I am looking for information on the decendants of Henry Bigelow Paul and Sarah Lockwood. There Children were Alva L., Martha Helen, Alfreda Leona, Susan M., Nancy B. and Horace Edwin. Henry and Sarah were married at Mt Pleasant, Oct 4, 1855. Henry died prior to 1875. The lands on which they were living were owned by Henry's father Alvah of Royalton, Fairfield, Ohio. Alvah died in 1875. Alvah's will stipulates that the lands were to "pass to the children of my deceased son Bigelow as soon as the youngest living one of these shall have arrived at hthe age of eighteen years." If Horace Edwin survived the land would have passed in 1888. Apparantly some of the land was rented out, as Sarah (not mentioned by name) was to have exclusive use of the proceeds of the rents. Sarah and Alfreda who married F. W. Sullivan moved to Petersburg, Nebraska, sometime in the 1880's. The rest I assume remained in Iowa. Charles Paul, Jr.

Hello fellow researchers, I'd be interested in knowing what caused Henry Co residents to migrate to Nebraska/Kansas too. I have some that moved first to Kearney Co Nebraska in 1887, then to Gosper Co Nebraska six years later. Family tradition had it that they participated in the "Nebraska Land Rush", but there's no mention of any such event anywhere I've looked. I even had a volunteer searching the Nebraska area newspapers for mention of an event to draw new people to the area, since both counties had already been pretty well established at the time. I can't even find any land grants for my ancestors, so it doesn't look like they even took advantage of the Homesteading Act, let alone participate in any land rush. So that leaves me wondering why they left all the rest of their family to go to Nebraska? Does anyone on this list have access to Henry Co newspapers from that time period? Maybe we'd find ads or something drawing settlers out? Just a thought. I sent this same reply to Linda but thought I'd add it to the list in case someone else has some information. Hi Linda, the names in your Clay & Hamilton Co. NE biography book don't tie with mine (as far as I know) but many of my Henry Co. Iowa ancestors moved to Thayer Co. NE and Republic Co. KS. Wondering what caused them to migrate to that specific area - does your book indicate anything like that? I'm researching GRANT, McBRIDE, GINN and WHITE - all from the Rome, Henry Co., Iowa area. Have a great day. Cindy in OK Linda wrote: < >> _______________________________________________________

Hi Barb: I'm not sure if both funeral homes were in business that early, however, I suspect they both were. I used to walk by Beatty Funeral Home every day while walking to and from school. I would check with the Henry County Vital Records Office: Henry County Clerk, l00 E. Washington, Mt. Pleasant, IA 5264l-l93l; (3l9)385-8480. The Public Library will look that up for you too. I don't have their phone number or e-mail right in front of me (and can't remember where I put it). Hope this helps. Hi Linda This is what I have on my Joy family Eli Joy b. 16 Feb 1825 in Washington Co, Pa and migrated to Louisa Co, Iowa around 1838. He married Ann Hamilton on 23 Dec 1847 in Louisa Co, Ia. and they lived in Florence Twp, Louisa Co, Iowa in 1850. I computed Ann's birth from her date of death as 25 Jun 1829 and she died 26 Apr 1852 in Louisa Co and is buried in Bethel Cemetery. Her father was Samuel H Hamilton. Eli and Ann had 2 children, Edgar b. 1848 in Iowa and Mary Samantha b. 1850 in Iowa. Mary married Oliver E. Shipman on 13 Feb 1870. Eli later married Mary Ann Phinney on 8 Sep 1853. I assume that he had moved to Yellow Springs Twp, DesMoines Co, Iowa some time after Ann's death as that is where the Phinney family lived. I assume the wedding took place there also. Eli and Mary had 5 children: Lydia Ann b. 1856 in Iowa. She married Samuel Kerr on 22 Apr 1875 James E. b. 15 Oct 1857 in Iowa. He married Martha Ann Heizer on 20 Feb 1879. He died 4 July 1935. James and Martha are buried in Northfield Cemetery next to Eli and Mary. I have a picture of each of their gravesites. A female initial J. b. May 1860 in Iowa Catherine Julia b. 1862 in Iowa Martin Luther (my gr grandfather) b. 22 Sep 1865 in Iowa m. Nellie Olive Clark on 13 Feb 1895. Martin died 26 Nov 1924 in Mt Pleasant, Iowa I have more info on the Joy's but nothing earlier than Eli. If you want more, let me know. Ron Garmoe PapaRG@aol.com

Patt I came accross a couple of articles that may pertain to your JOY line. The articles are about the "Old Settlers" of Salem, Henry Co, Ia. in the late 1800s. There may be more articles than the two I have. The 2 addresses for them are: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ia/henry/history/oldset.txt ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ia/henry/history/oldset2.txt you may find other leads to your JOYs there also. Good luck Ron Garmoe
Hi Linda Yes it is the same Eli Joy. He married Ann in 23 dec 1847 in Louisa Co, Ia. I have it that Ann is buried in Bethel Cemetery in Louisa Co. but have been unable to confirm that. I would love to swap info with you on these families. Ron Garmoe
Hi Patt I am familiar with Ruben Joy but I am unable to connect him or his family with my Joy line. As far back as I have gotten with the Joy line is Eli Joy who apparently came to Louisa Co. Iowa with at least on brother named William around 1838 and I believe they came from Penn. Ron Garmoe PapaRG@aol.com
I believe Mary Ann FITCH was born 1844 to James FITCH & Rebecca DICKSON. On 18 Apr 1867 she married Job(e) Allen HAINES (1847-1906, s/o Job(e) HAINES & Mary BLACK) in Henry Co IA. She died 18 Feb 1926 probably in Mills Co IA and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery near Tabor. I believe Mary & Job(e) HAINES had the following children: James Franklin HAINES (1869-1951) m. Mattie WEAVER Rebecca Jane HAINES (1872- ? ) m. ? WELLS, m. ? WOODS Joseph O. HAINES (1874-1930) m. HAYES William Job Alonzo HAINES (1885-1951) m. Maud WEAVER I'd particularly like to find Mary Ann (FITCH) HAINES' date & place of birth and place of death.
