Heffernan 1931 - January 25, 2007 The Dunlap Reporter February 02, 2007 James L. Heffernan, 75, of Council Bluffs, died January 25, 2007, at his home, after a long-term illness that affected him the last few months. Mr. Heffernan was born in Dunlap, Iowa in 1931. He has lived in Council Bluffs since 1986. He was a member of Holy Family Church. James served in the Korean War in 1951 as a tank leader. In 1955 James and Jeanette M. Hays were united in marriage. Jeanette was from Gothenburg, Neb. Prior to his move to Council Bluffs, Mr. Heffernan spent twenty-five years in Carroll, Iowa. In 1953 he started with Interstate Electric Supply. In 1975 he went into partnership with the late Neil Lane and decided to locate to a store in Carroll, Iowa now referred to as Echo Group. James retired and sold out in 1986 and remained active on the board for several years. He enjoyed many good Christmas gatherings with customers and friends. While working Mr. Heffernan served on the Chamber of Commerce, was an active member of the Elks and Legion Club, numerous C! ountry Clubs, and several boards. Mr. Heffernan was a salesman at heart and spent hours traveling rural Iowa. Following his retirement he spent several winters in Arizona. He spent hours playing cards and reading the newspaper looking for Cushman Motors. He enjoyed his building located behind Interstate Electric, renaming his new stage "The Oldtimers Den". He enjoyed having a place for fellow employees and friends to gather. He also spent many hours and good times at the river. James enjoyed thoroughbred horses, cards, fishing in Alaska, camping, traveling, people and celebrating with the Irish on St. Patrick's Day. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette of Council Bluffs; sons, Mike of Arizona and Jimmy of Council Bluffs; daughters, Marcia Rupiper and husband Joe of Roselle, Iowa, Kathy Swanson of Council Bluffs, Nancy Johnson and husband Mike of Holstein, Iowa; grandkids, Jill, Lori, Stacie Rupiper, Nathan, Taylor Necs, Lexi Johnson, Jeff Heffernan and Justin Swanson; broth! ers, Bob Heffernan of Council Bluffs, Micky Heffernan of Omaha, Neb.; sister-in-law, Mary Colpitts; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 3, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Council Bluffs. Visitation with family will be 10-11 a.m. prior to service at Holy Family. Luncheon will follow. Memorials may be given to Alegent Health Hospice. Mr. Heffernan was a silent leader and will be missed by all. In the oldtimer days he believed friendship was the prize and everyone hit the jackpot. All Interstate-Echo customers, Former Co and current workers are invited to be Honorary Pallbearers. Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home in Council Bluffs is in charge of arrangements.
