Does anyone have any information on the Daniel Scully family of Maquoketa twp? They lived there from 1855 to at least 1880. Daniel was a tailor in Maquoketa. He was the only surname of Scully in that town. His children: Edmund b. 1855 in Maquoketa Martha b. 1857 " " Anna b. 1859 " " Daniel b.1863 " " Joseph b. 1865 " " Francis b. 1868 " " Charles b. 1873 " " All the children were born in Maquoketa and attended school there. Any information on this family would be grately appreciated. I am sure that at least several of the children were married in Maquoketa. Are there school records available for 1860 thru 1880? These children should be listed in those records. I thank you if you can help me in my research on this family. The St Nicholas church records indicate he was 80 years old at the time of his death. The stone which marked his grave is no longer at the cemetery site. Some researchers say that there were remains taken from the Spruce Creek site and buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery at Bellevue. I am interested in any records showing the location of Peter Hingthgen's grave.

Surnames: Lamborn, Shaffer, Hodge, Bryant, Christian, Lavere Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5k.2ADE/1236 Message Board Post: SAMUEL H. LAMBORN, GRISWOLD. Samuel H. Lamborn, wealthy and retired farmer, and well known throughout Pleasant township for his efficient participation in its public affairs, is now an honored resident of Griswold. He has been a resident of Iowa for more than half a century, and of Cass county since 1880, and as his career in this State has been one of continuous rectitude and usefulness, the unqualified honor which is accorded him, and which is the highest gratification of old age, is no more than is justly due him. Our subject was born in Venango county, Pa., on the 24th of April, 1838, his parents being Josiah and Rachel (Lavere) Lamborn, both natives of that State – the father, of Chester county, and the mother of Armstrong county. Josiah Lamborn was a contractor who supplied the blast furnaces of his locality with charcoal; this occupation, with that of milling, he followed until 1854, when he migrated with his family to Jackson county, Iowa, coming via the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. He there engaged in farming, and continued thus until his death in 1865; his wife died during the following year. The father served in the War of 1812 as a member of an Ohio regiment. Joseph Lamborn, the grandfather, was also a native of Pennsylvania, a blacksmith by trade and died in Columbiana county. Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Lamborn were the parents of eight children, of whom five were sons, and four of he number are still living, our subject being the only one who resides in this county. Samuel H. Lamborn was educated in Pennsylvania and reared within its limits until he was sixteen years of age, preferring agricultural occupations to those of an industrial character. In 1854, therefore, when he accompanied the family to Iowa he was an eminently valuable member of it, although still but a youth. After residing with his parents and as a married man, a resident of Jackson county, for a period of nearly twenty-seven years, in 1880 he settled on a farm four miles south of Griswold. There he continued his career as an intelligent and successful tiller of the soil until 1897, when he fixed upon that brisk little city as the home of his retirement from active labors. In 1860 Mr. Lamborn was married to Ellen Shaffer, a native of New Lisbon, Ohio, and the daughter of Amouvel and Sarah Shaffer, well known Iowa pioneers of ’56. The seven children of their family were as follows: Sarah J., now Mrs. Hodge; Millard F., residing on the family homestead; Charles W., an attorney of Chicago; Perry E., a farmer of this county; Jessie M., now Mrs. William Bryant; Jennie, Mrs. Christian; and Walter A., a druggist of Denison. In politics Mr. Lamborn is a Democrat and has filled nearly all the township offices with which his fellow citizens could honor him. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the esteem accorded him is only commensurate with acquaintanceship. Lamborn, who passed away at his home in that place Monday of last week and was buried there Wednesday afternoon. Deceased was born in Venango county, Pennsylvania, 82 years ago last April and came to Jackson county in 1854. He was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Shaffer, who passed away some years ago. He was engaged in farming here until 1878 when he went to Kansas. He afterwards returned to Iowa and purchased a farm near Griswold where he resided until his death. He was the last of a family of ten children to pass away and he is survived by the following sons and daughters, Miller, Charles, Perry, Walter, Sarah, Jessie and Jennie. Source: The Bellevue Herald, 18 Oct., 1921, page 1. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [photo of Samuel H. Lamborn] Samuel H. Lamborn, widely known and highly respected resident of Griswold and vicinity for upwards of forty years, passed peacefully away Sunday evening, October 9, at the ripe age of 83 years. Mr. Lamborn was born in Venango county, Pennsylvania, April 24, 1838. With his parents, brothers and sisters he came to Iowa in 1854. At this time no railroads extended farther west than Chicago and the family came by steamboat down the Ohio and up the Mississippi to Jackson county. The timbered areas along the River were attractive to settlers. Here was transportation, building material and fuel, and in this rapidly growing community of pioneers the family made a home. In 1861 he was married to Ellen Shaffer, whose family had recently come to the West from Ohio. Of the children born to them, seven survive: Mrs. Sarah J. Hodge of Salt Lake City, Utah; Millard, Herschel, Sask.; Charles, Chicago; Perry, Garden City, Kansas; Jessie (Mrs. W. C. Bryant), Jennie (Mrs. A. B. Christian), both of Griswod; Walter of Denison, Iowa. The family resided in Jackson county until 1880 when they removed to Kansas and, after a few months, to Cass county. Mr. Lamborn purchased a farm south of Griswold, where he lived until 1897, when he left the farm to the care of the boys and came to live in Griswold. Here the beloved wife and mother passed away in 1908. For some years he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Bryant. Mr. Bryant [should have read Lamborn] was a man of active mind, positive convictions and strong character; took great interest in politics and public affairs and served his community in various public offices. He had an extensive acquaintance in this part of Iowa and many friends. In the organization of the Union church of Griswold in 1910 he took a hearty and active interest and his name appears on the list of organizers and charter members. He continued a zealous worker and supported in this liberal church movement. Mr. Lamborn was the youngest, and last survivor, of a family of ten brothers [note: ten siblings total , but not all brothers]. All of his children, except one, came to attend his funeral; also nephews, Samuel H. Lamborn and Alex Reed from Bellevue, Iowa. Funeral services were conducted by his friend and former pastor, the Rev. George T. Ashley, now residing at Wichita, Kansas. The Masonic lodge of Griswold, of which he was an honored member, conducted the burial service. Source: The Griswold American, 20 Oct., 1921, page 1.

