    1. [IALEE] Cemeteries in and around Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa

    3. Hello everyone! Does anyone know what cemeteries would have been around in 1852 in the area of Keokuk, Lee County Iowa? I would sincerely appreciate Names, addresses and phone numbers for them, so I can try to locate deceased family members. Here’s why: Today I was finally able to confirm that my gg grandfather John (aka Jonas) Hancock was living in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa at the time of the 1850 census and that his wife Elizabeth Pittenger Hancock died February 26, 1852. She is buried with relatives in Bentonsport Cemetery in Bentonsport, Van Buren County, Iowa. John Hancock moved to San Francisco, California after his wife’s death, but I have yet to be able to find their three children: Mary Hancock b about 1845 in NY, George Hancock b about 1846 in Pa. and Elizabeth Hancock about 1850 in Ia. John Hancock shows up in the 1860 SF census with a second wife and different children all born in 1854 or later and is also listed in the SF City Directory in 1854. I also read earlier today that there was a cholera epidemic in Lee County, Iowa around 1852, which makes me wonder if the children from the first marriage could have died from this epidemic and could be buried somewhere close to where they lived in Keokuk. Lee County Iowa. I am thinking that perhaps the children died from the epidemic, and the parents moved to Bentonsport so they could be with family, only to have the wife die soon after their arrival in Bentonsport. Seems like a reasonable explanation for them not to be buried with the mother in Bentonsport and not being found living with the father or other relatives. I’ll be looking forward to hearing ideas, information, etc. from all you excellent folks on this list! Thanks, Maggie Hall
