There are also two brothers, Andrew Kirchner of Keokuk, and George Kirchner, of Donnellson. Broke Hip Five Years Ago. Five years ago Mrs. Pechstein fell and broke her hip. Until that time she was in the best of health. She was a member of St. Pauls Evangelical church of Keokuk and the Ladies Aid society of the same organization. Mrs Droppel was a native of Germany, but came to America in 182. Her maiden name was Mansheim. After coming to this country she lived in St. Louis for about a year and then came to this city and has lived here since. She was the mother of twelve children, nine of whom survived her-five sons and four daughters. Two sons and one daughter are dead. Her husband has been dead several years. Mrs. Droppel had been ailing for some time. Rhematism had crippled her so that she had to use crutches to get about and death came as a welcome relief from earthly suffering. She was sixty-five years old. The funeral occured last Saturday morning at 9:00 o`clock, from St. Joseph`s Church. Mary Droppel died Jan. 13, 1897 (born 1832)
I want to thank all of you that gave me hints on where I can find my "family" in Keokuk. I really appreciate your overwhelming help and am getting very excited about doing my research there. My brother is coming from Kansas to help! Thanks to one and all! NJ Staley
Posted on: Lee Co. Ia Biographies Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/LeeBios/10058 Surname: TURNER, WINTER, WINTERS ------------------------- I am seeking information about a Henry Turner who is said to have married Charlotte Winter (later spelled: Winters) in Wooster, Wayne Co., Ohio in 1831. They came to Ft. Madison about 1852 with her parents, siblings and their families.
I am looking for information on a couple of ancestors that were riverboatmen but I don't know what the names of the boats were nor their routes. My ancestors names are Washington Jackson Davis b-10-11-1842 d-10-13-1926 and George Washington Oman b-1827 d-3-4-1897. I have been told that George Oman was a river boat pilot, I have no idea what capacity Washington J. Davis worked other than riverboatman. I was wondering if anyone with the Pictorial History of Ft. Madison or any other publication like that may have something in them as well. If not, does anyone know how to locate information of this type when you don't have a specific boat to look up? Is their a good site for this type of information? Thanks Amy in AZ
Try going to my second cousin once removed website. Her grandfather was on the river. He was a captian on the boats around the turn of the century. She might have an idea on how to find yours since she has looked herself. Go to the Dubuque Co IA genweb page and look for her attachment. She is FIDDLELINSUE@aol.com I believe. Certainly I can look for you. Do you have the information from 'Biographical Review Lee County, Iowa' 1905 On Henry C. Gerboth? 'Mr. Gerboth's experience as an engineer has been extremely varied, and included during the Civil War considerable work on transport boats, he also acting as engineer of the dispatch boat, "Adam Heine," which was in the service of General Grant, at Millikin's Bend, near Vicksburg, from which the general viewed the maneuvers of the army and fleet.' Does this help? Listers, Mary and N. Staley, I have a big favor to ask. I am researching the Lee County GERBOTH family. They are rather a unique family in that there are less than a hundred of this surname in the US. Three Gerboth families arrived at three different times in the mid to late 1800's. Our gg-grandfather was Freidrich (Fredrick) Gerboth arriving in 1849 and eventually settled in Montrose Iowa. He and his wife are listed in the 1910 Census. He was a steamboat engineer on the ADAM HEINE Steamship during the civil war. I have consulted many steamboat websites but have not been able to find any info about this ship. I would appreciate some research help by anyone going to Keokuk or Montrose that would be willing to look at any indexes for the GERBOTH name and especially something on this steamship and the role it played during the war. My favor is, if you will tuck this email in with your research papers and do a quick look for this name while you are there I would be more than happy to reimburse any expenses for any anformation you can find on this family. I wouldn't even ask this favor if this were a common name having 100's of listings. Thank you so very much. Hello everyone! Does anyone know what cemeteries would have been around in 1852 in the area of Keokuk, Lee County Iowa? I would sincerely appreciate Names, addresses and phone numbers for them, so I can try to locate deceased family members. Heres why: Today I was finally able to confirm that my gg grandfather John (aka Jonas) Hancock was living in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa at the time of the 1850 census and that his wife Elizabeth Pittenger Hancock died February 26, 1852. She is buried with relatives in Bentonsport Cemetery in Bentonsport, Van Buren County, Iowa. John Hancock moved to San Francisco, California after his wifes death, but I have yet to be able to find their three children: Mary Hancock b about 1845 in NY, George Hancock b about 1846 in Pa. and Elizabeth Hancock about 1850 in Ia. John Hancock shows up in the 1860 SF census with a second wife and different children all born in 1854 or later and is also listed in the SF City Directory in 1854. I also read earlier today that there was a cholera epidemic in Lee County, Iowa around 1852, which makes me wonder if the children from the first marriage could have died from this epidemic and could be buried somewhere close to where they lived in Keokuk. Lee County Iowa. I am thinking that perhaps the children died from the epidemic, and the parents moved to Bentonsport so they could be with family, only to have the wife die soon after their arrival in Bentonsport. Seems like a reasonable explanation for them not to be buried with the mother in Bentonsport and not being found living with the father or other relatives. Ill be looking forward to hearing ideas, information, etc. from all you excellent folks on this list! Thanks, Maggie Hall
