down the Ohio and up the Mississippi river to Keokuk, Iowa and settled near Charleston, Lee County, Iowa where James, Isaac and Mary were born. Mrs. McKiernan's health failed so in 1854 she and family made the return to the old home region, and for a year lived in Trenton, Ohio, near her sister, Polly Rutan. Later they made home at South Milan, Indiana, but na few miles from her place of birth. Here John, Eber, and Viola Belle were born. In 1864 they sold the home and moved to Elrod, where they remained until the spring of 1865, when they came back west; and after a visit at Keokuk, Charleston and Argyle among relatives, they located in Uniontown, Clark County, Missouri, where they resided till late 1867, when they came back to Croton, Lee County, Iowa. In 1870 she united with the Reorganized church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, having been baptized by Elder Robert Warnock, February 8th, and confirmed the same day by he and F. Reynolds, and later became a member of that church in Farmington, Iowa. She resided at Croton until after her husband's death, January 19th, 1873. Shortly thereafter she moved to Farmington, where her sons found employment, and later were marries, as also were the daughters. For a time she made her home with John and Eber in Keokuk. After that, with Mrs. Marry Harris, a daughter in Hannibal, Missouri, for several years. She had a stroke of paralysis last christmas morning that for a brief time interfered with her tongue nd speech, but this soon passed. Later it asserted itself and gradually increased until her left side was so seriously affected that she could swallow only liquids, and her talk was badly articulated. Though all was done that kind and loving administrations and medical skill, could do for 5 weeks, she almost imperceptibly became weaker from day to day, slowly fading until exhausted, by nature yielded to the inevitable. She departed this life 2:00 o'clock March 11th, 1917 at the ripe age of 91 years, 3 months and 11 days. Since her conversion she had been a faithful and devoted attendant at divine worship, seldom missed an opportunity to testify, and in her last illness on several occasions bore strong testimony that she knew that the gospel was the power of God unto salvation and exhorted all to diligence and faithfulness. There remain to mourn a mother's death Mr. and Mrs. Elder James McKiernan, of Farmington, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Morris, of Farming ton, Iowa, with whom the mother made her home; John McKiernan of Parsons, Kansas, and wife not present; Mrs.. E. L. Brown and husband, husband not present, of Holly, Colorado; Mr. And Mrs. Isaac McKiernan, in Tulsa (Tulare), California, not present; Mr. and Mrs. John McKiernan, nephew and niece of Fort Madison, Iowa, present. Her son Eber and his wife of Fort Madison, Iowa died about 8 years ago. The funeral service was held in the LDS church in Farmington, Iowa, at 1 o'clock p.m., March 12, 1917, Elder D. J. Williams of Burlington, Iowa, preached the sermon, assisted by Rev. Nelson, Pastor of the Baptist church of Farmington, Iowa. Interment took place in Croton Cemetery, Croton, Iowa IALEE-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Subject: > > IALEE-D Digest Volume 00 : Issue 98 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [IALEE] McKiernan, Mattox, Watson [Pat Magnuson <pemagnuson@home.com>] > #2 Re: [IALEE] McKiernan, Mattox, Wat [ramschat@interl.net (Mary Sue Chat] > #3 [IALEE] Samuel Clark [ramschat@interl.net (Mary Sue Chat] > #4 RE: [IALEE] McKiernan, Mattox, Wat [Linda Hayes <linhayes@interl.net>] > #5 RE: [IALEE] Samuel Clark [Linda Hayes <linhayes@interl.net>] > #6 [IALEE] Pictorial History Of Ft. I am told that the book has pictures and articles about some of my Lee Co. ancestors, including William and John "Sherm" Sherman Winters. Does anyone know of a copy available for purchase? Mr. Sloat also wrote a book on the History of Lee County which I would also like to have. > Susan > > ______________________________ > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > Subject: Re: [IALEE] McKiernan, Mattox, Watson > Date: Sat, 9 Dec 2000 13:55:57 -0600 > From: "Bob and Sue Rezek" <rezek1021@myexcel.com> > To: IALEE-L@rootsweb.com > > Pat, I noted that you had the surname "Watson" in the subject line of this message. What is the Watson connection to McKiernan and Mattox families? I am researching the family of Robert Watson who married Juliett McCready, dau. of Wm. and Melvina (nee Montgomery) McCready, in Ft.
