Kean, 75, of Holton, Kan., died Sunday, September 24, 2000, at the Midlands Hospice House in Topeka, Kan. He was born October 6, 1924 in Sabetha, Kan., the son of William E. and Anna C. Cummins Kean. He graduated from Dawson High School in 1941. Mr. Kean was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 4219, both in Holton, Kan., and a former member of the American Legion. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. April 3, 1946 he married Norma Jean Law at Camp Crowder, Mo. Mr. Kean farmed near Dunlap and owned and operated Kean's Seed Market in Dunlap. He and his wife later retired to the Lake of the Ozarks in the mid 1980's. In 1991 they moved to Holton, Kan. He was preceded in death by one brother, William "Bill" Kean. Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean; two sons, John David Kean, Jr. of St. Joseph, Mo., and Harold William Kean of Manson; three daughters, Susan Marie Berens of Yuma, Ariz., Paula Jean Turner of Littleton, Colo., and Carolyn Melby of Soldier; four sisters, Ruth Kuster of Harlan, Helen Wells of Sabetha, Kan., Marie Nestor of Albuquerque, N.M., and Virginia Moran of Jamestown, N.D.; seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton, Kan. Burial was made at 2:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Dawson, Neb. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, Kan., was in charge of arrangements.
