    1. [IAJACKSO] Dr. H. A. Powers 1856-1928
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Powers, Roberts, Lamborn,Buckhart,Harrigan,Strong Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5k.2ADE/1273 Message Board Post: Dr. H. A. Powers Dies in Hospital At Rochester Widely Known Pioneer Physician. Had Undergone Operation. Funeral Friday. By Rev. Marion L. Sunderlin Dr. Henry A. Powers Born Dubuque, Iowa. March 15, 1856. Died Rochester, Minnesota, May 14, 1928. Age, 72 years, 1 month, 29 days. Dr. Henry A. Powers was the son of P. H. and Catherine (Harrigan) Powers. He was born and reared on the home farm in Buchanan county, Iowa. Here he attended the district school, later graduating from the Jesup high school. He taught school in the winter months for four years and later was employed in the State Insane Hospital at Independence. While there he took up the study of medicine and in the fall of 1879, entered the medical school of the Iowa State University where he graduated in 1882, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. That same year he engaged in the practice of medicine in Emmetsburg and has remained here continuously to the present time, a period of forty-six years. Dr. Powers has been married twice, first in 1885, to Miss Anna Roberts of Emmetsburg to which union there were born two children, namely, Catherine Mildred, who is the wife of W. S. Buckhart, and Henry Roberts, associated with his father. The mother of these children died in 1895 and in 1898 Dr. Powers was married to Miss Sara Catherine Lamborn of Jackson county, Iowa, to which union has been born a son, Harold Wayne. Dr. Powers was a member of Earnest lodge, No. 399, A. F. & A. M.; Ernest Chapter No. 108, R. A. M.; also the Order of the Eastern Star, Esther Chapter No. 111. The Doctor has been a Mason since 1878. He was a member of the Palo Alto County Medical society, the Iowa State Medical Society and the American Medical association. He served during the years of 1895 to 1911 as a member of the school board of this city, for the years of 1902-3-4-5 as president of the board. He also served as examining physician for the draft board during the war. As a citizen, D. Powers was almost ideal. Keenly awake to the welfare of the community, he always co-operated with his fellow citizens in all efforts to advance the prosperity of the locality and to secure better moral and social conditions. As a physician and surgeon, he gave his whole heart. To him his work was the call of God. No service was too hard but he welcomed it gladly and with a smile. His heart, ever warm, grew still warmer with the years. He possessed to a marked degree the happy faculty of inspiring confidence on the part of his patients and in the sick room his genial presence and his conscious ability to cope successfully with the disease have contributed much to the enviable standing which he has long enjoyed. As a physician, he was respected and honored; as a friend he was a brother beloved. His faith was in God. True to his faith, he “fought the good fight of faith.” He endured to the end. It was here as a Christian that his true heart was ! revealed. Here the fire burned that gave strength during the long watches and over the weary miles. Here was a peace and a satisfaction that could not fail. As he had planned his life, so was it finished. He was in the harness until the last. Inactivity had no place in his thinking. His whole life had been one of giving. He had become one of our very own. He shall be missed by thousands whose lives he had touched and whose burdens he had learned to bear. Those of the immediate family who remain are the beloved wife, the children – Mr. W. S. Buckhart of Buffalo, N.Y., Henry Roberts and Harold Wayne of Emmetsburg; brother, James Powers of Glendale, California; sisters – Etta and Nellie Powers of Glendale, California, Mrs. Margaret Strong of Lake City, Iowa. “Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell. When I embark. For though from out the bourne of time and place. The flood may bear me far. I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar.” Source: Emmetsbrug Democrat, 17 May, 1928, p.1

Surnames: Mix,Lamborn Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5k.2ADE/1272 Message Board Post: Charles Mix is Dead. Charles H. Mix, who had been ill for several months, passed away at his home in this city last Saturday morning. He had made a hard struggle against the inevitable but all to no purpose. Death is no respecter of persons. The funeral was held Monday morning. There was a fair attendance. Services were conducted at the Congregational church by Rev. Glen Taylor, the pastor. The remains were interred in Evergreen cemetery. The pall bears were Geo. H. Baker, F. Freeman, W. J. Brown, E. Middleton, A. E. Troyer, and J. R. Moore. The deceased was born in Laporte county, Indiana, September 7th, 1856. When he was eleven years old his parents moved to Wisconsin, where they resided for several years. From there they moved to