This is the only Bailey bio. in the 1888 henry Co IA history: GEORGE BAILEY A resident of Salem and Jackson Twp, he was born 16 Jan 1823 in Belmont, OH, the son of Wyatt and Miranda (Wooton) Bailey. His family on both sides were of English ancestry. His maternal grandfather was Edward Wooton, and his paternal grandfather was William Bailey, and his grandmother was Rebecca Banford. The families were residents of Loudon Co VA, and went to Belmont Co., OH in 1809 Edward Wooton was a slave owner in Virginia but liberated his slaves at an early day. After he settled in OH, his former slaves came and settled near Edward. Wyatt and Miranda (Wooton) Bailey married in Ohio. Their children were: Elihu, who married Rachel Ewers, res. Richland Co WI Jane, deceased, m. Benjamin Patterson of Belmont Co OH George, who married Elizabeth Frazier in 1854 Abigail, deceased, m.Evan Plummer, also of Belmont Co. OH William m. Lydia Blackledge of WI. He enlisted in the 20th Wisconsin Vol. Infantry, and served in the battles of Prairie Grove, AR, and Vicksburg. He contracted a disease while in the army, of which he died at his home in WI. Wilson m. Mary Vickers, res. Jackson Twp, Henry Co. IA Elam, deceased, m. Marion Dowdney, and also served in a WI regiment.He took ill and died while at home on furlough. Edward d. unmarried in OH Rachel died in infancy David m. Belle Shaddock, res. in IL, he was a brave soldier in the 52nd IL regiment. He was engaged in Pitsburg Landing. Wyatt Bailey died in 1851 on the OH farm. His widow and children moved to WI four years later, in Richland Co. George learned the blacksmith trade in OH, and moved in 1845 to West Point, Lee Co IA, then to the village of Keokuk, and six months later to Salem in 1848. He engaged as a teamster and freighted goods from Sacramento to Green Valley, CA. From there he went to Columbia on a schooner, finally reaching Salem, OR. He was employed working on machinery of the Kanamah, the 1st steamer that rav about the falls of the Willamette River. He next with several companions bought a lot of ponies and mules and started with a pack train for diggings in CA. Near Yreka they sunk a shaft which paid handsomely for six months. He next set out for Oregon 320 miles away, with a gun and two blankets. He reached Corvallis 8 days later. He returned home by the Isthmus of Panama. He married Elizabeth Frazier, dau. of Thomas and Hanna (Hoccet) Frazier. Mrs. Bailey is now the only one left in Henry County, residing there from 1837. Children were Dora L., m. B. L. Wood, reside Wyanet, IL Eugene was accidentally injured at age 7, and was blind from that time He attended college for the blind at Vinton and became an accomplished scholar.
