Survivors include 5 children, Edward Shumate (Peggy) of Dunlap, Ila Kunze (Otto) of Ute, Fred Shumate (Chong) of Dow City, Judy Brandt (Richard) of Council Bluffs and Tom Shumate (Laura) of Dunlap; 1 sister, Mary Ellen Segebart of Dow City; 1 sister-in-law, Kathryn Kline of Denison. She attended country school and Dunlap High School. Maymie met Walter Shumate on Memorial Day of 1934 while attending the cemetery services. The couple was married on October 17, 1934, in Woodbine, Iowa. They farmed west of Dunlap until 1944, and then they moved east of town. Walter died on August 10, 1973. Maymie married Thom Gilbreath in 1976. He died in 1987. Maymie was an active member of the Congregational Church. Walter and Maymie enjoyed going to the horse races. The couple also enjoyed square dances, barn dances and farm life. They had a large garden and canned whatever they could. Maymie enjoyed bingo and she loved to sew, crochet and quilt. She shared her beautiful quilts by giving them to her children and grandchildren Maymie died on Friday, January 19, 2007, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 87 years, eight months, and 24 days. Maymie was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Walter and Tom; son, Walter; two brothers, Ted and Ray Kline; and two sisters, Blanche Smith and Catherine Rose. She is survived by five children, Edward (Peggy) Shumate of Dunlap, Iowa, Ila Jane (Otto) Kunze of Ute, Iowa, Fred (Chong) Shumate of Dow City, Iowa, Judy (Richard) Brandt of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Tom (Laura) Shumate of Dunlap, Iowa; 48 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren;30 great great grandchildren; sister Mary Ellen (Raymond) Segebart of Dow City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Kathryn Kline of Denison, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
