Dell was born on August 3, 1916, to Michael and Jessie (Jenkins) O'Day in the Galland's Grove area northeast of Dunlap. Dell attended Galland's Grove Country School. He then began farming with his parents. Dell married Ruth Hartwig on March 21, 1937 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Harlan. The couple farmed in the Galland's Grove area on Dell's parents' farm. The couple moved into Dunlap in mid 1970s. Dell was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He particularly loved farming and his "B" John Deere tractor. Dell also loved horses and he was especially interested in racehorses. Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Hubert, Tom, Bill, Mort and John; one sister, Marguerite O'Day; infant daughter; and daughter, Shelley O'Day-she was 18 years old and had Cerebral Palsy. Survivors include his wife, Ruth O'Day of Dunlap, Iowa; son, Bill O'Day and his wife Bonnie of Dunlap, Iowa; two daughters, Peggy and her husband Kenny Wilke of Omaha, Neb., Pat and her husband Gary Schmidt of Harlan, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two sisters-in-law, Edith Jenkins of Woodbine, Iowa and Rita Hartwig of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday morning, October 25, 2006, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap at 10:30 a.m. with Father Paul Strittmatter officiating. Musicians were Marilyn Grote and Jerry Baldwin. Selections were "How Great Thou Art," "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Grandpa" and "Danny Boy." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Honorary pallbearers were Giselle Wilke, Terri Talacko, Brenda Fahle, Belinda O'Day, Benita Foley. Pallbearers were Kevin Wilke, Brad O'Day, Brett Schmidt, Bart Schmidt, Tom O'Day, Fritz Baldwin.
