Madison, IA, Mon., Dec. 15, 1930, pg. 5, col. 1: "STEWART. The following obituary of John Stewart, former resident of this city, is taken from the Goodland (Kan.) News Republic. 'John Stewart passed away Saturday at his home after an illness of many weeks duration. Mr. Stewart had reached the age of 84, having been born on August 30, 1846, in Huntington County, Pa. Mr. Stewart formerly lived on his farm east of Goodland but owing to his failing health and that of his wife retired from farming and moved to Goodland. He came to Sherman county in 1907 from Irwin, Mo., where he had lived for three years. Mr. Stewart was of a family of six children, consisting of one sister and four brothers. The sister, Mrs. Mary Sawyer and two brothers, Robert Clark and Thomas Emory, preceded him in death. Jabes [sic; James?] Asbury and Edward Christian survive him. He was married to Miss Juliet A. McCready at Fort Madison, Iowa, November 23, 1887, and to this union two children were born, Emory McCready and Clyde Kelly, the former having died in infancy. Mr. Stewart spent his childhood in Lee County, Iowa. He was a member of the Presbyterian church there, later transferring his membershio to the Methodist church. He was a man whose integrity was unimpeachable. His friends were legion. He spent over 30 years in school work, including 12 years as county superintendant in Lee county. After moving to Sherman county he took up farming. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church yesterday afternoon and were in charge of Rev. L. E. Cooke, assisted by the former pastor, Rev. M. R. Starbuck of Hays. Burial was made in the Goodland cemetery.'"
