Died at Salem, Iowa on 12th of 3rd mo., 1903, at the home of Henry BROWN where he was faithfully cared for, being 84 yrs, 7 mo. and 4 days old. He was married to Martha COOK in the Friends church in 1838. To this union eight children were born, five daughters and three sons, all but one of whom have preceded him to the other world. One daughter, Mary A. GAY, and a granddaughter, Martha GAY, of Chicago, a granddaughter, Amy MADDOCK, daughter-in-law, Louisa RICHARDSON, and a brother Henry MADDOCK, of Salem, are left to mourn the loss. He came to Salem, Iowa, in 1840 and settled on a farm 1/2 mile west of Salem where he resided until 1889 when he removed to Keokuk, Iowa, where his wife died on 8th of 5th mo., 1891. About eight years ago he came back to Salem where he has lived ever since. In business he was diligent and industrious, having at one time been in the nursery business here, and then started and operated a brick and tile factory which he conducted for some time. Uncle Sammy, as he was familiarly known, was a kind and genial disposition, a friend to every one, and especially to the sick and to those in need. His parents being Friends, he has raised in that befief. During his last sickness he was very patient and often expressed his resignation to the will of the Lord. He was particularly fond of the 23rd Psalm and often quoted the 4th verse during the sickness. He was conscious most of the time during his last hours and expressed a desire that the end might come soon. Funeral services were held at the Friends church March 18 at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. PARISHO, when Salem Lodge No. 17, A.F. & A.M., of which he was one of the oldest members, took charge of the remains, interment being in the Friend's cemetery.
