LEMUEL MANEER/MINIEAR father of LORENZO D. MINIEAR born 1854. I have hit a brick wall concerning this family. I think Lemuel was married to Emily Nixon Hunter and they had two sons to this union. Lorenzo and George. Would love to have any information about this family. I think Lemuel died before the 1860 census. Emily then married a John Moots. Thanks a million for your time. I hope I'm not violating any list rules but this is too important not to pass on! DO NOT respond to ANY offers from FamilyDiscovery.com!! There are messages posted on various genealogy sites about their SCAM. They charge a "membership fee" to view FREE web sites (perhaps even your own). There is no "comprehensive data base" and it is next to impossible to try to get your money back once you supply them with a credit card number or check. I've included the recent message they sent to me. I hope I can save someone out there the trouble of getting involved with this sleazy operation. While I was in Keokuk, I talked to one cemetery worker, very rude. took me to an unmarked grave and told they were all buried there. Some help. Next time I will take one of my Aunts or uncles with me. Even though they also aren't much help. Mary Perry

The best way to find a grave at Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa is to find a cemetery worker. They have a map and can show you exactly where the section you are looking for can be found. In some cases the headstone. I would never attempt to walk Oakland Cemetery to find a grave, it is much too large. You can ask at the library if they have a map of the cemetery. Some of the sections are marked, others may not be. The Oakland Cemetery listing at the library will give you section and lot numbers/letters. There is an office at the cemetery but your chances of catching someone there is slim and none. The cemetery workers are helpful if they aren't real busy at the time. You will find the newspapers on microfilm at the Keokuk Public Library. This is a good source for obits. Census records are also on microfilm. The library also has listings for all cemeteries in Lee Co., Iowa as well as inside the city limits of Keokuk. They also have early marriage records. In short they have many good resources materials to help you. The library staff is good to help and assist you in many ways. The library is located at 210 N. 5th, Keokuk, Iowa. Death records are at the Recorders office at the South Lee County Courthouse, 25 N. 7th St., Keokuk, Iowa. Record keeping began in 1880. There are some early records but not many. Keep in mind we are a two county seat county with another courthouse in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Vital records can be found at the Recorder office, 10 St. & Ave H., Ft. Madison, Iowa. If you don't find what you are looking for at one courthouse, try the other one you many find it there. Hi, Two years ago I spent 10 days in Keokuk, I went to the Library to look up the obituarys. Then I went to the court house with the dates and looked up the documents. The only trouble I had was finding graves at Oakland cemetery. Some are marked and others, I never found. The national cemetery is very well organized. Also Big Mound cemetery is now Buena Vista Mound. If you have a motor home you can park down by the river, they water and electric. Also a dump station. We paid $5.00 a day. The court house will make copies for you. If I can help just write. Mary Perry
Does any one know of any published accounts of a cholera epidemic in Ft. Madison, Lee County in the summer of 1852? I am seeking historical data on that epidemic. The first wife and child of my great-great grandfather, William Winters, are believed to have perished of the disease in that year. The child, Charles K. Winters, is buried in Ft. Madison's City Cemetery, next to his father, but we found no grave for the mother, Mrs. Mary (Crisher) Winters there. Susan Rezek

Just dawned on me, too (I'm not quite awake at 4:42am) that I know she was never married twice because Thomas married her when she was 18 and they were married for 65+ years. Norma, I have checked my Montrose Cemetery listing and this is what I came up with- Kelly C. Reeves Gerboth, wife of A.O. Mar 8, 1876 Aug 15, 1912 This is the only Gerboth that I could find in my listing. However, since the obit for Henry says that he is buried there I would take it that he is. Kelly appears to be the wife of Albert, wouldn't you say? Norma, I am not researching this family, however, I have an obit from the Montrose Journal, Montrose, Iowa 1919. Thursday, November 20, 1919 Henry C. Gerboth Passes To The World Of Light Mr. Henry C. Gerboth passed away at his home last Monday night. He was born in Sexony Germany in 1837. He came to this country with his parents when he was six years old and settled in Pennsylvania. When he was eighteen years old he came down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi. This was the beginning of his career as steamboat engineer, at which work he spent the grater part of his active life. He was for several years, engineer for the big saw-mill here. His experiences on the river included; during the civil war, considerable work on transport boats. He acted as engineer on the Adam Heine which was in the service of General Grant and from which he directed maneuvers of the army and navy. Mr. Gerboth was married to Miss Harriet Patterson. To this union were born three sons, two of whom, Charles and Albert, with the wife and mother survive him. Mr. Gerboth was a citizen of high repute and one whose life was an inspiration to those who knew him. He was laid to rest in the Montrose Cemetery after an impressive sermon by Rev. Covert; pastor of the Presbyterian Church, and the beautiful and impressive funeral service by the Masons. The Journal wishes to extend sympathy to Mrs. Gerboth and her sons in their bereavement. Card of Thanks We desire to thank all our neighbors and friends and especially the Masons and members of the Eastern Star Chapter who have given us so much help and showed us somuch kindness during our trial of sickness and bereavement. Mrs. H.C. Gerboth Charles Gerboth Albert Gerboth I hope this is of some help to you.
