Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa, with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial with military rites followed in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Kevin McKinley was born April 30, 1953, in Ames, to Chelsea Wilford and Mary Louise (Williams) McKinley. He graduated from Tech High in Des Moines. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War as a military policeman. On Aug. 21 1976, he married Debra Danelle Shumate in Adel. He retired from the Story County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff after serving there for 16 years. He was a good officer and well respected. He also was involved in the D.A.R.E. program and was a hostage negotiator. Kevin had a charm about him that allowed him to diffuse situations before they got out of hand and was very effective as a negotiator. Before joining the Sheriff's Office, Kevin spent nine years working for Iowa State University Security, which is now known as ISU Police. He totaled 28 years in law enforcement. Kevin was a member of the Roland Legion Post No. 3087, Mid Iowa Star Chapter 210 Touring and Riding, Pheasants Forever, Loyal Order of the Moose 520, State and National Sheriffs Association. He is survived by his wife, Debra McKinley of Roland; three sons, Jeremy (Shanon) McKinley of Huxley, and Sean McKinley and Eric McKinley, both at home; a daughter, Jessica McKinley of Nevada, Iowa; two brothers, Mike (Penni) McKinley and Tim (Barb) McKinley, all of Ames; and three grandchildren, Byron, Dylan and Hunter. Other relatives from Dunlap where Debra was born and graduated from High School are her mother, Velma Rodman; sister, Charlotte and husband Joe McCurdy, their daughter Sarah of Osklaoosa, son Michael and wife Lynette and two sons Brandon and Christian of Cumming, Ga.; sister, Marcia and husband Steve Hooten, their sons Joshua and Joel and wife Leana and daughter Sonya all of West Des Moines; aunts, Luella Phillips of Council Bluffs, Susan Thomas of Dunlap, Ruth Shumate Boe of Dunlap and cousin, Roger Hein of Woodbine.
