Posted on: Lee Co. Ia Biographies Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/LeeBios/10073 Surname: Belknap, LeRoy, Reid, Tomlinson ------------------------- BELKNAP, WILLIAM W., GEN., is the son of Gen. William G. Belknap, of the United States Army, who distinguished himself in the war of 1812, in the Florida war, and at Resaca and Buena Vista in the war with Mexico, and died in the service in 1851, Texas. He was born at Newburg, New York, in 1829, and, after attending the high school and academy there, and pursuing his studies in Florida, where his father was stationed, he entered Princeton College in 1846, and graduated in 1848. After studying law in Georgetown, D.C., and being admitted to the bar in Washington City, he went, in July, 1851, to Keokuk and commenced the practice of the law, shortly afterward forming a partnership with Hon. R.P. Lowe (who was soon after elected ) District Judge, and later Governor and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the State), and brought his mother and two sisters there in 1852. He was a member of the Legislature from Lee County, in 1857, as a representative of the Democratic party; but, being a strong Douglas Democrat, and not uniting with the members of that party who favored what was known as the Lecompton Constitution of Kansas, which was an important and exciting question in the politics of the party, he joined the Republican party. He was appointed Major of the 15th Iowa Vols., by Gov. Kirkwood, in 1861, of which regiment Gen. Hugh T. Reid was Colonel, and participated in that capacity in the battle of Shiloh, where he was wounded and had his horse shot under him. He remained in the army until the close of the war, rising gradually through the grades of Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel; was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers, by President Lincoln, in 1864, on the recommendation of his commanders, Gens., Blair and Sherman, and was brevetted Major General in 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the war. Having, as Brigadier General of Volunteers commanded the 3d Brigade, 4th Division, 17th Army Corps (Blair's) of the army of the Tennessee (McPherson's ); he was in numerous battles; among them, Shiloh, Corinth, the several battles near Atlanta, and the battle of Bentonville, N.C. He was engaged in the siege of Corinth, Vicksburg and of Atlanta, and commanded his Brigade (composed of the 11th,13th,15th, and 16th Iowa Regiments), under Sherman in his march from Altanta to the sea; thence to Goldsboro', Raleigh and Washington. He was repeatedly mentioned for coolness and courage, and in the battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864, he took prisoner Co.l. Lampley, 45th Alabama, by pulling him over the works, by his coat collar. At the close of the war, he was appointed Collector of Internal Revenue for the 1st District of Iowa. On the accession of Gen. Grant to the Presidency, he was offered the choice of either one of three important public positions in another State, and one at Washington, which he declined, and remained Collector of the 1st District(comprising the counties of Lee, Des Moines, Louisa, Washington, Jefferson, Van Buren, Henry, and Davis), until October, 1869, when he was appointed Secretary of War by President Grant, and his many friends point to the records of that office for the proof of his faithful labors for a term of over six years. Prior to this appointment, he was selected as the orator for the Army of the Tennessee at the re-union of all the Western armies, at Crosby's Opera House, Chicago, December, 1868, and delivered the address at the great Re-union of Iowa soldiers, at Des Moines, in September,, 1870. After his resignation of the office of Secretary of War, articles of impeachment were presented against him, and after a protracted and thorough trial, he was acquitted by the Senate. Gen. Belknap married, in 1854, Miss LeRoy, of Keokuk the sister of Mrs. Hugh T. Reid, and their son, Hugh Reid Belknap, is now a student at Phillips academy, Andover, Mass. His present wife, whom he married in 1873, formerly Miss Tomlinson, of Harrodsburg, Ky., is the daughter of the late Dr. John Tomlinson, an able and famous physician of that locality. They have one child, a daughter, Alice Belknap. Since leaving the War Department Gen. Belknap has been engaged in legal practice; his residence is Keokuk but his business before the Departments at Washington, a large part of which results from his employment as attorney by several Railroad Corporations, requires him to be absent from home during a portion of each year. >From 1879 Lee County History, Biographical Sketches, Keokuk City,pg, 683 & 684

