I have always liked to see the look on someone's face when they ask where I was born and I tell them Hardscratch, Iowa. I thought you may be interested in where the old Hardscratch sign is now located. It ended up in the recording studio of my cousin Max D Barnes, in Hendersonville, Tennesee, just outside of Nashville. Max, who also claimed Hardscratch as his home, was a gifted songwriter and is in the Country Music Hall of Fame. His publishing company is Hardscratch Music, Inc. My great-great-grandmother and other relatives are buried in Bethel Cemetery.
