(Joe) Alexander, 89, died April 10 at Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital, Missouri Valley. Joe attended and graduated from Modale Consolidated School System and married Gertrude Erixon, Nov. 9, 1937, in Red Oak. He owned and operated Alexander's Grocery Store in Modale for many years. He closed the downtown corner store, once the center of the community, in 1995. Joe was a member of the Modale United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed gardening and reading. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gertrude (March 9, 2003); sister, Norma Orndorf, and brother, Clarence Alexander. Survivors include two daughters, Loene Herman and her husband, Jim, Modale and Ginger Alexander, Modale; a sister, Mildred Strain, Modale; a brother, Donald Alexander, Lakewood, Calif.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many friends. A Masonic Service was to be held April 13, followed by a prayer service. Funeral Services will be held today (Wednesday, April 14) at 11 a.m. at the Modale United Methodist Church, Pastor Bo Dagit, officiant. Organist will be Genelle Riesland. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren: Denis Herman, Denette Davis, Douglas Herman, Deanne Adams, Darci Homan, and Dana Herman. Interment will be held at a later date at the Calhoun cemetery near Missouri Valley. Memorials may be offered to the United Methodist Church. Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
