Wallace was born Sept. 7, 1920 in Mason City to Wallace and Eunice (McGinnis) Smith, Sr. He grew up in Florence, Neb. In 1937, Wallace joined the U.S. Army Cavalry. When the United States entered WW II, he joined the 101st Airborne Division, and was among the first wave of paratroopers jumping into France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He fought ad was wounded in France. Wallace rejoined the 101st to fight in Holland, where he became a prisoner of war. He was married to Doris L. Layton in 1948. Wallace worked at Wilson Packing Co., Omaha, for many years as a boiler engineer. Doris died June 25, 1996. Wallace loved fishing, gardening and doing crafts. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris; twin brother, Walter; brothers, Raymond and Ray; step-brothers, Harry and Harold McGinnis; and sister, Lucille Schaber. Survivors include his sons, Jerry Smith, Schaumburg, Ill.; and Mike Smith, Carter Lake; grandson, Michael Carrier, Carter Lake; nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral Services were held Nov. 2 at the Mondamin Church of Christ, Pastor Wayne Bahr, officiant. Organist was Sharon Shelton. Casket bearers were Dave Myers, Curt Hougen, Danny Kougias, Mike Ford, Kenny Layton, and Michael Carrier. Military honors were conducted by the Modale and Mondamin Legion Posts. Interment was in the Calhoun Cemetery near Missouri Valley. Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home, Missouri Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
