    3. The following is my DALTON ancestor's family history, as I now know it, for their residency in Jones County, Iowa. As you can see, not much is really known as of yet, and I would appreciate anyone's input. I am especially curious to know more about the family members that did not migrate on to Shelby County. Jones County, IA DALTON History My GGGgrandfather, William DALTON, and his family arrived in Iowa in 1839 and had settled in Jones Co, IA by the time of the 1840 US Census. William DALTON (b. 8 May 1792, VA) had married Martha NEW (b. 20 Jul 1762, VA) on 5 January 1817 in Warren Co, KY and raised the following children: (Henry F.?) DALTON (b. 1817-1820, Warren Co, KY) Harvey F. DALTON (b. 27 Feb 1824, Warren Co, KY; d. 10 Oct 1893, Shelby Co, KY) William Logan DALTON (b. ca 1826, Warren Co, KY; d. 1850? Fannie Wright DALTON (b. ca Feb 1828, Warren Co, KY; d. 16 Jul 1829, Warren Co, KY) James Riley DALTON (b. ca 1831, Warren Co, KY) Prior New DALTON (b. ca 1833, ?; d. 13 Jan 1850 Jones Co, IA) (son) DALTON (b. 1835-1840?) (son) DALTON (b. 1835-1840?) (The youngest two sons only show up in the 1840 US Census, Jones Co, IA. Nothing more is known about them, or if they existed at all. They are not enumerated with William DALTON and family in the 1850 US Census, but seem too young to have left, unless in death.) The DALTON family was enumerated in the following census: 1840 US Census: Jones Co, IA William DALTON 2 male - under 5 2 male - 10-15 2 male - 15-20 1 male - 20-30 1 male - 40-50 1 female - 40-50 1850 US Census: Richland Twp, Jones Co, IA Wm DALTON (58- M- VA) Martha (55-F-VA) Harvey (27-M-KY) Maria (20-F-OH) James : (19-M-KY) 1852 Iowa State Census; Monticello Twp, Jones Co, IA William DALTON The Jones Co, Iowa web page makes note that William DALTON was appointed, at the time of organizing the county precincts, a Judge of Elections for Bowen Prairie. William DALTON also served on the three member board of County Commissioners in 1843, 1844 and 1845. Henry F. DALTON & William L. DALTON were shown on the following Land Warrants in 1848: Page 171: Land Warrant # 33552: 16 Nov 1848 Northwest of Monticello in Lovell Twp. NE 1/4: 160 acres S-7: T-86: R-3W Page 172: Land Warrant #10499: 21 Nov 1848 Northwest of Monticello in Lovell Twp. W 1/2 of NE !/4 and E 1/2 of NW 1/4: 160 acres S-10: T-86: R-3W Harvey F. DALTON (my GGgrandfather) was married to Maria SELDERS on 27 Dec 1849 in Jones Co, Iowa (license # 92, p. 14). Maria (b. 27 Jan 1830, OH) was the daughter of Robert Leeper SELDERS and Ann (BARNES) SELDERS. The SELDERS family first arrived in the state of Iowa in 1848 Prior New DALTON died 13 Jan 1850 at the age of 17 and is buried in the Bowens Prairie Cemetery, Richland Twp, Jones Co, Iowa. William & Martha DALTON, Harvey & Maria DALTON and James DALTON together had left Jones County and migrated to Shelby Co, Iowa circa 1856. Does anyone know anything else that they can add?
