If any of you have had difficulties accessing the Henry County webpages the past few days, please be patient. The website is being completely revised and it takes a little while for all the changes to take place. For instance, GenConnect has been installed and a new Search Engine that will search the entire site has been installed. Unfortunately, the site is rather large and it will take the Search Engine three or four days to completely index the whole site so you can access it. By this time next week, it should all be running smoothly. The old CCHELPER queries were very labor intensive on my part as the system has not been working well since my computer crashed a few months ago and the database was getting rather large. GenConnect seemed to be the answer and it allows the readers to participate more fully in more areas. I hope you enjoy the revisions when all the wrinkles are ironed out. Norma Jennings

Cindy, I am sending you off list a jpg formatted partial map of Henry Co., IA. It has Mt. Pleasant and the roads West to Rome that will lead you to Grant Cemetery. Make sure you get a copy of this map, free, at the Henry Co. Courthouse. While you are there take note of the two "Roster of Soldiers from Henry County, Iowa in the War of 1861-1865" bronze plaques on the second floor outside the Recorder's and Clerk's offices. You will probably be going there anyway. Also look up at the stained glass skylight in the center of the lobby. The courthouse is on U.S. 36. Phone numbers: 1. Recorder's Office 319-385-0765 2. Clerk's Office 319-385-2632 The Mt. Pleasant Public Library has a good genealogical room. The address is 200 N. Main St. Phone 319-385-1490. I suggest a trip to the Lwelling House in Salem, South of Mt. Pleasant. It was a stop on the underground railroad and has a trap door to the crawl space where they Lwellings hid runaway slaves. They have several scrapbooks with obituaries, wedding notices, etc. in the lobby. They also have a collection of old photos of unidentified people that were donated. Also there are 2 quilts with names embroidered. One was made to raise funds for a new Methodist Church in Salem after a fire in 1903. The other quilt has many Quaker names and others embroidered, made in 1927. There is a list of names for each quilt. Maybe your ancestors name is on one of these. I don't live in Henry Co. but visit many times a year and am getting to know my way around. Leslie W. Saint
My husband and I will be in Henry County IA sometime during the week of Aug. 8-15. I recently received information that there is a GRANT family cemetery located near Rome, IA that is the resting place of many of my ancestors on my ggrandfather's (Robert E. Grant son of Harvey Grant and Mary McBride) side of the family and my ggrandmother's (Mary Ann Ginn daughter of John Henry Ginn and Clarissa Jane White) side of the family. Can anyone give me specific directions to that cemetery? We are traveling from Western Oklahoma and will be visiting Decatur Co for my husbands family, Atha, then Henry Co. for those mentioned above and Washington Co. for Allen's, Maxwells, Stephens. Much to do but very excited. Any other advice/info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for a quick response - this is a "spur of the moment - take the opportunity when it comes" trip. Cindy
Hi Bill, I have a 2nd cousin that married Inez Garmoe. My dad always said the name really was DeGarmoe. She was born in Glasgow, Iowa. She passed away in Salem, Iowa several years ago. She was married to Elwood Leroy Holaday. I wish I could provide you more information, but the only daughter I know the location of has always been angry with her mother and did not get along. I tried to get family information from her several times but she has not given anything, even birth dates to me. If this is of any help, let me know and I'll see what else I can dig up. Hello, Several DeGarmo families lived in Henry County, IA in the mid 1800's to early 1900's. I'm looking to contact the ancestors of these families, as women change their names when they marry and are difficult to trace. Anyone who has a connection to a DeGarmo family member no matter how remote I'd like to hear from you. Just recently I found some Garmoe families living in Henry County, and I'm wondering if the Garmoe's are related to the DeGarmo family. Can anyone help me? Bill DeGarmo

I'm trying to determine just how bad the geocities/yahoo merger is screwing up my ability to use the genealogy e-mail lists. Sorry...
I have just reviewed and tweaked the Post an Obituary Form and it seems to be working again. If any of you have obituaries that you would like to post on-line which may generate some correspondence on your surnames, please feel free to submit them. This is not limited to new obituaries but can be obituareies of any date. I know the form is misleading, but in time the obituaries will be posted and sorted into CCHELPER the same way the queries are now being handled. This will put them into a chronological and researcher sorted pagess.
