    1. Henry Co. Directory Lookup, please!
    2. Tonja Hetrick
    3. Hello to all fellow researchers! A cousin sent me photocopied pages from a historical Directory of Henry County, I have no idea what year, but she photo-copied an entry for a common ancestor, William Kirkpatrick. Well, in doing so, she caught the leading edge of another ancestor of mine, and I would really love to know what the full entry says for Samuel Stoner(1817-1849, already deceased at time of entry)who married Susannah Hawk. The entry would be on page 644 of the directory my cousin copied, lower left, inside corner. Thanks for any assistance! 1. Anderson/Rainey Families
    2. James Collins
    3. Hi, I am brand new to the list, and I am researching the Anderson and Rainey families of Henry Co., Iowa. I have gotten all of the information on this side from my grandmother's cousin who tried to get started on genealogy before she passed away a few years ago. It looks like my ancestors came to Henry Co., IA in the 1850s. Peter Anderson and his wife Sarah came to Henry Co., Iowa from Tennessee. They had several children. Their daughter Martha (who I descend from) was born August 25, 1842 in Tennessee and it saya that she died November 13, 1909 in Lowell, Iowa and is buried there. Martha Anderson married John Rainey, the son of James Rainey and his wife Margaret who were Irish immigrants. The records that I have say that they were married January 25, 1865 in Lowell, Iowa. John Rainey (husband of Martha Anderson) was born in Ohio, probably Belmont Co., Ohio. THe records say that he died and was buried in Lowell Iowa. John Rainey and his wife Martha ran a store in Lowell, or Mt. Pleasant, Iowa probably in the 1860s-1900s??? I do know that they had a store and that John and Martha had at least 3 children. Lee Ellen Rainey, b. September 23, 1867 d. January 21, 1963 Eugene Rainey, b. Abt 1870 Lucy Rainey My Lee Ellen Rainey married Issac Newton Williams December 28, 1885. It appears from what I am working with that Issac moved by himself from Greene Co., Pennsylvania and married Lee Ellen. Lee Ellen and Issac lived in Mt. Pleasant Iowa from around 1885 to 1909, then they moved to Perry, Oklahoma. All of Issac and Ellen's children were born in Mt. Pleasant. Charles Floyd Williams, b. 1887 Martha, b. 1899 Ethel, b. 1905 Bessie Mae, b. 1893 If anyone know of this family, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I have not yet made it back to the library in Houston to look at census or anything, and I hope that maybe some of you will be able to help me. Thanks, James Collins Angleton, Texas

    1. Thomas McMillen (McMillan) Query
    2. I am trying to find more about my ggg-grandfather, one Thomas McMillen (often spelled McMillan). It is known (by me) that he emigrated to what is now Henry County and was a farmer in Center Township. He took his wife Mary (Hoagland) and several children, including I believe a son Thomas. He was born in York (now Adams County PA) in 1778 or 1884 (I have conflicting information). At an early age, he moved to the Pittsburg area. In 1812, he was a captain of a crew at Erie, PA helping to build the ships for Oliver Perry used in the Battle of Lake Erie (1913). It appears he was married in western PA before coming to Ohio in 1814. >From 1816 to 1823, he was Wayne County, Ohio's 1st state representative and state senator. He was a farmer and millowner. In 1840, he went to Iowa and according the the Wayne County, Ohio history was involved in the the Iowa territorial legislature. I also suspect that he was a Mason in Ohio and also belonged to the Mt. Pleasant Mason group. I wrote to the Mason's in Mt. Pleasant but have yet to hear from them. He died in 1852 and presumed buried in a cemetery close to Mt. Pleasant. I have little actual record of his existence/activities in Mt. Pleasant, other then what is in the Henry County, IA history, listed under is son Thomas and the 1850 IA Federal census. His will ( probated in Wayne County, Ohio) was listed as missing on the county microfilm records. I think the original records have been since destroyed. I also found out that there is a McMillan Park in Mt. Pleasant. Is there some connection here? I am planning on visiting Mt. Pleasant next July to explore his history, but would appreciate any information. . In the meantime any infor or just leads about him and/or his immediate family or more recent descendents would be most welcome. If it is desirable, just send me a personal e-mail with your e-mail, mail addresses and or phone numbers. Roger Troutman RogerTrout@aol.com

    1. Tucker, John
    2. Looking on info for John William Tucker, B 8-6-1860 in HenryCounty, Mt. Pleasant, IA. Married Nancy Belle Tallman in 1884 in Putnam Co. Missouri, had 2 children- Frank Marion and Elsi- and in 1888 went with the Tallman family to Mt. Shasta, California, where he died in 1944. Have absolutely no other info on him, although I have a lot on the Tallman's. Frank Marion Tucker was my grandfather, came back to MO in 1912 to marry my grandmother and died in Jefferson City. I have John's death certificate but it shows "no record" in regard to his parent's names. Have looked for almost 3 years now and would really like to find his roots. My info stops with him. Would dearly love info. Please e mail.....thanks Pat (Tucker) Rosen, Jefferson City, MO

    3. Hello fellow researchers. I've found my gr gr grandmother, Malinda Lyle (or Melinda, as the census has it), on the 1850 Census for Henry County. It lists her parents as William and Ellen Lyle (30 and 24 yrs, respectively, both born Ohio), and a brother as John (4 yrs, born Iowa). Can anyone located any deeds or other records for this family that might pinpoint where in Ohio William and Ellen came from? Thanks. 3. Leslie Saint asked for information on Henry and Des Moines County people who went to the California Gold Rush in 1849. I've only begun to work seriously on this subject, so this is just a preliminary report. There were at least two groups that went west that year. (1) The "Mt. Pleasant Mining Company" trip left from Mt. Pleasant in early April 1849. Some of the party took most of their supplies by riverboat down the Mississippi and then up the Missouri River to St. Joseph, where they met the rest of the party. They crossed the Missouri about May 1. There were 15 wagons, 42 men, l woman and a child on this trip. There are two accounts that I have seen: (a) The journal of P. C. Tiffany (manuscript in the Beinecke Library, Yale University, New Haven, CT) - Tiffany gives these names for people who were on the trip: S. BLACK, John P. GRANTHAM, HERMAN, HIGGINS, Jasper HILL, L. S.HUTTON, LUSK, MOORE, PRESLY, RICE, RUCHE, RUCKER, and P. C. TIFFANY. (b) Jasper Hill's letters (published by D. Nunis 1964 as "The letters of a young gold miner, covering the adventures of Jasper S. Hill during the California Gold Rush 1849-1852) - Hill gives a list of the people on the trip; but unfortunately I don't have it in my files. The only name I have is of the one woman, Mrs. LOTSPEICH who had her son with her. (2) "Captain Ikenberry's" Company - Actually, the leader was Samuel Eikenbary/Eikenbery, who lived near Danville, Des Moines County, Iowa. His party consisted of 23 ox teams and about 65 men. They crossed the Missouri River at St. Joseph on April 20. The names from this trip that I've so far confirmed are: William DEARDORFF, Samuel EIKENBARY, Edward FORD, J. KELLEY, Peter KESSLER, (maybe) John D. LOVE, Asa McCULLY, David McCULLY, Samuel MILLER, __ MORROW, William PATTON, D. REDDING, William SCOTT, Amos STARKEY, John L. STARKEY, Samuel STARKEY, Charles W. WASHBURN, John Morrison WATERS, and William WATERS. I have some information on the Eikenbary company names, if anyone is interested. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who can tell me anything about the people named, or anyone else you know who was on the trip. Sandy Wilbur http://pweb.netcom.com/~symbios/geneal.html Leslie W.