CATHERINE REED GOES TO HER REWARD Beloved Mother Lays Down Life’s Burden to Enter Higher Sphere Mrs. Catherine Reed, who’s serious condition was mentioned in last week’s Leader, answered the final summons Friday evening at then o’clock. The immediate cause of her death was peritonitis following a chronic trouble of extended duration. Two weeks previous her beloved daughter Mary departed this life and this sad bereavement no doubt hastened the death of the aged mother as the two had for so long been boon companions, as it were, and the **tter had expressed a desire to be reunited with those who had gone before. Deceased whose maiden name was Catherine Lamborn, was born in Mercer county, Pa., February 13, 1834, having therefore attained the age of 82 years and 26 days. She came to this county and was united in marriage in 1855 with Wm. H. Reed of Washington township, former member of the Iowa legislature. They continued the pursuit of farming until about sixteen years ago when they erected a fine home in this city, Mr. Reed passing away in 1901. Mrs. Reed ranked among us all as a woman of culture, refinement, sympathy, a kind neighbor, devoted mother and true friend. There was a daily beauty about her life which own every heart and she gained confidence when she seemed least to seek it. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and loved to attend its services. She firmly believed that the one who scatters the flowers in the pathway of those about them, who lets into the dark places of life the sunshine of human sympathy and human happiness, is following in the footsteps of the Master. She is survived by three sons and three daughters, namely: Robert of Red Oak, John of Griswold, Alex of Bellevue, Mrs. F. A. Poole of Sumner, Wash.; Mrs. E. S. Dyas of Bellevue and Mrs. W. L. Gifford of Dubuque; also one brother, Perry Lamborn of Washington township. [note: a brother Samuel H. Lamborn of Griswold, IA also survived her.] Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. Irvine, who paid a beautiful and touching tribute. There was a very large attendance evidencing in no small measure the high esteem in which the departed was held in the community. Interment took place in the family lot in the Presbyterian cemetery, the pallbearers being George Schlatter, H. G. Dorchester, E. K. Hughey, Arthur Kucheman, B. W. Seaward, Jr., W. F. Schirmer. Reed Goes to Her Reward Early This Morning. Miss Mary Janet Reed passed away at 12:30 o’clock last night, after an extended illness, aged 54 years, 8 months and 29 days. The deceased was a daughter of William and Catherine [Lamborn] Reed and was born May 26, 1861, in Washington township, where all her life was spent until her removal to Bellevue in 1903. She united with the Presbyterian church July 29, 1894 and was a faithful member and very active in all branches of church work. She held various offices in the church and always performed her every duty with ability and fidelity. She will not only be missed in church circles where she occupied a prominent place, but she was also affiliated with the Order of the Eastern Star in which she was a willing worker, and official. She was a member of the board of trustees of the Presbyterian Cemetery Association and it was largely through her efforts that this association accomplished the work it has during the past few years. There is no language at our command by which we can fittingly portray the sincerity of Miss Reed’s Christian character; she truly seemed to walk hand in hand with God. Conscience guided every act. She was not only a model Christian, but an honorable woman in the highest sense that term implies. She possessed a kindly, lovable disposition, and was always ready to extend a cordial greeting that won for her the respect and esteem of all with whom she came in contact. Her death is a distinct loss to this community and her place will be difficult to fill. Besides her mother she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. R. A. Poole of Sumner, Wash., Mrs. E. S. Dyas of Bellevue and Mrs. Walter Gifford of Dubuque, and three brothers, Robert H. of Red Oak, John of Griswold and Alex of Bellevue. Her father, Hon. W. H. Reed, former state representative from Jackson county and three brothers preceded her in death. The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock from the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Howard C. Irvine with interment in the family lot in the Presbyterian cemetery.
