Baxa, 71, 12/10/2004 Donald J. Baxa, 71, Missouri Valley, died Nov. 25 at Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital, Missouri Valley. Donald was born May 15, 1933 in Munden, Kan. to Joseph M. and Marie B. (Divin) Baxa. he graduated from Modale High School in 1951. Upon receiving notice that he was going g to be drafted during the Korean War, he elected to enlist in the U.S. Air Force, in March of 1952. After serving four years, including tours in Iceland and French Morocco, he returned to the Modale/Mondamin area to help his father in farming. In February of 1957, Donald married Mary Elaine Vittitoe. Three weeks later he received a telegram from the President of the United States stating that he was recalled to active duty for 48 months. He remained in the service for 22 years, six months and 17 days, retiring Oct. 1, 1974. The couple retired in the Phoenix, Ariz. area, where he held numerous jobs, most notably at Northrup Corp. TECH Rep., Motorola, Inc., as field engineer, Honeywell Bull, Bull, N.H., as manager of the production process, equipment and facilities, and with the City of Peoria, Ariz. He also went to college full-time and received degrees in middle management and general business. Don was a life member of the Roman Catholic Church, teaching catechism for three years in Germany. He was also a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Mary Elaine, Missouri Valley; children, Dena Faaborg and her husband, Jon, Ft. Worth, Tex.; Daniel Joseph Baxa and his wife, Elaine, Tallahassee, Fla.; Ronald Orville Baxa and friend, Emilia, Port Huron, Mich.; and Regina Marie Baxa, Peoria, Ariz.; and grandchildren, Jared Faaborg, Gena Faaborg, Caitlin Baxa, Carley Baxa, Connor Baxa and Jens Baxa. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 1 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Missouri Valley, Rev. Fr. Bob Harris, celebrant. organist was Lyle Waterhouse, vocalist was Elizabeth Dillinger. Honorary bearers were Connor C. Baxa and Jens L. Baxa. Casket bearers were Don Kocour, Duane Wohlers, Dennis Kirlin, Duane Neill, Robert Schwer, and Charles Herman. Interment was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Missouri Valley. Military honors were conducted by Julius F. Muller Post No. 337, American Legion, Missouri Valley.
