Jack was born Sept. 30, 1922 to William and Hannah (Pedersen) Peterson, Omaha. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School with the Class of 1940 and served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Jack married Mary Jane Foote, also of Missouri Valley, Nov. 20, 1944 in California. Jack and his young family returned to Missouri Valley in 1946, where he worked and raised his family.
