I am trying to locate marriage records of a Mary Ann Cahill Ryan to a Francis M. Smith. It would have taken place sometime after the 1895 state census and September 1896 in Dubuque, Jones or Jackson Counties. Would it be possible for someone to check on it for me. I tried Vital Records Dept. in Des Moines with no luck. Also any suggestions for other resouces would be appreciated. Thank you. Maurna. -----Original Message----- From: IAJONES-D-request@rootsweb.com <IAJONES-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: IAJONES-D@rootsweb.com <IAJONES-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, January 21, 1999 3:24 AM Subject: IAJONES-D Digest V99 #3
They would be in the Monticello phone book, but from experience, the Catholic Church in the Dubuque Diocese is very reluctant to be helpful in genealogy searches. I live in Anamosa. Is there anything I can get for you? Diana
I have access to the census if you'd like. It's here at the Iowa State Historical Society and is indexed. Diana
Janis, No such thing as horning in on a message that's put out to the list (as far as I'm concerned anyway) Thanks so much for the address and phone number for the Immaculate Conception Church in Castle Grove! I really appreciate your looking that up for me. I will try to make telephone contact today, in fact. Thanks again! Pat Byrne Thurmes (in MN)
I could check for you on my next trip to the library. Don't know when that may be, please let me know if someone else checks before I go. Dawn
Pat, Sorry to horn in on your note to Frances, but I found the church. If you haven't heard from anyone else (or even if you have!) it is: Immaculate Conception of Castle Grove 22178 County Road D62 Monticello, IA 52310 319-465-5570 Hope this helps! Janis
Does anyone have access to the 1850 Jones County Iowa census? We have been trying to get the Iowa census in at our FHC and can't seem to get it done. There is a John Campbell listed in Clay Township, Jones County. Would like to know all the info for the household -- wife, children, places of birth, occupation etc. Thank you ahead of time to anyone who can do this. Don and Mary in Wyoming
Pat -- Sorry. This was about 4 years ago. I have one cover letter Mr. Aitchison sent me but nothing about a charge. My recollection is that I wrote to the Historical Society with a general inquiry and Mr. Aitchison, who was president of the Historical Society, went ahead and did the search. I suppose I offered to reimburse him, but he may have declined. In any case, I was much in his debt. Regarding Castle Grove, I can't help you. I do not live in that part of the state. I did look in a CD of phone numbers, but found nothing. It is possible that Castle Grove is too small to have a telephone exchange and you might have to look under another town name. Probably you would do best to contact some unit of the Catholic Church and ask for the information. Frances At 01:18 PM 1/20/1999 EST, you wrote: >Frances, >Thanks for the rapid response! Pat -- A couple of years ago I needed that kind of information and wrote to Adrian J. Aitchison Tri-County Historical Society (Dubuque, Jackson, Jones) 1200 5th Avenue, S.E. Cascade, IA 52033 He very kindly did a surname search for me and sent me photocopies of several obituaries from the "Cascade Pioneer." Frances, Thanks for the rapid response! Do you remember what he charged? (So I could include a check with my request if I contact him) Also, Are you living in the Jones county area? If so, would you do a telephone book look up for me? I need a number for the Catholic Church in Castle Grove...I believe it is Immaculate Conception. Thank you again. Pat Thurmes
I may have put this out here before, but in case of new subscribers,am wondering if anyone has access to old Jones County obituaries? Specifically for the year of 1885. Am looking for an obit for my ggrandmother, Catherine Farrell Byrne (or maybe Burn) who is buried in the Catholic cemetery at Castle Grove. Not sure if it was January or June of 1885 that she died. Is there a county library that might have the old newspapers on microfilm? Thanks in advance. Pat (in MN)

Can anyone give me directions to the Madison Village Cemetery? Was Madison Village a town at one time? Thanks, Dawn
Diana- Is there a way to tell which entries in these early censuses are the ones from Jones county? -Richard -- Richard Harrison/Encinitas, San Diego, California IAGenWeb Assistant State Coordinator County Coordinator, Jones Co. As far as I know, Jones County was enumerated as part of Dubuque county during those early years. You might want to search those records, if available. They should be at the Iowa State Historical Society, 400 E. Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52245. Does anyone know if Jones County participated in the early census for the years of 1836, 1838, 1844, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1851 & 1852??? If so, have those records been compiled and been made available for viewing??? And does anyone know what type of information I might be able to gather from those records??? I'm still trying to piece together the history of the family of William DALTON while in Jones County. Sandy Kiger
