Iowa 5th Cavalry, Company I, p. 284. Age 18. Residence Jackson Co., nativity New Hampshire. Enlisted June 24, 1861. Mustered July 17, 1861. Promoted 7th Corp. Sep. 5, 1862; 5th Sargeant Feb. 23, 1863; 4th Sgt. Oct 1863. Taken prisoner Nov. 25, 1863, Chattanooga, Tenn. Died in prison June 19, 1864, Andersonville, GA. Bd. Andersonville National Cemetery, GA, Grave 2161. Franklin Wells, was born probably around Sutton, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. I suspect that Erastus Wells (listed below) was his brother. Another suspected brother, Gideon Wells, also lived in Farmers Creek Township, Jackson County, Iowa (Gideon is my 2nd great-grandfather), who served in Iowa 20th Infantry, Company K. Another suspected brother, who enlisted at Fulton (in Farmers Creek Township), was Alonzo Charles ("Lon") Wells, who served in Iowa 12th Infantry, Company I. Another suspected brother, Levi Wells, lived in Farmers Creek Township in 1852 and later. According to infomation on Alonzo Charles Wells, there were eight or nine siblings in the family.
