Spencer, 75, passed away at his home in Sierra Vista, Ariz., on Saturday, December 11, 2004 surrounded by his family. He was born in Dunlap, Iowa to John and Carrie Spencer. He was the youngest of three boys. Ray was an honor student and an all around athlete. He was captain of the Dunlap High School football and basketball team and the class president. Ray graduated in 1947 from Dunlap High School. He was drafted into the Army in 1950 where he served during the Korean War. Ray married Marjorie Densmore of Dunlap, Iowa in 1951. They moved to Sierra Vista, Ariz. in March of 1958. At that time, Sierra Vista was very small and Fry Boulevard was still a dirt road. He was a good friend to Mr. Fry who started the town. Ray and Marjorie were founding members of the Sierra Vista Conservative Baptist Church. Ray led the effort to build the church that still stands today on North and Taylor. In 1959 he took a job with Civil Service and retired in December 1988. Ray and Marjorie had two children, Jeffrey Spencer who is a Captain at the Fry Fire Department and Teri Spencer who is the President and CEO of Ephibian, a custom software and data integration company in Tucson, Ariz. Through the years you could always see the family sharing time together, fishing, camping, boating, and motorcycling. He and his son were original members of the Nomad Motorcycle Club, the first family motorcycle club in Sierra Vista. Ray was known as a man who was always available to assist others as the town started growing. He helped Tommy Young and numerous other entrepreneurs get their businesses started in the early days of Sierra Vista. Ray was a member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion. Ray is survived by his wife Marjorie Spencer; son, Jeffrey Spencer; granddaughter, Shauna Spencer; grandson, Kenneth Spencer, all from Sierra Vista, Ariz.; daughter, Teri Spencer from Tucson, Ariz., and brother, Robert Spencer of Buena Park, Calif. He was crem! ated at Hatfield's Funeral Home on December 15, 2004. His ashes will be saved and spread with Marjorie's after she passes away. At his request, there will be no memorial services; he wanted his friends and family to celebrate his life, not mourn his death. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
