    3. This is not a commercial and I am not connected with the company in any way, but I have been using a little program that is really neat for viewing and sorting graphics. I am a bit of a graphics junkie. I am always downloading new graphics and the author's logos thinking I may use them someday. Then when I go to use them I have to search for the artist's logo. I have tried several but like ACDC the best as I can view them in thumbnail or larger format with the click of a mouse. I do a lot of sorting into categories with it. If you are developing a new webpage you might find it useful. http://www.acdsystems.com/products/index.htm

    1. re:Help messages
    2. Norma F. Jennings
    3. If you have sent a personal e-mail to me rather than to the list, I must apologize for being unable to answer all of your messages. I have been swamped lately from people clicking on my e-mail address on my many different web sites or by hitting "reply to" on the list which sends the messages back to me. In addition, the spammers have been unusually busy the last few weeks and packing my mailbox with trash that Rootsweb has filtered out and sent to me instead of to the list. These have to be reviewed and usually dumped but just one more necessary nuisance task. While ideally I would like to answer all messages sent directly to me, it just isn't always possible to do so and still add new material on-line for all. I would like to encourage all of you to post to the list where others may also be able to help you rather than sending the messages directly to me. We now have nearly 100 subscribers each on the Henry County and Louisa County mailing lists so your question has a much better possibility of bringing results if posted on the list instead of contacting me. Thank you for your consideration and compliance with this request. I would also like to thank those who have sent material for me to add to the sites that I still hope to use in the future. It is appreciated but time has prevented my getting it coded for the Internet. I am still trying to figure out why my obituary submissions form is not working on the Henry County site. It was working up until November but is not accepting the write ins right now. I hope to add more write in forms to the Louisa site as well so others can add obituaries and birth, death and marriage records but this all takes a lot of time that is difficult to find this time of year. 1. Abbe-Baltimore Cemetery
    2. Owens
    3. My cousin recently found the Abbe-Baltimore Cemetery in Baltimore Twp., Sec. 18. Many of our family are buried there. The last burial seemed to be over a hundred years ago. It was difficult to find and there really wasn't even a road to it, yet the cemetary itself was neatly mowed. We are curious about who is maintaining this tiny cemetery. My favorite cemetery in Henry Co. is Hickory Grove, also filled with our family which includes the Johnsons, Skiptons,Winters and Walter families. Thanks. Dee

    1. Center Cemetery, Thanks
    2. Thank you all for you respponses to my query on where is Center Cemetery. I now feel confident that we will be able to drive right to it later this summer. It will be nice to give our respects to the CARTER, REILLY, and ZINGG relatives buried there. You people have certainly proved that the RootsWeb lists are definitely worth subscribing to. Thanks again Penny Brown Ft Myers Beach, Florida

    1. Center Cemetery, Jefferson Twp
    2. Would someone please help me find where Jefferson Township is in Henry County, and where Center Cemetery is in Jefferson County. The only maps I can find do not have the townships on them. I have tried some of the map places on the net, with no success. I found some of my CARTER family listed there through the Henry Co., Iowa GenWeb pages. We are planning a trip that way the end of July, and would like to pay our respects. Penny Brown Ft. Myers Beach, Florida

    3. Tim, Have you checked this publication: Title: Henry County, Iowa [name of township and/or name of cemetery] / copied by members of the Des Moines County Genealogical Society. -- Des Moines, Iowa : Iowa Genealogical Society, [1987?]-[v.2] Old City Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. This is from the online catalogue at the Wisconsin State Historical Society Library in Madison, WI. I searched from the Madcat (Web) link at http://www.library.wisc.edu. The call number is F627 H5 H462 1987. I have been to Mt. Pleasant several times but have never had to look up any ancestors in its cemeteries. It seems that there is the large main cemetery (Forest Home, I think) in the south part of town and another smaller cemetery just west of the main cemetery. I don't remember the name. It might be a Catholic cemetery. Sorry I can't help more. Leslie W. Saint Timothy Staudenmaier wrote: > > Can anyone on this list tell me if Burges Cemetery in Mount Pleasant an > active cemetery. 3. Another old e-mail responding to a question about what a "pole" was in reference to measurements is forwarded for your information >Reading through The Researcher's guide to American Geneology by Val D. Greenwood, Geneological Publishing Co., Baltimore, Md. I came across the following on pg. 352. An acre is 43,560 square feet or 160 square rods; a chain is sixty six feet or twenty two yards (100 links); a furlong is 660 feet or 220 yards (ten chains); a link is 7.92 inches, there are 25 links in a rod and 100 links (or four rods) in a chain; a mile is 5280 feet (eighty chains, 320 rods, or eight furlongs); a perch is 5.5 yards or 16.5 feet, and is also called a rod or a pole; a rood varies from 5.5 yards to eight yards. Rood might also be used to describe an area equal to 1/4 of an acre.

