    1. [IAJACKSO] Re: ALBERT SUTTON/ ALVIRA (RALSTON) in Jackson / Jones Co.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SUTTON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5k.2ADE/1227.1 Message Board Post: Hi Becky My gr-gr-grandfather Lyman C. Sutton was Albert E. Sutton’s cousin. Albert’s father appears to be Charles C. Sutton, and his mother Rosella G. (?). They moved from Persia Township, Cattaraugus County NY, (40-50miles south of Buffalo) in about 1851-1852. Lyman C. Sutton moved to Iowa with Charles C. and his family and shortly thereafter settled in Fillmore County MN, however, his father Lemuel, Charles C.’s brother, and living close by in Otto Tsp does not appear to me to have made the move to Iowa. To answer your question about Albert E.’s ancestors and siblings...... If you look at the 1850 Census for Persia Tsp, Cattaraugus Co, you will see listed as family 153: Charles C 51y/o M Shoemaker $750 born in RI Rosella G 39 F RI Lemuel W 14 M Leander R 10 M James F 8 M Albert 6 M Sarah L 2 F Clarissa 3/12 F They told the census taker that all the children were born in NY, and this is probably true. And, in 1855 Iowa had a state census, and in Clay Township, Jones County is C.C. Sutton 55y/o M [3years in Iowa] born in RI Farmer R.G. “ 42 F “ RI Wm? “ 22 M “ NY Farmer Fanny “ 16 F [1year in Iowa] “ NY (Williams wife) L ? “ 19 M [3years in Iowa] “ Leander “ 16 M “ Mary ???? ?? F “ Albert “ 10 M “ Claricy 5 F “ H. Sutton 35 M ? years in Iowa NY Mary “ 8 F H. Sutton was Harvey Sutton who was Charles C. Suttons nephew (my gr-gr grandfather Lyman C's brother) In 1860 however, things have changed.... Charles C. is missing.... and the 1860 U.S. Census lists, in Brandon Township, Jackson County Canton village: Rosella G. Sutton 50 F Innkeeper $1200 real estate, $300 personal born in Rhode Island L.B. “ 23 M J.F. “ 18 Albert “ 16 M Clarrissa “ 10 F Anson E. “ 5 On the 1870 U.S. Census for Brandon Township, Jackson County Canton village is the following in dwelling 142, family 132: Sutton, Albert 24 M W Day laborer Ohio , Elvira 24 F W Keeping House Pennsylvania Edward G 3 M W Jenny 8/12 F W So, with the exception of the Ohio birthplace, I would guess this is the same Albert as was living with Rosella G. Sutton 10 years prior. Albert was about seven when he moved to Iowa, so maybe the day the census taker showed up he kind of forgot exactly where he was born. But, in 1880 they were in the Iowa Census (I don’t have a copy of this one – just notes, and I didn’t note where..., but is either Jones or Jackson County): Albert E. Sutton 37y/o M born NY father born RI mother born RI Elvira “ 37 F Penn Penn Penn Albert E “ 12 M Iowa NY NY Jennie “ 11 F “ ” “ Florence 8 F Ross 4 M Mary 2 F A couple of years ago I put together a very detailed paper on the ancestry of Charles C (almost certainly from Rhode Island) on the Genforum. www.genforum.genealogy.com/sutton/messages/1589.html and continued on www.genforum.genealogy.com/sutton/messages/1690.html. – with several replies. I might try to find the file and cross post it to this forum. Who else among these Suttons is buried in the Canton cemetary? Is Charles C. there by any chance? At about the same time as these Suttons moved to Jones County, another Sutton Family from Pennsylvania moved to Farmers Creek Township Jackson County. Ant there was another Sutton, Martin, from Ireland, in Prairie Creek township a few years later. And I am certain that these families are un-related – so watch out for this confusion. Hope this helps.... Bob Sutton [email protected]