The 1887 Portrait and Biographical Album of Lee Co., Iowa can be purchased for $42.00 from Selby Publishing, at http://www.netusa1.net/~selbypub/index.html Here is the description: "LEE CO.- PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF, (1887) by Chapman Bros. repr. Portraits & biog. sketches of prominent & representative citizens of the co., with portraits & biog. of the Governors of Iowa & Presidents of the U.S. Hard, index, 648 pp. $42.00." Be aware that the book has a general, topical index, but not an "every-name" index; and the biographical entries are not in alphabetical order. So it takes some browsing and luck to find individuals in it. But it is a nice edition. I'm wondering if anyone out there has access to a library in or near Prairie City and can look to see if an obituary is available for John A. Frank. His obit appeared in the Keokuk Daily Gate City on 3/18/1922 but it was very brief and contained little information. I am hoping his obituary from Prairie City is more informative. He died in Prairie City and is buried in Keokuk with his family. He had been in Prairie City since @ 1892. I have no other information on him. Additionally it might also be helpful to have his 1900 Census information. Since Ancestry.com still doesn't have the complete records available, I have not joined and am hoping to find the Census info somewhere else in the meantime. The online resources are still limited. I am willing to reimburse expenses for copying and mailing. Thanks in advance. Stephanie in Austria

Posted on: Lee Co. Ia Biographies Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/LeeBios/10070 Surname: SANDERS ------------------------- Taken from Portrait and Biographical Album of Lee County, Iowa Printed 1887 Pages 328-329 GERHARD SANDERS, a successful farmer and cattle dealer of Marion Township, is one of the most prominent and intelligent residents of this section, and in his department of the business world has uniformly met with success. He is one of the factors of that useful element which has contributed so much to the development and prosperity of the Great West, having been born in the Empire of Germany, and descended from a line of excellent ancestry. He first open his eyes to the light in 1840, and in accordance with the laws and customs of his native land, was placed in school at the early age of six years, and continued until fourteen. He was then employed upon a farm, following agricultural pursuits for three years in his native country. When seventeen years old, not being satisfied with his condition or prospects in the land of his birth, he resolved to emigrate to the New World. He accordingly boarded a sailing-vessel, and after a prosperous voyage landed in the city of New Orleans. From this place he came to Ft. Madison, Iowa, and thence to Marion Township, where he resumed his old-time occupation on a farm, and followed this for nine years. Upon arriving in Marion Township, in 1857, Mr. Sanders was in debt to the extent of $36, which he borrowed from a friend in Germany before sailing for the United States. This debt he paid in full, and in 1858, after having worked industriously and saved his earnings, he found himself with the sufficient means to purchase a small tract of land. He secured thirty-five acres, and began farming on his own account, applying himself diligently to the improvement and cultivation of his land, and was rewarded with success. As his means accumulated he added to his first purchase, and is now the owner of 280 acres, all finely improved and in a high state of cultivation. This is situated on section 7, and with its handsome farm residence, good barns and outbuildings, and tasteful surroundings, forms one of the prettiest spots in the landscape of Lee County. A portion of his land is devoted to pasture, and he fattens from two to three carloads of cattle annually. Of these he now has a herd of forty head, and exhibits some of the finest animals in this section. He has also been very successful in raising hogs, and although the cholera has raged among the farmers around him his animals have happily escaped the scourge for the past seven years, owing probably to the good care taken of them and their cleanly surroundings. Besides the barns and cattle-sheds on the farm of Mr. Sanders, he has a costly and valuable wind pump for hoisting water for his stock and for other farm purposes. He is the principal stock shipper of this township, and the proceeds of his operations in this branch of agriculture yield him a handsome income. He has not been without his drawbacks, having for a period of eight years been in feeble health, but finally regained his strength and prospered as before. The marriage of Gerhard Sanders and Miss Mary Huchton was celebrated in St. Paul, this county, in 1866. Mrs. Sanders is the daughter of Christ Huchton, one of the pioneer settlers of Lee County, and was born in this county in 1852. She is a lady of rare virtue, greatly esteemed in the community, as an excellent wife, mother, neighbor and friend. Of her union with our subject there were born eight children, six boys and two girls-Maggie, John, Mary, Joseph, Henry, William, Barney and Christ. Mr. Sanders and his family are members of the St. James Catholic Church at St. Paul. In politics he votes the Democratic ticket. A lithographic view of Mr. Sanders residence is shown on another page of this volume.