    3. In going through my old e-mail box after switching hard drives and starting over I found this tidbit I thought I would share with our subscribers. Norma In a message dated 98-02-20 06:30:25 EST, afranks1@juno.com writes Sept-Oct, 1997, Newsletter - Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County "Source: Ancestors West, SSBCGS, Vol 20, No l, Fall 1993, South Bend (IN) Area Genealogical Society via Julie Burnett, Sue in Arizona and Judy Nordgren SMCAGS "In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing, as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. 2. Leslie W. Saint
    3. Penney, I really didn't answer you question before. The courthouse is open from 8 or 9am to 5pm. They let you do your own copying in the Clerk's and Recorder's office, except for vital statistics, which they copy and hand stamp "Not For Legal Use". Here are some address I found. Doris Sharp 204 E. Cleveland St. New London, IA 52645-1710 (319) 367-5576 She will do a look up for you on behalf of the Henry Co. Gen. Soc. The cost is $10/hr plus copying costs. She is very helpful person to know and talk to. County Clerk Susie Kuhens 319-385-2632 100 E Washington St Box 176 Mt Pleasant, IA 52641 Henry County Tourism 502 North Washington Mt. 1. Re: Courthouse Address
    2. Leslie W. Saint
    3. Penny, The Recorder's Office in the Henry Co., IA courthouse has all the land grantor/grantee indexes from the beginning of land records. They also have land transfer indexes that you may fill in any gaps that the grantor/grantee indexes miss. The deeds are all there. The Clerk's office has probate court files. Some of the older district court files are in the basement and are inaccessable to the public. I suggest you write to the Henry Co. Genealogical Society if you want to look at them. I had good sucess with getting an old district court file photocopied by Doris Sharp from New London, IA. There are also town lot indexes in the Recorder's office. The Recorder's office has the birth, death, and marriage records. The Mt. Pleasant Public Library is a good place to stop also. There is a small area for genealogy. They have Henry Co. Gen. Soc. books with abstracted records of cemeteries, birth, deaths and marriages; county histories, a filing cabinet with Town and Township files; microfilms of the Mt. Pleasant and Salem newspapers; etc. I hope this helps. Leslie W. 2. Will someone please help me on this? My husband and I are planning a trip to Iowa from Florida this July, to search for info on his CARTER family. We have a P. O. Box address for the Henry County Courthouse, but knowing from past experience what some response time has been, we are hoping to have the physical address and open times before we leave. I know it is very difficult to find info before 1880, but at least there should be some land records. Joel CARTER left Ontario, Canada after 1870, stopped for a while in Mt. Pleasant, and then on to Nebraska, probably around 1880. Hoping to find some sort of record on the CARTER family. Any help is deeply appreciated. Penny Webster Brown, in Florida

    3. Karen, Sorry no information on GINN OR GRANT FAMILY CEMETERY. Do you know what township the Grant Family Cemetery is in? Iowa did not require the counties to keep birth and death records until 1880. Some counties kept these records earlier without the state mandate but I haven't seen any in the Henry Co. courthouse. I just searched the State Hitorical Society of WI catalogue and found: 1. Author: Colby, Ruth Brown, 1922- Title: Henry County, Iowa marriages, 1836-1857 / compiled by Ruth L. Colby. -- Hartford, Ky. : McDowell Publications,1977, c1978. Location: Historical Society Library Pamphlet Collection Call Number:79- 3776 2. Title: Henry County, Iowa births / compiled by Henry County Genealogical Society. -- Des Moines, IA : Iowa Genealogical Society, c1991- Location: Historical Society Library Pamphlet Collection Call Number: 91- 2597 HOLDINGS: v.1 (1991). 3. Title: Henry County, Iowa [name of township and/or name of cemetery] / copied by members of the Des Moines County Genealogical Society. -- Des Moines, Iowa : Iowa Genealogical Society, [1987?]- Call Number: F627 H5 H462 1987 HOLDINGS: v.1-15 (1987-1991). Location: Historical Society Library Call Number: F627 H5 H462 1987 (copy 2) Notes: Includes indexes. Contents: [v.1] Canaan Township, Sheridan Cemetery, Trinity Cemetery (2 copies) -- [v.2] Old City Cemetery, Mt.Pleasant, Iowa -- [v.3] Marion Township Cemeteries -- [v.4] Salem Township, Cedar Creek Cemetery -- [v.5] Salem Township, Hillsboro Cemetery -- [v.6] Salem Township, Salem East Cemetery -- [v.7] Salem South Cemetery (Quaker Cemetery) -- [v.8] Wayland Cemetery --[v.9] New London Township, Pleasant Hill Cemetery -- [v.10] Wayne Twp. -- [v.11] Tippecanoe Twp. -- [v.12] Scott Twp. -- [v.13] Jefferson Twp. -- [v.14] Greenmound Cemetery, Trenton Twp. -- [v.15] Tenton Twp., except Greenmound. Other large State Historical Libraries might have these books. The Henry Co. Genealogical Society will do a look up for you. I don't know the costs. Their address is Henry Co Gen Society, Box 81, Mt. Pleasant IA 52641-0081 The counties did keep marriage records from the beginning. Leslie W.