The following is my DALTON ancestor's family history, as I now know it, for their residency in Jones County, Iowa. As you can see, not much is really known as of yet, and I would appreciate anyone's input. I am especially curious to know more about the family members that did not migrate on to Shelby County. Jones County, IA DALTON History My GGGgrandfather, William DALTON, and his family arrived in Iowa in 1839 and had settled in Jones Co, IA by the time of the 1840 US Census. William DALTON (b. 8 May 1792, VA) had married Martha NEW (b. 20 Jul 1762, VA) on 5 January 1817 in Warren Co, KY and raised the following children: (Henry F.?) DALTON (b. 1817-1820, Warren Co, KY) Harvey F. DALTON (b. 27 Feb 1824, Warren Co, KY; d. 10 Oct 1893, Shelby Co, KY) William Logan DALTON (b. ca 1826, Warren Co, KY; d. 1850? Fannie Wright DALTON (b. ca Feb 1828, Warren Co, KY; d. 16 Jul 1829, Warren Co, KY) James Riley DALTON (b. ca 1831, Warren Co, KY) Prior New DALTON (b. ca 1833, ?; d. 13 Jan 1850 Jones Co, IA) (son) DALTON (b. 1835-1840?) (son) DALTON (b. 1835-1840?) (The youngest two sons only show up in the 1840 US Census, Jones Co, IA. Nothing more is known about them, or if they existed at all. They are not enumerated with William DALTON and family in the 1850 US Census, but seem too young to have left, unless in death.) The DALTON family was enumerated in the following census: 1840 US Census: Jones Co, IA William DALTON 2 male - under 5 2 male - 10-15 2 male - 15-20 1 male - 20-30 1 male - 40-50 1 female - 40-50 1850 US Census: Richland Twp, Jones Co, IA Wm DALTON (58- M- VA) Martha (55-F-VA) Harvey (27-M-KY) Maria (20-F-OH) James : (19-M-KY) 1852 Iowa State Census; Monticello Twp, Jones Co, IA William DALTON The Jones Co, Iowa web page makes note that William DALTON was appointed, at the time of organizing the county precincts, a Judge of Elections for Bowen Prairie. William DALTON also served on the three member board of County Commissioners in 1843, 1844 and 1845. Henry F. DALTON & William L. DALTON were shown on the following Land Warrants in 1848: Page 171: Land Warrant # 33552: 16 Nov 1848 Northwest of Monticello in Lovell Twp. NE 1/4: 160 acres S-7: T-86: R-3W Page 172: Land Warrant #10499: 21 Nov 1848 Northwest of Monticello in Lovell Twp. W 1/2 of NE !/4 and E 1/2 of NW 1/4: 160 acres S-10: T-86: R-3W Harvey F. DALTON (my GGgrandfather) was married to Maria SELDERS on 27 Dec 1849 in Jones Co, Iowa (license # 92, p. 14). Maria (b. 27 Jan 1830, OH) was the daughter of Robert Leeper SELDERS and Ann (BARNES) SELDERS. The SELDERS family first arrived in the state of Iowa in 1848 Prior New DALTON died 13 Jan 1850 at the age of 17 and is buried in the Bowens Prairie Cemetery, Richland Twp, Jones Co, Iowa. William & Martha DALTON, Harvey & Maria DALTON and James DALTON together had left Jones County and migrated to Shelby Co, Iowa circa 1856. Does anyone know anything else that they can add? Sandy Kiger
I've heard of it Richard, I'm just not certain where it's at anymore. It doesn't exist anymore and it seems to me that it was real close to Edinburgh. Let me ask Laverta and I'll get back to you. Diana

Hale is about a whole ten houses, not very big. There is an old eatery there that is no longer in business and the owner of it has a lot of records which deal with the history of Hale. If you write to the postmistress at Hale (she has the post office in her home and everyone must go there to pick up their mail!) she'll know who the owner of the old night club is and can give you his name and address. He used to keep pictures of Hale on the walls of the dining room and is the only one in Hale who knows much, except perhaps the postmistress. I can tell you they're NOT at the Jones County Genealogical Society, although they MIGHT be at the Historical Society in Edinburgh. Last chance would be the Linn County Genealogical Society in Cedar Rapids. -- Diana Hanson, Administrator, Iowa Digital Education Association Professional Genealogist ************************************************* What good is magic if it can't save a unicorn? ************************************************* http://www.idea.edu/index.html (Idea School) http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/5327/ireland.htm (Original IrelandGenWeb Resource Pages and Passenger Lists) http://www.idea.edu/courses/general/gen/index.html (Free Genealogy Classes) http://www.idea.edu/staff/hanson/hubbard/index.html (Mother Hubbard's Cupboard)
