He attended country school and Dunlap High School. Lyle and his brother, Lloyd, would travel to Nebraska to bale hay for farmers. Lyle attended aircraft school in Omaha. He then went to Seattle, Washington and worked at Boeing. In 1942, Lyle was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Alaska and worked on the Alaskan Highway. He also had a pet bear! Lyle married Fern Hein on February 4, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Donna. The couple farmed until they moved to Grand Island, Nebraska where they managed the Pine Crest Motel. After returning to the Dunlap area, Lyle worked at the Dunlap Coop. Lyle and Fern moved to town in 1995, but they farmed as a team until 2002. Fern died October 20, 2005. Lyle was baptized and was an active member of the Congregational Church. He enjoyed playing bingo and euchre. He also enjoyed gardening and farming. Lyle died on Monday, January 22, 2007, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 90 years, five months, and five days. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Fern; brother, Lloyd; and two sisters, Maribelle Heiden and Hazel Dawson. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Gaul & special friend Kevin Reisz of Dunlap, Iowa; sister Dorothy Hein of Dunlap, Iowa; three grandchildren, Matthew Gaul of Omaha, Nebraska, Heather Gaul of Woodbine, Iowa, Jonathan Gaul of Dunlap, Iowa; two cousins, Genevieve Smith of Dunlap, Iowa, Carmen Adams of Woodbine, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Musicians were Bev Price and Eve Vonne Muff. Music included "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder," Congregational hymn "In the Garden" and recorded selections "D! addy's Hands" and "When I Get To Where I'm Going." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Pallbearers were Cliff Allmon, Jeff Berens, Bob Hein, Kenny Hein, Myrlen Hein, Mike Johnson. Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap was in charge of arrangements.