Minnesota where they located permanently. November 3rd, 1884, Mr. Mix married in Jackson county, this state, to Miss Dora A. Lamborn. They made their home in that locality until 1891 when they moved to Humboldt county. There they remained a year. In 1892 they came to Palo Alto, Mr. Mix having purchased the Wm. Jackman farm in Walnut township. Subsequent to that time they continued to reside permanently in this vicinity, though Mr. Mix went to the Pacific coast once or twice for the benefit of his health. Last February his physical condition became serious. He moved his family to Boise City, Idaho, but the change did not benefit him and he returned in August. After that he slowly but steadily declined until he was called to his eternal home. The surviving members of the family are Mrs. Mix, one boy and three girls. Mr. Mix was a plain, industrious, frugal man. He was painstaking, earnest and persevering and whenever he engaged in an undertaking he was sure to carry it to successful completion. He was open-minded and courteous and was a most agreeable member of society. He was a man of facts rather than of pretentions [sic]. He hated shams and, though light-hearted and jovial, he was ever serious in his professions and in his purposes. He was devotedly attached to his wife and family and no comforts or advantages that his means could supply were too good for them. He was stricken down in the prime of manhood, when life’s opportunities seemed the brightest and sustaining efforts were most needed. To the surviving wife and fatherless children they sympathy of all is sincerely extended. Source: Emmetsburg Democrat; 24 Dec. 1902; p. 5

Surnames: Lamborn, Mix, Powers,Crisman Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5k.2ADE/1271 Message Board Post: MRS. CHARLES MIX DEAD. Remains Were Laid to Rest in Emmetsburg Yesterday. The first of the week our citizens learned with deep sorrow of the death of Mrs. Charles Mix, which occurred in the Presbyterian hospital at Chicago last Saturday evening. She was taken to that institution a short time before for a surgical operation. After it was performed she seemed to be recovering nicely but a change for the worse followed and her useful and edifying life was brought to a close. The remains were brought to this city Monday morning. They were taken to the home of Mrs. Dr. H. A. Powers, sister of the deceased, to await interment in Evergreen cemetery, where the body of Mr. Mix was laid to rest in December, 1902. The funeral was held yesterday. Services were conducted at the Congregational church, the pastor, Rev. J. E. Brereton, officiating. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors. Dora A. Lamborn was born in Jackson county, Iowa, March 23, 1860. Her early life was spent in that locality. November 2, 1884, she was married to Charles R. Mix. Mr. and Mrs. Mix came to this county in 1892. They lived on a farm for a number of years, after which they became residents of this city. Mr. Mix died December, 1902. In 1908 Mrs. Mix and her son and daughters moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where they could have better educational advantages than were afforded them in Emmetsburg. The surviving members of the family are the three daughters, Mrs. Elsa Mix Crisman and Misses Iva and Hazel Mix and one son – Ira Mix. Mr. Lamborn, the father of Mrs. Mix, and four brothers, W. H., L. [sic] H.; Charles and Robert Lamborn, live at Green Island, this state. Mrs. Powers is the only sister. All were present at the funeral. Mrs. Mix resided in this community for a number of years and those who had the good fortune to know her found her a staunch friend, a kind and obliging neighbor and one of the best of wives and mothers. She was a lady of tireless industry. She would never neglect any duty that she felt required her attention. She toiled tirelessly and faithfully for her home, for her children, for her friends, and for society. She was not in any sense pretentious. Others might spend their time and effort in pursuit of honors and enjoy them, but she was satisfied with her station in life and was ready at all times to perform any act that a sense of duty demanded of her. Her mildness, equanimity and unaffectedness won for her the sincere regard of her friends and associates. Her husband died a number of years ago, subsequent to which time the care and education of her son and daughters demanded her special care. However, Providence was generous to her and she had the advantage of ample mea! ns. She used them wisely and conscientiously, showing clearly that she was actuated by the motives of the true Christian mother. Though they are now full grown and are amply able to provide for themselves, in their various stations in life, they will not of course be unmindful of her many years of deep usefulness as members of society. They have the genuine sympathy of their friends of a decade ago, and our many other citizens in the grief that has come to them. Source: Emmetsburg Democrat; 16 Apr 1913; p. 8
